Monheim am Rhein is a North-Rhine-Westphalian (Germany) medium-sized municipality in the district of Mettmann between Leverkusen and Düsseldorf.

History

Monheim has approximately an 85-year history. It was first documented in 1150. Since 1960, Monheim possesses the status of a city. At the end of 1974 was eingemeindet Monheim in the context of the "local reorganisation" after Duesseldorf. After a successful complaint before the national constitutional court yard in Münster, the city became again independent on 1 July 1976. Since 1994 the official city name is Monheim am Rhein.

Sites of Interest

  • Schelmenturm - The 26-m-high Monheimer landmark from the early-15th century was part of the former attachment plants of the Grafen von Berg. Since 1972, the tower was reorganized and is used as cultural meeting place.
  • Deusserhaus- the manor-house built around 1848, today is the museum of the homeland federation Monheim e.V.
  • Haus Bürgel - built in 1019 as Castrum in Burgela mentioned are a remainder of the late-Roman castellet Burungum from the 4th century. Some wall remainders from the Roman timea are preserved. Interestingly enough Haus Büergel it used to stood on the other side of the Rhine before the new riverbed was created on the present side.

Transportation

Monheim am Rhein's transportation consists of some transit line; the stop Langenfeld(Rhld) rapid transit railway, the S6 EssenDüsseldorfLeverkusenCologne is in the proximity and is with a transit route attainable. The city belongs to the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr, on bus route 233 for Leverkusen applies partially to the tariff Verkehrsverbundes Rhein-Sieg.
