Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe (born February 6, 1993),[1] is an American singer-songwriter, record producer[2][citation needed], dancer, actress and former model. Her name means "God Is With Us" in her father's native language, Shona, from Zimbabwe.[3] Raised in Los Angeles, California, she began her entertainment career at the age of 3 when she began modeling and acting.

In 2012 Tinashe released two critically acclaimed mixtapes In Case We Die (2012) and Reverie (2012) which she created in her home studio. After the release of the mixtapes, Tinashe signed with RCA Records. She released her third mixtape Black Water (2013) and is currently working on her debut solo album Aquarius, due for release in October 7, 2014.[4] Tinashe released her debut single "2 On", in January 2014. The song lived as the #1 song on rhythm radio for over 4 weeks and has currently peaked at number 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming her first Top 40 hit single.[5]

Apart from music, Tinashe is known for her acting. Tinashe made her acting debut in the television film Cora Unashamed (2000). Tinashe has also appeared for the film The Polar Express alongside actor Tom Hanks, and from 2008 to 2009 Tinashe had a recurring role in American sitcom Two and a Half Men as Jake's girlfriend Celeste.

Early life

Tinashe was born in Lexington, Kentucky, but only lived there for a few months. Her father Michael is from Zimbabwe and her mother Aimie has Swedish/Norwegian/Danish ancestry.[6][7][unreliable source?] When Tinashe was a young child, her parents and her two younger brothers, Thulani and Kudzai moved to Los Angeles, California where she later attended Crescenta Valley High School for a year before finishing early in order to pursue her music dreams full-time.[8][failed verification] She began studying ballet, tap, and jazz dancing at the age of 4, and continued to compete in various styles as a part of a dance company until she was 18.

Musical career

2007–2011: Career beginnings with The Stunners

Tinashe spent four years from age 14-18 as a member of the girl group The Stunners, founded by Vitamin C.[6][8][9][10] Six months later, the group signed with Columbia Records and released a single titled "Bubblegum" to iTunes along with the official video. The single and video were later removed from iTunes. In December 2008 Sanders left the group to pursue her acting career[11] and was substituted by Lauren Hudson. In 2009, the group left Columbia Records[12] and signed a production deal with Lionsgate Entertainment, who also produced a scripted television show pilot based on the group, which was ordered by MTV.[12][13] In October of that year, the girls released a 5-song EP influenced by Madonna, Gwen Stefani and Rihanna[11] and shot a music video for their promo single "We Got It" which was released on February 22, 2010.[12]

The group performed the song on The Today Show[14] as well as The Wendy Williams Show.[12][15] After meeting with various labels interested in the group, they signed to Universal Republic Records[12] in 2010 and released their first single "Dancin' Around the Truth" which featured the New Boyz to iTunes as well as Top 40 radio stations.[16] The music video premiered June 2, just before the group was announced as an opening act on Justin Bieber's My World Tour.[17] They finished their run after twenty dates on the tour and returned to LA to record new songs with producers and writers such as Toby Gad, The Cataracs, Dave Broome,[18] Livvi Franc,[19] Sheppard Soloman, Jimmy Harry and Tony Kanal of No Doubt fame.[20] They shot a fourth music video in the desert of California in November for their new song "Spin The Bottle" which premiered on December 31, 2010. A full album along with an official second single titled "Heart Stops Beating", written by Tinashe and Allie and produced by Orange Factory Music was planned,[21] but cancelled when the group split in 2011.[12][22][23]

2011–2013: Mixtapes and Record Deal with Sony/RCA

After the Stunners officially disbanded, Tinashe began pursuing a solo career.[24][unreliable source?] On May 3, 2011, Tinashe gave her first televised solo performance in front of 57,000 people during the Dodgers VS. Cubs baseball game singing the National Anthem, "God Bless America".[25][26] She released her first solo music video, a cover of Lil Wayne's single "How to Love".[27][unreliable source?][28][failed verification] The song was later released as a free digital download via Tinashe's official website.[29][30] Following the video's release Tinashe confirmed she had officially been released from her recording contract with Universal Republic.[31][unreliable source?] Announced on August 5, 2011, Tinashe was featured on the dance single "Artificial People" by the music production company OFM, the single was released on September 12, 2011.[32] On November 25, 2011 Tinashe released the music video for "Can't Say No", her first original solo song.[33] The track samples Britney Spears's song "Blur" from her sixth studio album Circus.[34][unreliable source?] The song was released for download on November 28, 2011.[35][36][unreliable source?]

February 2012 saw the release of In Case We Die, Tinashes debut solo mixtape which she recorded herself in her home-studio.[37] The mixtape released four singles, the first being promotional song "Chainless" which was released to iTunes the December 19, 2011.[38] The first official single from the mixtape "My High" was released for streaming on her official website.[39] The second official single released from In Case We Die was announced as "This Feeling". The music video was released on May 1, 2012 to GlobalGrind.com.[40][41] The mixtapes final single Boss was released August 20, 2012 just after the song was featured in an episode of the VH1 series Single Ladies.[42] The music video debuted on August 14, 2012 and was self-directed and co-written by Tinashe and Jt Ervin.[42][43][44] The mixtape was received positively by the blogosphere.[45]

On July 13, 2012 Tinashe announced she had signed with RCA Records.[42][46] Following Tinashe signing to RCA she released her second mixtape Reverie on September 6, 2012 through her official website.[47] The Mixtape released three singles, the first "Stargazing" was released on August 21, 2012, the second "Ecstasy" was released on December 18, 2012 and the final single from the mixtape "Who Am I Working For?", the video for the song was released on March 12, 2013.[48] Upon its release, reviews for Reverie were generally positive.[49] Tumblr blogger Yakk compared Tinashe's use of "more underground sounds and gaining interest in the music industry" to Frank Ocean and The Weeknd.[50]

From August to November 2012, a series of remixes of songs from Tinashe's two mixtapes leaked online to critical acclaim.[51][52][53][failed verification] [54][55]

On November 26, 2013 Tinashe released her third Mixtape "Black Water" that consisted of thirteen tracks produced by Dev Hynes, Boi-1da, Ryan Hemsworth and Tinashe herself. The project also includes a feature from rapper Travis Scott on the single "Vulnerable" released off the mixtape.[56]

2014 - Present: Aquarius

Tinashe is currently working on her debut studio album.[57] It is set to be released in October 2014 and Tinashe has been recorded in Los Angeles, London, Atlanta, New York, and Toronto.[58] Tinashe has been working with several producers including Clams Casino, Ryan Hemsworth,[59] Stuart Matthewman, Mike Will Made It, DJ Mustard, T-Minus, Boi-1da, Fisticuffs, Best Kept Secret, Ritz Reynolds and many more.[60]

On January 13, 2014, Tinashe released "2 On", a song featuring American rapper Schoolboy Q and produced by DJ Mustard, as the first single from her debut album.[61][62] The song entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 89 and has since peaked at number 24.[63] On June 29, 2014, Tinashe made her national television debut, performing her hit single "2 On" at the BET Awards pre-show and also announced that her anticipated debut album Aquarius, would be officially released on October 7, 2014.[64][65] She spoke about the theme of the album and said "It combines the essence of all my previous work. I’ve stayed true to who I am. Obviously, there’s some progression as I’ve grown as an artist, and I’m influenced by new things and what not. I think my fans will be really happy with it. I think it really embodies who I am and where I am creatively right now.”[66] The second single "Pretend" featuring Harlem rapper ASAP Rocky was released on August 22 and an accompanying music video will be released soon.[67][68]

Personal life

At a young age, Tinashe was in and out of school due to pursuing acting gigs and roles and ultimately was bullied a lot because of it. She explained to "Bullet Media" saying "I actually did get bullied a lot in school. I went to public school until 9th grade and had a pretty bad experience. I missed out on prom and graduation and the whole college experience but I don’t feel bad about it because everything else I was doing was what I actually wanted."[69]

On The Fader & Sono's At Home With series, Tinashe showed her bedroom that includes a studio set and mentioned that she still lives with her parents.[2]

She has a black belt in Taekwondo.[70]

Artistry

Musical style and voice

"I write a lot of it in my car, that's just a very inspiring place to listen to music. I think it puts me in the zone. I just think of melodies usually and then lyrics come after. Sometimes really easily, and then sometimes I'll have a melody for a week before I come up with any lyrics so it just kind of depends."

Tinashe writes and produces most of her music in her home room studio and describes her musical style as a mixture of "urban, rhythmic and pop", with influences from indie, alternative, and hip hop. She said "I'm just really inspired by R&B, hip-hop, and alternative music so I just wanted to combine all three of those for the sound. And the type of person I am, I just find darkness interesting in a way. I just love songs that sound like a little crazy, I think it creates an interesting juxtaposition between my voice because it is so bright, and soft, and like pretty, and sweet that I don't want my music to come across sweet or nice. I do like the opposite, so I think of something that's dark and heavy and then I put like sweet and light on top."[71]

Once The Stunners disbanded, Tinashe took it upon herself to start creating her home studio: "When I was 18, I took it upon myself to create a home studio. I bought a bunch of equipment, a camera and microphones. That was when I started teaching myself how to record and mix my own stuff. I wrote and recorded it all there in my room. I used ProTools I started filming my own music videos and editing those as well, and then putting them online. I used Pro Tools. I edit my videos in Final Cut Pro. I produce beats with Logic." She cites YouTube as her teacher.[72]

She has been compared by industry critics and fans to the late singer Aaliyah, Mýa and The Weeknd based on her mixtapes.[73]

Influences

Tinashe was inspired by the music her parents would play in the house when she was young and cites Christina Aguilera as her main inspiration and artists like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and Sade as influences.[60] "I think that they’re all iconic in some type of way. They’re all amazing singers, vocalists, performers, and that live aspect is something I admire. I always want to put on a great live show."[74][75] She looks up to Janet Jackson for her stage presences, dance style and mentioned that her favorite album of hers was The Velvet Rope.[76]
