TechnologyOne (ASX:TNE) is Australia’s largest publicly listed software company,[3] with offices across six countries. It creates solutions that transform business and make life simple for its customers, by providing powerful, deeply integrated enterprise software that is incredibly easy to use. Over 1,000 leading corporations, government departments and statutory authorities are powered by TechnologyOne’s software.

TechnologyOne participates in seven key markets: government, local government, education, health and community services, utilities, financial services and managed services.[4] For these markets it develops, markets, sells, implements, supports and runs its preconfigured solutions, which reduce time, cost and risk for customers.

For 26 years, TechnologyOne has been providing customers with enterprise software that evolves and adapts to new and emerging technologies, allowing them to focus on their business and not technology. TechnologyOne software is available today on the TechnologyOne Cloud and across smart mobile devices.

History

TechnologyOne was founded in 1987 by Australian entrepreneur Adrian Di Marco and financially backed by founding shareholder and a former customer, John and Dugald Mactaggart of J.L. Mactaggart Industries[5].

The company first started out as a financial software company, using state of the art technology to gain a competitive advantage. At the time, relational database technology was a new, unproven and emerging technology, which TechnologyOne harnessed to create a new generation of accounting software for corporate and government organisations[6].

TechnologyOne officially launched its first product, Finance One, in Brisbane in 1991[6]. In 1994, Finance One became one of the first Australian products to achieve international accreditation by the Australian Software Standard AS3563 and International Standard ISO9001.

Initially, TechnologyOne partnered with resellers to sell its product, but found this did not provide a satisfactory customer experience. It chose to expand its services to market and support each of its products. TechnologyOne no longer uses implementation partners or resellers, taking complete responsibility for building, marketing, selling, implementing, supporting and running its software for each customer[7]. This approach has proven very successful for the company, which boasts a 99 percent customer retention rate.

TechnologyOne broke into the wider Australian market in 1996, opening its first interstate office in Sydney, and offices in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart by 2000. With offices in all its operational regions, TechnologyOne was able to maintain a direct relationship with its customers and take full accountability for their experience.

In 1999, at the request of Perth-based Curtin University of Technology, TechnologyOne built and added a student management product to its suite, Student One[8]. In the same year the company also floated on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), completing one of the most successful floats in Australian history. TechnologyOne was one of the first IT companies to become publicly listed and heralded the start of the dot com boom in Australia.

Throughout the early 2000s, the company began to expand throughout Asia Pacific, opening its first international offices in New Zealand and Kuala Lumpur. In 2006, TechnologyOne opened its first office in the United Kingdom, and grew its South Pacific presence, opening an office in Papua New Guinea.

Embracing new, emerging and leading edge technology as a foundation of its product suite has always been a key differentiator in TechnologyOne’s approach to R&D. The company has rewritten its enterprise software four times since it was first built, delivering an enterprise solution that adapts and evolves to new ideas, new technologies and new concepts. Unlike many of its competitors, TechnologyOne includes new technology and associated functionality as part of its software maintenance program, at no additional cost to its customers.

In 2005, TechnologyOne launched a new generation of enterprise software called Connected Intelligence (Ci)[9]. Ci underpins TechnologyOne’s software, and provides the core functionality, security and a consistent user interface for each of its products. Despite the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008 and 2009, the company continued to grow, and the Ci enterprise suite continued to evolve.

As TechnologyOne’s knowledge of customers in its seven key markets deepened, the company began developing preconfigured enterprise solutions[10] in 2010. These solutions provided each sector with proven practice, streamlined implementations that reduce time, cost and risk[11].

In 2012, the company unveiled the TechnologyOne Cloud[12], which delivers TechnologyOne’s enterprise software as a service to customers from the cloud. TechnologyOne builds and runs its own software and continues to invest millions of dollars each year to enhance it[4], creating a virtuous circle that constantly reinforces and improves the total solution.

As part of its cloud strategy, TechnologyOne moved all its own operations to the cloud and has experienced the significant advantages of moving to a much simpler, more cost efficient and elastic cloud model[13].

2014 has seen the launch of the next evolution of TechnologyOne’s Ci enterprise suite, Ci Anywhere[14], which provides its customers with a simple and easy way forward to embrace new technologies and consumer concepts, including smart mobile devices. Ci Anywhere operates on all smart mobile devices as well as laptops and PCs, removing the need to install software on client devices. It is designed to continually evolve and adapt to new and emerging technologies.

2014 also saw TechnologyOne’s market capitalisation pass the AUD$1 billion milestone, and the company enter the S&P/ASX 200 Index[15].

Products

TechnologyOne’s value proposition, the power of one, is that it develops, markets, sells, implements, supports and runs its own world class, fully integrated enterprise software solution which includes:

TechnologyOne Cloud

In 2012, TechnologyOne announced its first cloud products as its vision for the future of software delivery.[30] TechnologyOne now runs its own enterprise software for customers through the TechnologyOne Cloud, taking complete responsibility to provide a simple, cost effective and elastic model of computing.[31] It passes on the benefits of economies of scale to provide a continually evolving cloud solution. Customers simply sign in to get enterprise software as a service.[32]

Connected Intelligence (Ci) Platform

TechnologyOne’s software is underpinned by its Connected Intelligence (Ci) platform, which provides the core functionality, security and a consistent user interface for each of its products.

In 2014, the company released the next evolution of Ci, Ci Anywhere, which provides customers with a simple and easy way forward to embrace smart mobile devices and new concepts that can streamline business and reduce costs.[33]

Ci Anywhere represents a significant investment of more than $200M and 200 developers. It enables the adoption of more flexible work options, easy connection between customers and communities and readily takes advantage of the benefits cloud computing can bring. Ci Anywhere runs across all smart mobile devices as well as traditional laptops and PCs, and is designed to continually evolve and adapt to new and emerging technologies.[34]
