Nimrat Kaur (born 13 March 1982) is an Indian film and stage actress. Starting her career as a print model, Nimrat moved to doing theater with directors Sunil Shanbag and Manav Kaul in Mumbai. She has been part of plays like Baghdad Wedding (2012), All About Women and Red Sparrow.
After appearing in small roles, her Cannes' first was with Anurag Kashyap's production Peddlers in 2012, followed by The Lunchbox with Irrfan Khan, which was screened at 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
Early life and background
Kaur was born in Pilani, Rajasthan.[1][2] Her father worked with the Indian Army, so she also lived and studied in Bathinda and Patiala, including at Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. In 1994, her father was killed in a terrorist attack in Kashmir. Thereafter, her mother started living in Delhi-suburb, Noida, where she grew up and did her schooling from Delhi Public School, Noida. After that she studied at Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, and started taking part in local theatre.[1][3]
She has a younger sister named Rubina.[4]

Nimrat attended the Cannes festival for the second time for the epistolary romantic film The Lunchbox (2013).[10][11][12] The film emerged as a commercial success and was critically acclaimed.[13][14][15] Kaur received rave reviews for her portrayal of a lonely wife who begins a friendship with a man (played by Irrfan Khan) through letters.[16] Raja Sen of Rediff.com said of Kaur's performance: "It is a disarmingly natural performance that is impossible to forget and difficult to analyse, and in this limited space one may merely express admiration."[17] Jay Weissberg of Variety called her a "radiant presence" and Pratim D. Gupta of The Telegraph said that "Nimrat strips off all the sentimentality to attach dignity and grace to the character. This one’s a sparkling debut."[18][19]
Kaur has signed on to appear in a recurring role for the fourth season of the American TV series Homeland,[20] and also in Saurabh Shukla's untitled psychological drama with Rajkummar Rao.[21][22]
