Following completion of Bryggebroen, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge connecting Amager and Vesterbro, there were access problems for the approximately 12.500 bicyclists crossing the bridge daily. To continue their journey across the Dybbølsbro viaduct leading over the train tracks and into the central city, bicycle users were either forced to make a 750 metres (2,460 ft) detour around the Fisketorvet shopping centre, or carry their bikes up the ramps of a stair well, to overcome the 5 metres (16 ft) elevation difference.
