KIII is a television station in Corpus Christi, Texas. Owned by the Gannett Company, the station serves as the ABC affiliate.
History
The struggle to establish a channel three allocation in Corpus Christi was started after channel 22 KVDO-TV (headed by Nestor Cuesta and Gabe Lozano and a handful of other local businessmen)went on air in 1955. They had limited success, and increasing trouble as VHF stations on channel 6 and channel 10 emerged from FCC hearings and got on air.
KVDO petitioned the FCC to add channel 3. Other cities also wanted it and it took a lot of struggle to get it at CCT. KVDO-TV sold their license assets to the McKinnon group in exchange for an interest in the new KIII-TV, the old KVDO-TV location was sold to KRIS-TV channel 6.
Kiii was first put on the air in 1964 by McKinnon Broadcasting. Channel 3 has established a programming philosophy which sets KIII-TV apart as a market leader. The Hispanic community's allegiance to KIII began with The Domingo Pena Show in 1964 and grows stronger each year. Local news, local special events and a never ending dedication to local public service has earned KIII the reputation as one of the most admired ABC affiliates in America.
In 1969, KIII started a satellite, KXIX-TV channel 19, to bring ABC programming to Victoria, Texas. In 1976, it was sold to local ownership. It now operates as Fox affiliate KVCT. KIII is one of three default ABC affiliates in Laredo market with KSAT-TV and KRGV-TV.
On April 29, 2010 it was announced that KIII-TV would be acquired by London Broadcasting Company.[1] which the sale was closed on August 31.[2] On September 18, 2011, KIII began broadcasting newscasts in high definition.
On May 14, 2014, Gannett Company announced that it would acquire KIII-TV and five other LBC stations for $215 million. Gannett's CEO Gracia Martore touted that the acquisition would give the company a presence in several fast-growing markets, and opportunities for local advertisers to leverage its digital marketing platform.[3] The company also owns fellow Texas ABC affiliates WFAA and KVUE, which it had acquired in its purchase of Belo Corporation. The sale was completed on July 8.[4]
