There are many meanings for the word cult:
- A religious group often existing on the margins of society; see new religious movement.
- A group which appears religious but has a harmful agenda; see destructive cult
- Some of these cults have been known to participate in cult homicide and/or cult suicide.
- A section of a religion; see cult (religion).
- Some religions in the South Pacific are refered to as cargo cults.
- A cult of personality is sometimes used to refer to a political leader and his following, voluntary or otherwise.

There is also the British rock band The Cult, and the psychedelic band Blue Öyster Cult.
