KSNT "27NEWS" is the NBC network affiliate serving the Topeka, Kansas metropolitan area. The station broadcasts on UHF channel 27 at 1,100 kilowatts and in high definition on channel 28 also on the UHF dial, licensed to operate at 16 kilowatts but it broadcasts at only 4 kilowatts under a Special Temporary Authority. KSNT is owned and operated by Montecito Broadcasting Group. Its transmitter is located in Topeka.
History
KSNT debuted on December 28, 1967 as KTSB, originally owned by Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., founding owner of the Buffalo Bills NFL football team. It was an NBC affiliate, but also carried ABC as a secondary, sharing ABC programming with WIBW-TV. However, Topeka viewers could view the full schedules for both networks on the Kansas City stations, which all decently cover Topeka.
Then, in 1982, George Hatch, owner of the Kansas State Network based at KARD-TV in Wichita, bought the station. Later that year, the station was renamed KSNT as part of an effort to help viewers think of the KSN stations as part of one large network. During the next few years, the station referred to itself as KSN, but only did limited simulcasting with KSNW in Wichita and the other three KSN stations in western Kansas, even after ABC disappeared from the schedule in 1983 when KLDH (now KTKA) signed on.
In 1995, Lee Enterprises picked up the KSN group, including KSNT. In 2000, Emmis Communications acquired the KSN stations, but eventually sold it to its current owner, Montecito Broadcasting Group (formerly SJL Communications) for $259 millon. It was announced in April 2006 that KSNT-DT (28.2 RF) will be Northeast Kansas' home of the CW Network.
