Jonathan Dickson (born July 26, 1974) is an American actor. He is best known for his role as Professor Blackjack (Edward O. Thorp) on the History Channel's Breaking Vegas series. He has also appeared in such shows as 30 ROCK and Boardwalk Empire. He can be seen shag dancing next to Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in the romantic drama, The Notebook.
Personal life
Dickson was born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, the son of John and Sandra Dickson, and the brother of Jennifer Dickson Meeks and Jason Dickson.
Career
He attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, and graduated with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Opting for the entertainment world instead of medical school, he took a job with a CBS / UPN / CW affiliate WSPA-TV 7/WASV 62 (now WYCW) in Spartanburg, SC as their on-air television personality. Jonathan was seen by the entire upstate of SC, parts of NC, and also GA. While working for the TV station, Jonathan appeared in over 500 commercials, promos, hosted telethons and parades, and meet and greets. He won several awards for his work on TV. Jonathan had plenty of experience but no formal training so he decided to enroll at the intense acting conservatory, The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, in New York City.
As fate would have it, in his second year at the conservatory, Jonathan was grabbed outside of class one day by a casting director and asked to read for a TV show. 2 weeks later, Jonathan was asked to be the lead role in the History Channel’s Breaking Vegas series. He played Dr. Edward O. Thorp aka Professor Blackjack. In 2008, he was cast as the cowboy in a Burger King commercial for the Nickelodeon show, SpongeBob SquarePants Pest of the West. Later that year, he was asked to fill several roles for the kids show, Wisdom Tree. 2009 saw Jonathan in a commercial advertising the new Dean Koontz novel, Relentless. He was cast on the hit NBC comedy, 30 ROCK, a few months later. In 2011, he was cast to be the delivery man for feared mafia leader, Nucky Thompson, on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire [1]. In 2012, he was cast in an Optimum FiOS commercial and played himself on the Bravo reality show, Love Broker [2]. Currently, he is performing standup comedy in NYC and just appeared as a news reporter in the film, Redemption of the Commons.
