Permabit Technology Corporation is a private supplier of Data Efficiency solutions to the Computer Data Storage industry. The company's Albireo product line delivers data deduplication, data compression, and thin provisioning in four forms, ranging from a ready-to-deploy appliance to an embedded SDK, enabling OEMs to choose the deployment method(s) that best suits their requirements.
Permabit claims its products, which offer multi-Petabyte scalability, are 3x faster and 40x more memory efficient than competitors.[1]
History
Permabit was founded as Permabit Inc. in 2000 by a technical and business team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[2] The company went through a management buyout in 2007 and was renamed Permabit Technology Corporation at that time.
Permabit’s first product, Permabit Enterprise Archive (originally known as Permeon) was a multi-PB scalable, content-addressable, RAIN-based storage product, first launched in 2004.[3] Enterprise Archive utilized in-house developed technologies in the areas of capacity optimization, WORM, storage management and data protection. To date, the company has been awarded 28 patents.[4]
In 2010, Permabit launched the Albireo family of products which focus on licensing Permabit data efficiency and management innovations to original equipment manufacturers, software vendors and online service providers.[5] Publicly acknowledged customers of Albireo include Hitachi Data Systems, LSI Corporation, Stonefly and Overland Storage.[6]
Products
- Albireo SDK – a software development kit designed to add data deduplication to hardware devices or software applications that benefit from sharing duplicate chunks.
- Albireo VDO – a virtual block device that provides data deduplication and thin provisioning services for Linux.
- Albireo COMPRESS – add-on application that provides inline, block level data compression.
- Albireo REPLICA – add-on application that provides offsite, file replication between VDO-enabled storage devices
Technologies
- Albireo Index – software to rapidly map hash values of chunks to their storage locations, delivering high performance writes in deduplication environments.
- Albireo Segmentation – a plug-in interface that performs variable length chunking based on content. Plug-ins are provided by the Albireo SDK to support CFB, PDF, TAR, VHD, and ZIP formats.
- Albireo Hash Functions – Albireo SDK provides internal support for MurmurHash3 and SHA-256 based hashing. Externally generated hashes are also supported.
