The Realdoll is a life-size sex doll manufactured by Abyss Creations in the USA, and sold worldwide. The mannequins have durable posable PVC skeletons with steel joints and silicone flesh, which is arguably the state-of-the-art today for lifelike U.S.-made sexual mannequins. Realdoll is designed to closely mimic the texture and weight of the human body, as owners of such dolls generally use them as sexual aids and copulate with them, often dressing them up in special outfits first. Some owners, however, use the dolls as merely stand-ins for human models in photography or other art.
Current incarnations of the female Realdolls were first made and sold in the mid-1990s, and are available in a large variety of customisable body configurations in five skin tones. Several different faces are available, and due to the 2004 innovation of an interchangeable "Face-X" system; any face will fit on any body and they can be changed by the owner. Prices generally begin at around $6500, with some models costing over $10,000. As a cheaper option, some users may choose to only buy a torso of the model. A male Realdoll, "Charlie", is also available, and "shemale" dolls may be purchased from the company as well, although those must be custom ordered.
Abyss Creations made early prototypes from solid latex dolls with interior skeleton, but the company later switched to silicone. Recent innovations in silicone formulae, skeletal elements and storage now allow for a doll that is less prone to tears and compression marks than older dolls, though they are by no means indestructible.
Shock jock Howard Stern has given a personal endorsement of the product after an on-air test. The doll was featured on HBO's Real Sex show where a couple was filmed having a ménage à trois with one of the mannequins. The dolls also appeared in a Swedish documentary, Surplus (atmo films, 2003), which followed Matt McMullen through the company's factory (around 11 minutes into the film).[citation needed] Author Eric Shapiro wrote a fictional book called Days of Allison that involves a product similar to the dolls.[citation needed]
Competitor products
The only other competition Realdoll faces in its price range is from dolls produced in Japan. The Japanese doll makers arguably make similar or better luxury life-size dolls; however, these dolls are usually made for the Japanese market only.
SuperBabe, by N/C Dimensioning, is the closest competitor in the U.S. to the Realdoll being manufactured. In comparison to Realdoll, SuperBabe is not quite as flexible when it comes to customization of the doll, but on a cost basis it is slightly less expensive.
There are few other competitors as well. CybOrgasMatrix, created from a lifecasting of the body of Pandora Peaks and made of an elastomeric gel, has a significant advantages over silicone in softness, elasticity, tear strength, and shape memory.
S16 is another manufacturer of dolls based in the US, and like the Realdoll they offer a torso option and exchangeable heads. S16's doll uses a Fleshlight as the receptible for the user's penis while copulating with them.
A newer manufacturer, Mechadoll, produces a doll named Sophie and is considered by some to be at least as good as Realdoll in reproducing the female anatomical shape and feel.
Now there are appearing sex doll that can controled using the Internet and can interact with other mannequins (i.e. male mannequin) using the net (to give pleasure to user located to both sides of the network).
