The Oconomowoc Lake Club is a lakeside country club. Its requires you to be a member or to be with a member in order to eat there or use their facilities. Their facilities include, a indoor and dockside sit down dining, tennis courts, banquet room, two bars and a pier with sail boats and pontoons that are open to member use. You can also take lessons there such as, tennis lessons, sailing lessons, swimming lessons, and golf lessons at a near bye course. They also hold events there such as, weddings, parties, big business meetings, and even a annual fishery.
History
The Oconomowoc Lake Club was founded in 1890. It was originally involved with a improvement association that had a goal to maintain the lake levels and water traffic coming through the river connected to the lake. The were the ones who ended up installing the Danforth Lock. A lock is a short confined section of a canal. This solved all the water level problems. Also the A.U.S. mail boat was able to travel through this lock and twice a week they would deliver peoples mail to their piers. But that lock was eventually cemented shut and now a damn is used to control the water levels. The history of the Lake Club is directly connected the Villa Gifford or also known as the Gifford Hotel. This hotel was originally a home located just west of the current Lake Club. Mr.George P. Gifford was the center of attention in the late 1800s in the Oconomowoc area. He had guests over often and they loved his food and all the recreational activities they did on Oconomowc Lake. Eventually in the late 1860s Gifford opened his home to selected guests or members. After some construction to his home he had created a simple lakeside hotel. The hotel predated the founding of the OLC. All the meeting for the next 19 years were held at the Gifford Hotel. Then finally the current OLC building was built in 1909. It served members until 1994 when a fire broke out and it was burnt to the ground. After two years of negotiating the OLC was rebuilt in 1996. Present day it is still in business. [1][2]
Summer Programs
The OLC is not just fancy dining, there are many summer activities to do and lessons to take. These activities include sailing, golfing, tennis, and swimming lessons for all ages. OLC offers both adult and youth sailing lessons. An Adult sailing fleet called MC Scow was formed in 1896 and is still in progress today. MC Scow is all about having fun on the water, and racing sail boats. There are also three different youth sailing schools offered at OLC, the beginning school, experienced school, and the racing school. OLC also hosts sailing regatta's some of the more recent ones include Zenda University and BOPN annual competition. OLC has youth golf lessons witch teach kids about the game, from rules to putting and driving. They also have 4 tennis courts, including one clay court. They hold lessons group or individual lessons for any age. The instructors are all former semi-pro or former professional tennis players. They hold club tournaments and other competitions. The "Happy Hackers" club is a group a mid-aged women who play tennis together against other teams from around the state. Another summer program they hold at the club is swimming lessons for all ages. You must be a member of the club to sign up for activities or take lessons. [3] [4]
Weddings and Special Events
Another thing that the OLC is known for, is holding some beautiful lakeside weddings. They are held the Great Ball Room inside the OLC, It has big arced ceiling and looks over Oconomowoc Lake. It holds up to 225 guests. Once you book your date, a personal wedding coordinator will help you plan it. But this room is not only for weddings. It is open to plan rehearsal dinners, special events, business meetings, or anything that you could think of. The OLC will cater your event. [5]
Different Dining
The OLC does not consist of only one dining area. They actually have 4 different sites in the OLC for someone to have a drink or dinner. Sam's Bistro is made for small appetizers, small dinner and drink. The Commodore is more of a sit-down dinner type of room. There is also the option of sitting outside at Dockside which is a set of tables on the pier for any member to sit down and order dinner. Then there is the Topside Bar, which is a bar and lounge with a lake view. [6] [7]
