The Copa América Centenario (Template:Lang-en), sometimes referred to as the Pan-American Cup or Copa Panamericana, is an announced association football tournament to be held in 2016. The competition is a celebration of CONMEBOL's centenary and is to be the first Copa América hosted outside of South America.
Planning
In February 2012, Alfredo Hawit, then Acting President of CONCACAF announced that the competition would be expected to take place in 2016, as a celebration of CONMEBOL's centenary.[1]
Luis Chiriboga, the President of the Ecuadorian Football Federation stated that the United States and Mexico were potential hosts of at least one stage of the competition.[2] CONMEBOL President Nicolás Leoz said "Hopefully we can organize a big event, because we have 100 years and we want to celebrate big,".[3] Hawit preferred the competition to be hosted in United States for financial reasons, stating that "the market is in the United States, the stadiums are in the United States, the people are in the United States. The study that we have made [shows] that everything’s in the United States."[4]
CONCACAF officially commented on the competition in July 2012. CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb stated that there was much organizing to be done.[5]
The tournament was announced by CONMEBOL on 24 October 2012.[6] On 26 October, CONCACAF stated that the CONMEBOL announcement was premature and that talks are still ongoing.[7]
On May 1, 2014, it was officially announced that the tournament would be held in the United States from June 3-26, 2016.[8][9][10]
Stadiums
The following stadiums are being considered for the tournament. Listed are the stadiums, their capacity, and the location.[11][12]

- Rose Bowl (91,000) — Pasadena, California
- Stanford Stadium (50,000) — Palo Alto, California

Participants
All ten members of CONMEBOL are expected to participate along with teams from the CONCACAF region.[1] Leoz suggested that 10 CONMEBOL teams will participate along with six teams from the CONCACAF region.[13]
At the official announcement of the tournament, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF confirmed that all 10 CONMEBOL members will be joined by 6 CONCACAF teams in the tournament. United States and Mexico will automatically qualify. The other four spots will be given to the champions of the Caribbean Football Union and the Central American Football Union, which will qualify through the 2014 Caribbean Cup and the 2014 Copa Centroamericana respectively, and the two play-off winners among the four highest finishers in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup not already qualified.[8]
