Tatiana Yevgenyevna Samoilova (Template:Lang-ru; 4 May 1934 – 4 May 2014) was a Soviet and Russian film actress best known for her lead role in The Cranes Are Flying.

Early life

The only daughter of Yevgeny Samoilov (or Samojlov), Samoilova was born in Leningrad on 4 May 1934. Before her first birthday, her father moved the family to Moscow.

Film career

In 1957, Samoilov was given the lead role of Veronika in The Cranes Are Flying. The film was a tremendous success, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. She received a special prize at Cannes, and was nominated for Best Lead Actress at the BAFTA Awards.[1]

Samoilova followed up her role in The Cranes Are Flying with the lead role of The Unsent Letter in 1959 and the title role in Anna Karenina in 1967. In the later movie, she appeared beside her then-husband Vasily Lanovoy.[1]

Legacy and death

In 1993, Samoilova was named a People's Artist of Russia.[1] In 2007, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 29th Moscow International Film Festival.[2]
