PBS Digital Studios is a YouTube channel through which PBS distributes original educational web video content. It is a network comprising both original series and partnerships with existing YouTube channels. Most of the series are about science, pop culture, art, food, news, and music, though the channel originally launched with a series of video remixes based on PBS icons such as Mr. Rogers. Its first scripted series, Frankenstein, MD, launched on August 19, 2014, and will run until October 31, 2014.
History
Though it took some time to work out how exactly to develop successful content, they had their first viral hit with a "remix" of autotuned vocals from Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood titled "Garden of Your Mind."[1][2] One goal of PBS Digital Studios is to include diversity in their choice of actors for the cast. This would provide opportunities to aspiring Hispanic, Asian, and African-American actors. It is notable that they are teaming up with already successful web content providers, such as Pemberley Digital, and potentially progressing the quality of web content as they adapt to the medium.[3] The YouTube channel for PBS Digital Studios has received more than 90 million views and has over one million subscribers. Popular series found on their channel include Blank on Blank, It’s Okay To Be Smart, Everything But the News, and the multiple Webby Award-winning PBS Idea Channel.[4] Each month, the shows average more than 5 million streams.[5]
