Old

The Polish and Spanish articles have a lot of material. Can someone translate or summarize? --MarkSweep 01:40, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

What is "art"?

I think we need to define the parameters of this article. What sorts of things are included as art? For example, should poetry be included as art? Or is that more in the realm of literature? What about songs? --Yu Ninjie 09:05, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Although I voted for this article in COTW, I was scratching my head on where to start since "art" really had a very large coverage. This was the article before being nominated to COTW, which was like a redirection page to different aspects of Chinese art. Now the page is like European art history and Japanese Art. That is not a bad idea, but eventually we will need to think of a structure to link articles on different aspects of Chinese Art. We may start discussion since this article will win COTW soon. -- Felix Wan 03:29, 2004 Nov 16 (UTC)

Traditionally, Chinese art primarily consists of music (Guqin), Go (board game) (called Weiqi in China), Calligraphy, and brush painting. Should this be mentioned somewhere in the text? --Liuyao 08:12, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It seems to me that this article is two broad and needs to be split in two. One about Chinese art (visual arts) and one about literary arts. Though I'm not sure then where film would fit in that kind of scheme.--Amerinese 06:03, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Martial Arts

Do martial arts belong in this article? — J3ff 20:44, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Licensing requirements for photographs

Does anyone have experience getting an appropriate release from a museum to photograph exhibits (with natural light, of course)?

I'm not sure what the Wikipedia requirements are for releases, is there a document I can print out and ask a museum administrator to sign?

The reason I ask is that I live within driving distance of a great many Chinese art displays, and I have some decent photography equipment, but I don't want to waste my time taking a lot of photographs and then finding I can't contribute them.

Any advice will be appreciated. I want to contribute photographs to this article if at all possible.

Suggestions

The first sentence should be eliminated since it has little content: "Chinese art is art, whether modern or ancient, that originated in or is practiced in China or by Chinese artists or performers. "

"Cao Pi is known for writing the first Chinese poem using seven syllables per line (七言詩), the poem 燕歌行": a translation of the title is needed. --Erauch 03:32, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Move

We should move this article to "Art of China" - it is not the policy of Wikipedia to use adjectives derived from country/region names, it is potentially confusing. --[[User:OldakQuill|Oldak Quill]] 10:12, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

What's potentially confusing about it? Stylistically I think "Chinese art" looks better: "Art of China" sounds clumsy. jguk 14:04, 28 Nov 2004 (UTC)

References

This article has been extensively expanded over the last week or so, yet I still see only one reference, surely more sources were used by the editors? Please cite your sources! -- [[User:Solitude|Solitude\talk]] 08:46, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

Most of the information I added was directly copying and pasting from other articles already within Wikipedia — J3ff 00:49, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I second the concern about this. It seems to be a great article but the lack of references undermines it. If you wcould find somethat would be great. I would look but Chinese art is not even close to an expertise of mine! :-) I tagged the article as lacking references to hopefully draw some editors to add some...Alex Jackl (talk) 07:10, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

alter citizens sentence

this didn't make sense to me,

Citizens from Taiwan or Overseas Chinese can also be considered as full represent of Chinese art as long as they revendicate its heritage.

so I guessed at it's meaning and changed it to this..

The art of Taiwan and that of Chinese Emmigrants can also be considered part of Chinese art where it is based in or draws on the heritage of Chinese art.

does that sound reasonable? Mozzerati 21:16, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawal

Observing and searching MET site image, the vessel lost its cover. Therefore it lacks its shape. I withdraw acclaiming for it. Although I have a little doubt, it is impossible to describe it more, unless I really check it. december 6, 2005

Chinese printmaking - was there any before say 1800?

I'm looking for more to add to woodcut and woodblock printing, but i can't see anything here. Was there any significant tradition? Johnbod 01:45, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is a very rich tradition of "door guardian prints," "new year's prints" and other religious prints that goes back centuries-would you be interested? early printed art related books? how about printed money? or any book printing? what exactly are you looking for? hope that I can help now that WP knows that I am not any sock puppet! (I saw your comment to DGG that you were surprised, thanks! White Krane 11:00, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just looking quickly at sites:

http://library.ust.hk/info/exhibit/newyear/ny-eng.html http://www.artelino.com/articles/chinese_new_year_prints.asp http://www.c-c-c.org/ex/doorgod.html

talks about Door Guardian prints evolving into New Year prints as early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). I think we are going to have to change the History section that deals with China under Woodcuts. Under "Woodblock printing" there are also far earlier examples of colour woodcuts than what is stated but they are printed money, does that count?White Krane 11:23, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Contemporary art since 1979

I have already made some slight additions to the section dealing with "Visual arts." But I think it needs a lot more work. Please comment or I will continue to make more changes in a week or two (is that the proper thing to do? I am new to this-just been on here for 4 days and do not want to upset anyone here!).White Krane 10:41, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Sanmaonewspaper1948.jpg

Image:Sanmaonewspaper1948.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The image Image:Chineseart Executionpainting.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

The following images also have this problem:

Banpo matriarchy claim

I removed the unsourced claim that Yangshao culture was matrilineal, see the Banpo article for further information on this. Apparently, this was a political theory driven interpretation that has fallen out of favor, since there is no data to back it up. And more importantly, their being matrilineal or not has no bearing on art history. --Blueshifter (talk) 01:42, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re-organization of Chinese art/arts articles

Chinese art gets a large number of page views - about 750 per day, but is rightly classed as "start" class. The much fuller History of Chinese art (B class) gets about half as many views. A problem both pages share is that they include literature, music and drama and other performance arts. They thus cover The arts rather than art, the latter normally meaning just visual art in English and on en:Wikipedia - see other articles such as German art. I propose the following:

  1. rename Chinese art to Arts in China (currently a redirect to "Chinese art") DONE , or possibly just merge with Culture of China
  2. Redirect "Chinese art" to History of Chinese art - maybe renaming to the former, as with other country's articles DONE & DONE
  3. Take all the non-visual art material from the current "History of ..." and merge to the current "Chinese art"/Arts in China - mostly it is better than what is there now. DONE
  4. Take the "art market" section from the current "Chinese art" article & add to the current "History of..." article DONE
  5. I would then like to improve the main visual art article, over time; the other arts I can't help with.

Comments here please. Johnbod (talk) 16:23, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All but last now done, in view of deafening silence. Johnbod (talk) 22:48, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think the article should definitely be renamed to "Chinese art". It doesn't seem correct to have the main title redirect to a sub-article's title; it should also be consistent with other similar articles on Wikipedia. The article is fine, but the title needs to be changed.--Balthazarduju (talk) 05:41, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now done; I think it's better. Johnbod (talk) 02:50, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of Qing Dynasty Art page?

The Qing dynasty section on this page is very brief, and there is no Qing Dynasty Art page (in contrast to the pretty good Ming Dynasty painting page). I am tempted to start a page on Ming dynasty art (or painting) - but maybe it is somewhere there, I just don't know where to look? Certainly there are reasonable pages on quite a few Qing era artists.

Do we need a Qing Dynasty painting page? Does anyone want to contribute? Mozzy66 (talk) 08:11, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty sure there is nothing. Our coverage is all pretty dire, especially this article. Any improvement will be most welcome. Johnbod (talk) 14:34, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
