State Champs are an American pop punk band from Albany, New York.

State Champs formed in 2010 and recorded their first demo in 2011; the group's label debut EP, Overslept, appeared in 2012.[1] Their 2013 full-length, The Finer Things,[2][3][4] debuted at #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.[5]

History

The band was formed in the spring of 2010 in Albany, New York by founding members Derek Discanio and guitarist Tyler Szalkowski. Shortly after forming, they released a five song demo EP. The band self-released their debut eight song EP, Apparently, I’m Nothing, on January 1, 2011.[6] On April 19, 2012, it was announced the band had signed to Pure Noise Records.[7] The band recorded their Pure Noise debut with producer Jay Maas (Defeater, Transit (band), Title Fight).[8] Overslept was released digitally and as a 7"" record on September 11, 2012.[9] The band finished recording their debut full-length with producer Sam Pura at The Panda Studios and co-producer and former New Found Glory guitarist Steve Klein (musician) in Fremont, CA in May 2013.[10]

Their debut full-length album, The Finer Things, was released on October 8, 2013.[11] It debuted at #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart,[12] selling a little over 3,100 copies in the first week of release. To support the album, the band supported Motion City Soundtrack and Bayside (band) on a fall tour in North America.[13] The band will spend a majority of 2014 touring in support of The Finer Things. The band started their busy 2014 schedule in March with their first full-United States tour, opening for We Are The In Crowd, William Beckett (singer), Set It Off (band) and Candy Hearts.[14] Shortly after completing this tour, the band will be heading on tour overseas for the first time to support pop-punk band The Wonder Years (band) and A Loss for Words. The tour will be routed throughout the UK and mainland Europe.[15]

It was recently announced that the band will be performing on the Kevin Says stage on the entirety of the 2014 installment of the Vans Warped Tour.[16]
