Template:Contains Korean text Jung Joon-young (Hangul: 정준영 Hanja: 鄭俊英 born February 21, 1989) is a South Korean rock singer, songwriter, radio DJ, an MC, and well known for finishing in the Top 3 of Mnet’s reality television talent show, Superstar K4.[1] Born in Indonesia, but raised in China, Japan, Europe (England and France) and the Philippines. Jung Joon-young has lived in ten different countries because his father was an international business man.[2] Though he had a lonely childhood, he learned to speak five different languages such as English, Mandarin (Chinese), Korean,[3] and some Japanese and Tagalog (Filipino).[4]

After Superstar K4, he has been doing concerts, TV and radio programs(as a guest or a host) and modeling for cars, clothes, games, N-screen and beer. From May 6, 2013, he worked as a DJ for MBC FM4U "Close Friend" until September 1, 2013. He has appeared on several TV shows including KBS2's "Immortal Song-Singing the Legend 불후의 명곡", "Happy Together 해피투게더", MBC's "Radio Star라디오 스타" and "We Got Married 우리결혼했어요". He is also featured on KBS's "Two Days and One Night Season3 1박2일 시즌3” as an emerging versatile entertainer.

Since his official debut with the release of "1st mini album" on October 10, 2013, Jung Joon-young has kept working on his music as a rocker by releasing his self-created OST “하루만I’m Nobody” for "예쁜남자Pretty Man" and collaborating on the 2014 FiFA world cup cheer song “Always Reds“. He won New Male Solo Artist for “이별 10분전The Sense of an Ending” at the 3rd Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards and has been receiving favorable reactions from the public through his music. His popularity has also reached abroad through holding the successful fan meeting in Taiwan and being interviewed on BBC News [5] on March 19, 2014 etc.

Biography

1989–2005: Early life

Jung Joon-young was born on February 21, 1989 in Jakarta-Indonesia. His father is an international business man who travels to many countries for his business. His family moved to China after living in Indonesia for five years and they lived there for a further five years. While his father was staying in China, his mother and brother moved to Europe. They lived in England and France until Jung turned 17. He couldn't enroll in a regular school due to frequent moves. He took private lessons for regular subjects such as math, English, violin, and piano and he also got his fourth degree black belt in Taekwondo.

2005–2007: Adolescence

When Joon Young became 17, he decided to go to the Philippines to do missionary work. He taught Taekwondo and music to the local children. He was a member of the choir which performed in front of the president of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. While teaching music with his guitar, he realized that his dream was to be a rock singer.

2007–2012: Career Beginnings

Before Superstar K4

His inspiration in becoming a rock singer arose and led him to move to South Korea the next year and soon signed to an entertainment agency (supposed to be Danal Entertainment which released Jung Joon-young's solo EP titled “Rock Trip” in 2010 as well as Digital Single “환상Fantasy“ in 2012).

In 2008, he was selected by Starkim Entertainment to be a main vocalist of an idol rock band, LEDApple.[6] [7] [8][9] As one of the original members, he went through the training process and even finished recording the debut album with the band. But, right before Led Apple’s debut in 2010, Starkim Entertainment discovered that Jung Joon Young was already under contract with the previous agency which refused to release him and, thus, Jung Joon Young was dropped from the idol rock band.[10]

In 2010, determined to make it in the music industry, Jung Joon Young dove into the Hongdae indie music scene and formed various bands such as “Flowermist” which busked in Japan and “Switchon” which performed for amateur club theaters.

As a struggling artist, he modeled for the several different online shopping malls. He was also on an advertisement for "BGFretail"(franchise retail) and participated in other artist's music-videos such as "Twinkle"(트윙클 by TTS -Girls' Generation) and "Liquor Bottle"(술병 by Haha).[11] [12] Jung Joon-young appeared on a TV show "Ulzzang Generation 얼짱시대 Season 5" (Ep.1~Ep.8)[13][14] and referring to this show, he said "People don't like this program because they think this is just about good looking boys and girls chatting on a TV show, but it was a good opportunity for me to make money."

Since his band, “Switchon” was little known to the public, Jung Joon-young decided to take part in Superstar K4 with “Switchon” members to gain more popularity as a band but the band dropped out in the first local audition. Thus, there was no choice for him except to continue the audition as a solo artist not to give up on his dream of being a rock star.

During the Superweek (which was the selection round), his unique low husky voice, good-looking appearance and unpredictable character trait were attractive enough to charm the viewers as well as judges, especially one of the judges, PSY who is famous for "Gangnam Style" (he left superstark4 after 1st final for the world tour). Besides, his collaboration with the competitor Roy Kim of "먼지가 되어 Becoming Dust”(Kim Kyang-Suk), which Jung Joon-young changed the ballad to the rock version, became a big hit and the best duet audition song ever.[15][16] After releasing, it achieved an “all-kill” on real-time charts and won the Mnet 20’s Choice Hot Cover as well as 2013’s Most Popular Karaoke Song of the Year at the 3rd Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards. Even though he was at risk of dropping out several times, he passed through it into the finals by Psy’s choice in the judge’s final decision.

Throughout the final stages, he stuck to rock style only as his musical style. His seriousness and persistence about rock music made the judges suggest that he should try different genre of music such as ballad, repeatedly and criticize him bitterly. However, on the other hand, his firm will and sincerity about his own musical style impressed a lot of viewers, as a result, it caused establishing of mania fans and a strong fandom as well. It explained how he could survive even on the third stage that he made a mistake with his tone out of pitch, through the number of phone votes to support him. His notable covers that represented his rock style were “매일매일 기다려 Waiting Everyday”(TeeSams), "Bed of Roses"(Bon Jovi), and above all, “Outsider” "(Bom-Yurum-Gaul-Kyoul 봄여름가을겨울)[17] which performance was applauded by all of the judges and audience by showing what exactly his own musical style was. On the fifth stage, he was urged to sing a rock ballad "응급실 Emergency Room" (IZI)[18] which had been chosen by viewers regardless of his musical taste, and ironically it highly ranked and topped on various online charts and also earned good reactions from the public.[19]

Though Jung Joon-young was eliminated in the six stage of semi-final as Top 3, despite many viewers’ support (It was revealed that he was the top contestant who had received the greatest number of accumulative phone votes until semi-final), superstar k4 was his big chance to let public recognize his vocal talent and also get a fame. So he mentioned, "Superstar K4 was the turning point in my music career. Before I tried out for Superstar K4, only those who liked rock music listened to my songs. However, now a more variety of people listen to my music and acknowledge me. I'm glad I got to make myself known through Superstar K4." through his farewell interview."[20]

On May 21, 2013, Jung Joon-young finally contracted with CJ E&M after receiving many offers from numerous entertainment companies.[21][22][23]

After signing with CJ E&M, Jung Joon-young released his debut single "Spotless Mind (병이에요)" with two versions of Music Video(N version and S version) on Oct 01, 2013 and immediately made an impact on the country’s charts. Just an hour after release, “Spotless Mind” nabbed the top spot on Mnet, Bugs and Soribada etc.[24]

On October 10, 2013, Jung Joon-Young officially made his debut by releasing his first mini album that consists of six songs containing the title track, "The Sense of an Ending이별 10분 전", and two songs that he participated in writing and composing: "The Number I Know아는 번호" and "Take off Mask". His 1st mini album was a moderate success; The album ranked the top spot both on the daily and weekly chart of Synnara Record during its first week and it sold over 10,000 copies during its first three weeks. In addition, "Spotless Mind병이에요" landed at the third place and "The Sense of an Ending이별 10분전" also took the second place on the chart of MBC's music show "Music Core음악중심".

Jung Joon-young‘s popularity has been gradually expanding abroad. He visited Taiwan in order to promote his 1st mini album on December 8, 2013 and held a successful fan meeting with his song performances as well as an autograph signing event for 500 Taiwanese fans who had bought a special limited edition of his album and he gave them a great impression by communicating in Chinese fluently.

Jung Joon-young earned New Male Solo Artist for “이별 10분전The Sense of an Ending” and Most Popular Karaoke Song of the Year for “먼지가 되어Becoming Dust” at the 3rd Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards and also Best New Male Artist at the Allkpop Awards as an aspiring rock musician. Plus, He earned Star of the Year at the MBC Entertainment Awards as a talented entertainer.

2014

On January 2, 2014 he released an OST for Pretty Man called "하루만I'm Nobody" written and composed by himself that contains two versions such as an American rock style version and a British pop style drama version. The rock ballad "I'm Nobody하루만" has topped Bugs Chart and Mnet Chart within its first five days of release.[25]

On Feb 16, 2014, Jung Joon-young’s 1st fan meeting was held at Yonsei University in Seoul where approximately 1000 fans celebrated his 25th birthday together and his sincere song performances with other activities made his fans so happy and delighted.

On March 12, 2014, Jung Joon-young released an official cheer song “Always Reds”, which was collaborated with the hip hop group Soul Dive, a track on the Red Devils' official cheer album “We are the Reds” for 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Jung Joon-young had numerously expressed his desire to go to Brazil for the World Cup; being a huge soccer mania, he was thrilled at the news of recording the cheer song.[26]

Jung Joon-young was inspired by Freddie Mercury of the British rock band Queen, Kurt Cobain of the American rock band Nirvana, Hyde (vocalist, rhythm guitarist, lyricist and songwriter) and K.A.Z (lead guitarist, backing vocalist and songwriter) of the Japanese rock duo band Vamps, and by the "grunge" genre such as Nirvana.

Jung Joon-young sang "Remember(DJ DOC)" on his first stage of the KBS TV Show "Immortal Song-Singing the Legend(불후의 명곡-전설을 노래하다" and he impressed the audience by performing the stunning and rocking performance on July 13, 2013.[28] He also sang "HaesukNamNyu"해석남녀 (COOL) on the same program and attracted all attention of the audience with an eye-catching performance on Aug 3, 2013.[29] On Nov. 2, 2013, on his third stage of this show, Jung Joon-young sang “Because I Love You널 사랑하니까”(Shin Seung Hoon) with his deep husky voice which was full of emotion and his song touched the listeners as well as Shin Seung Hoon(the composer of the song), so he complimented, “Even though it is beautiful to listen to this song, actually it’s hard to sing, but he did it pretty well by trying to use his voice like one of the musical instruments in the band.”

Jung Joon-young has become a new main MC of Mnet’s "M! Countdown", which airs on every Thursday, from Feb.27 2014 with Ann Jae Hyun (Who is a model as well as an actor). The makers of "M! Countdown" explained their rationale for the casting, stating that Jung Joon Young's experience in hosting a radio show will be a great asset to the program, as will his foreign language skills" [30]

Jung Joon-young appeared on the TV show "Ulzzang Generation Season 5 얼짱시대" [14] [31] (June 2011~ Sep 2011) before participating in the audition. This program is about good looking girls and boys from the real life. Joon Young's friends were "Ulzzang(good looking boys)" so he participated in this program following his friends. In February and July 2012, he was invited to "Ulzzang Generation season 6 얼짱시대" as a special guest.

  • Be Stupid

The Reality Show "Jung Joon-young's Be Stupid" aired four episodes from Sep 10 to Oct 1, 2013 and described the story behind the making of his album. It was reported that Jung Joon-young picked out the title 'BE STUPID' from Diesel 'Be Stupid' Advertising Campaign to express his wish to become almost stupid in order to show his passion for his unique musical style.[32]

Jung Joon-young challenged in babysitting twin preschoolers and their baby brother on KBS's Reality Show "Star Babysitter-Come See Me스타베이비시터 날보러와요" on Sep 18, 2013 and won much praise from viewers by taking good care of the babies in his own fun way as a skillful babysitter.

Jung Joon-young is paired up with Jeong Yu-mi on MBC TV's reality show "We Got Married 우리결혼했어요" and shows his charming, witty and distinct personality as a virtual husband four years younger from Sep 14, 2013.

Since Dec 1, 2013, Jung joon-young has joined KBS’s long-running variety show “2 Days & 1 NightSeason3 해피선데이 1박 2일 시즌3” which airs on every Sunday. His unique and four-dimensional character has been helping out to bring the public’s attention back as well as revive the old day's popularity of this show.

On December 3, "Beatle's Code"[33] " was the first entertainment program Jung featured in after his audition. He showed his sense of humour, his dancing talent and an ability to speak five languages. On December 10, 2012 Jung Joon-Young visited to HongKong to film "TAXI 택시 " and met PSY with Kim Gu-Ra and Jun Hyun-Mu (hosts of "TAXI 택시") before 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards started. At this interview PSY said "I like Jung because his mentality is so special and unique. He looks a lot like me when I debuted." The next TV entertainment programs were "M! Countdown"[34] and "Three Idiots 세얼간이".[35] On March 21, 2013, Jung was a guest on the TV game show"Until We Become Kings켠김에 왕까지" and played an online game with Kim Tae-Hyun (main vocalist of Dickpunks). On Aug 15, 2013he participated in the main broadcast TV entertainment "Happy Together 해피 투게더"[36] and proved his talent as a good entertainer.

From January 28 to March 3, 2013, Joon Young (with Roy Kim) became a temporary DJ on the Radio "Song of Hope at Noon"(정오의 희망곡)[37][38][39] for Kim Shin-Young (김신영) who had a health issue.

From the sixth of May, Jung Joon-young started DJing for MBC FM4U "Close Friend" with Roy Kim, Jung also shared, “I am thankful for the good opportunity and will do my best to create a fun program.”[40][41] From Aug. 19, 2013 to Sept. 01, 2013, Jung hosted "Close Friend" on his own as a solo DJ.

Featuring as the radio's guest and host, Jung showed a wide range of vocal style from Ballad to Heavy Metal by performing the songs of various genres.

Jung Joon-young received attention from the beginning of the audition because of his appearance, unique behaviour and attractive character traits. Many companies hired him as a model when the audition was over. "OB Beer" hired him as a "Cass" model during the audition[43] and "KoreaGM" hired him as a "Chevrolet" car model.[44][45] Jung worked for "Cheil Industries Fashion" as a fashion model for "Bike Repair Shop".[46] [47][48] CJ E&M hired him as an on-line game model for "Everybody's Marble" and a game site "MaGaeChon"(마계촌)".[49] Also he modelled for "CJ Hellovision" which is running "tving" (N-Screen Service).

Right after his hot debut, Jung Joon-young was chosen as the new endorsement model for casual wear brand 'Pearly Gates' in October 2013 and in January 2014 he has been chosen to be a new launched Korean leisurewear brand Siero’s model for 2014 SS.
