Production
Development
Ekta Kapoor signed Mohit Suri to direct a romantic thriller. Ek Villain was earlier reported to be a remake of the Korean film I Saw the Devil, though Suri refuted the claim.[4][5] Suri also confirmed that every character in the film would have grey shades.[6]
Casting
Sidharth Malhotra was reported to be doing a lot of action sequences for the film and this will be his first film where he is playing a character with grey shades. Actor Riteish Deshmukh will be cast in a negative role in this film.[7] Deshmukh described his character as a “radical depature” from the comic roles he is renowned for.[8] Mohit Suri, who also directed the Shraddha Kapoor starrer Aashiqui 2, had to hunt a lot to find a lead actress for his upcoming project before signing Shraddha. Both Mohit and Ekta Kapoor were confirmed that Shraddha suited the lead actress the best.[9] There were earlier reports of Alia Bhatt and Esha Gupta being approached for the role.[10] According to a Mid Day source, Shraddha Kapoor read the script and liked it, and she didn't hesitate in getting signed for the film as Mohit Suri directed her first hit (referring to Aashiqui 2). After the success of Aashiqui 2, it became easy for the director to select the lead actress.[11] Actor Shaad Randhawa of Aashiqui 2 fame was roped in to play a cop with grey shades who fights against the dark characters played by Malhotra and Deshmukh.[12] Television actress Aamna Sharif is also playing a significant role in the film.[13]
Censorship
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared the film with a total of eight cuts, toning down the action sequences and muting a particular word. Tanuj Garg, representative of Balaji Motion Pictures confirmed the same and stated, "The film has been cleared with a U/A certificate after some minor action cuts. Together the cuts amount to just a minute of screen time."[14]
Marketing and Promotions
The movie offical teaser which was released on April 4, 2014 with the Varun Dhawan starrer Main Tera Hero,[15] got 1 million views on YouTube within three days of release.[16] The official trailer of 2 minutes 18 secs was launched later and was well received by critics,[17][18] as well as garnered praise from around the industry including Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Ekta Kapoor among others.[19]
Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Mohit Suri and the film’s music directors attended a musical event in Mumbai to promote the soundtrack of the film.[20] Further, Malhotra and Kapoor promoted the movie at the IPL semi finals[21] as well as on reality shows like Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.[22] Promotion campaigns were also organized across the country in cities like Jaipur,Kolkata[23] and Delhi.[24] As a part of the promtional startegy , a television show based on Bollywood villains was hosted by Malhotra.[25]
