On May 23, 2014, a spree killing occurred in Isla Vista, California, starting with a stabbing attack at an apartment, followed by a series of drive-by shootings near the campus of University of California, Santa Barbara. Seven people were killed, including the attacker, and thirteen others were wounded.[7] The attacker was identified as 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, who was a student at Santa Barbara City College.
Details
The killing spree started at the attacker's apartment, where three men inside were stabbed to death with a knife.[8] Shootings then erupted at eight different locations, starting at a sorority house, where two members were killed and a third wounded on the front lawn. The attacker then drove to the Isla Vista Deli Mart, where he fatally shot Christopher Martinez. He then continued firing at pedestrians on the sidewalk, hitting several, including a woman that was injured in the leg at a 7-Eleven convenience store, and also struck a bicyclist with his car.[5][9][10][11] Witnesses described seeing a black BMW 3 Series coupéCite error: The <ref>

Police responded to 9-1-1 calls received at 9:27 p.m., and sheriff's deputies in the area also immediately responded on foot after hearing gunfire. The attacker spotted a deputy and exchanged gunfire at 9:33 p.m.,[11] before fleeing in his vehicle, hitting a second bicyclist with his car in the process.[3][4] He then encountered four more deputies and engaged in a second shootout with them, during which he was wounded.[12] The attacker then fled again, slammed into another bicyclist, and then crashed into a parked vehicle. The attacker was found dead in the vehicle with a bullet wound to his head; it was unclear whether the wound was self-inflicted or if he had been shot by police.[13] By the time the shooting ended, seven people were dead, including the attacker, and thirteen others were wounded.[14][15][6]
Aftermath
Police were initially investigating nine separate crime scenes, but the number was later increased to twelve.[16] A search on the attacker's car recovered three semiautomatic handguns and 400 unspent rounds of ammunition.[17] Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said that there was video and written evidence suggesting the crime was premeditated.[2] On May 24, the three stabbing victims were found and moved out of the attacker's apartment.[5] A typed 140-page manifesto titled "My Twisted World" was also received by KEYT-TV.[18]
Victims
The victims identified are Katherine Cooper, 22, and Veronika Weiss, 19, both students at UC Santa Barbara, who were killed inside the sorority house. Christopher Martinez, 20, was killed at the deli.[19]
Perpetrator
The perpetrator was identified as 22-year-old Elliot Rodger by family members.[1][10] He was born in London, England, but moved to the United States when he was five years old. His father was filmmaker Peter Rodger, whose credits include working as an assistant director for The Hunger Games. His stepmother was actress Soumaya Akaaboune.[1]Cite error: The <ref>

According to the Rodger family's attorney, Rodger saw multiple therapists and was a student at Santa Barbara City College. The lawyer also said that Rodger was diagnosed with "highly functional Asperger syndrome" as a child[20] and was allegedly bullied.[10] He had a YouTube account, which included a video in his account titled Elliot Rodger's Retribution, posted the day of the attack, in which Rodger complained of being rejected by women[2] and described details of an attack similar to the shooting spree; police said they were investigating the video.[21][22] Rodger also had a Facebook account and a blog titled Elliot Rodger's Official Blog, both of which contained posts expressing loneliness and rejection.[3] On an online forum, Eliot Rodgers made several racist posts regarding black, Indian and Asiatic peoples, stating that seeing people of these ethnic groups with white people "makes you want to quit life".[23][24] A week prior to the shooting, his parents reported him to police after being concerned about his behavior and seeing his YouTube videos.[10] During the past year, police had investigate Rodger three separate times, including one incident where he claimed he was beaten, but investigators presumed he was the aggressor.[25]
In Rodger's YouTube video Elliot Rodger's Retribution, where he laid out his motivations and plans,[6] he said,
"Tomorrow is the day of retribution, the day in which I will have my revenge. ...You girls have never been attracted to me. I don't know why you girls aren't attracted to me, but I will punish you all for it."[6]
In his 140-page manifesto titled "My Twisted World", he outlined some of his plans:
"On the day before the Day of Retribution, I will start the First Phase of my vengeance: Silently killing as many people as I can around Isla Vista by luring them into my apartment through some form of trickery."[26]
Reactions
California Governor Jerry Brown offered condolences to the families of victims and stated that he was "saddened to learn of this senseless tragedy". University of California President Janet Napolitano also said in a statement while at Laney College, "This is almost the kind of event that's impossible to prevent and almost impossible to predict." UCSB officials stated that they were "shocked and saddened" that several of their students were among the victims.[27]
