Margarine - an observation

Around eleven hours ago, a friend, looking at Wikipedia on a smartphone, pointed out to me that the article margarine was totally empty. I checked on my own smartphone, a different make; and found it was indeed empty. Only the "Mobile" view was affected, the "Desktop" view was normal. Other articles appeared normally in both views. But now, with no intervening edits to the margarine article, it appears normally in my "Mobile" view. Can anyone explain this? Maproom (talk) 08:05, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Problem with way biography is ordering itself by first not surname in categories

Hi, hope someone can help as I'm a bit baffled as to why Prudence Glynn is filing itself under P and not G in the various categories I've placed her in. The reason that the Soyuz (spacecraft) article is showing the status as "in service" is that the Soyuz spacecraft is indeed in service. Soyuz TMA-13M is currently docked to the ISS. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:57, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

@PrimeHunter: But it is still slow as is the user edit count (contributions > edit count). Also the revision history statistics seems to be missing data from at least October 25 (see e.g. All England Plate) and perhaps subsequent days as well. @PrimeHunter:, Thx, but as you can see they claim it is not their issue because other tools such as 'edits by user' (article > view history > edits by user) show the same problem. The main point is that there does not seem to be a an easily accessible central location where a user can find more info on (perceived) technical issues such as these (or report them). Even the main help page does not have a section dedicated to technical issues. I find that surprising. I spent considerable time trying to find any info on the issue of these tools being down / unresponsive as well as the missing data and still have no idea what the problem was and whether the missing data will be (re-)added. --Wolbo (talk) 12:47, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Technical issues in general are often reported at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). It isn't always the right place for a given issue but you often get some info or a link to a better place like Bugzilla. See Wikipedia:Bug reports and feature requests. That indeed seems like the appropriate place to go with questions on technical issues. Unfortunately it is completely non-intuitive for an editor looking for 'technical' and 'help' to go there. The term 'Village pump' provides no intuitive connection whatsoever, it sounds more like a social gathering place. To at least somewhat alleviate this I added a link to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) on the main Help page. If you are aware of errors in the page, we encourage you to report them on the article's talk page. You should give references to reliable published sources where possible (we do not regard Facebook as a reliable source). Then an unbiassed editor is likely to act on your suggestions, and change the article. We strongly discourage people from editing articles about themselves, or from paying agents to do so, as this ofetn leads to biassed articles: see Wikipedia's policy on conflict of interest. Questions about searching.

1. How do I turn off accepting pluralization? I want to be able to search for pages with "John Hopkins" in them and do *not* want the search to care either way whether "Johns Hopkins" is on the page or not. (So "John Hopkins" -"Johns Hopkins" isn't the answer)
2. Is there any way to search the text of the pages rather than the way they are rendered (so I can search for "Publisher=John Hopkins" inside the text for a use of a Template)
3. Is there any way to search for text *only* inside references?

Leon Johnson

Hi,

I was on the "People from Burke County, North Carolina" Wikipedia page and I was trying to add the American Football player Leon Johnson, Leon Johnson (American football)

But I couldn't figure out how to add him from the "edit" tab. He is from Morganton (as his Wikipedia entry notes). So can someone please put in a link to his page and add his name to the list? I would, but I couldn't figure it out.

Peer reviews and when to act on them

Just a quick question, I presently have a peer review open in which someone has suggested splitting an article into two separate pieces. It seems like a sensible idea, but as it's quite a dramatic change to make, should I wait for the discussion to close before I start splitting text off into other articles? I am no expert in this, and I am not quite sure if a split is really needed, but I can see the logic in doing it, and would not oppose a split of this article. You started the article and are the main author, and the other involved people have been informed or already approve. I think it is fine if you make the changes, no need to wait for the review. Unfortunately our caching system means that unregistered users sometimes don't see the most recent version. If a vandalized version was reverted in seconds as here then there is a risk that some users still see it long after. You can purge the page if it happens. Print/export:Create a book features ...

I was wondering if you could select certain sections of the "books" you want to create or generate. Say, you want to change the margin and discard the "Contents" box as well as the "see also" and the tailing References" ... sections and, if possible, could you do that for all pages or "books" you have selected?

Is there a step-by-step guide to using this feature?

I could have my way around it if I am able to save the document as ODF but then I click on "Show book (2 pages)", the only option I see is "PDF"

Which professional athletes? You haven't indicated which of our four million articles you are talking about. If you think that an article can be improved by adding some information, you are welcome to edit the article and add it (if you have a reliable published source for the information), or to suggest on the particular article's talk page that this information be added. We don't have an article on Witches Bru, but there is a draft of one at User:Roger_Gary. However, unless you can find some third-party reliable sources to back up the information there and establish that the band is notable, it cannot become a Wikipedia article. Quarterly journal date format

I have a copy of the Second Quarter 1973 issue of Automobile Quarterly that I have used as a reference in articles on Triumph, Messerschmitt, and ALCO automobiles in general, and on the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 and first generation of the Pontiac Grand Am in particular, as the magazine has articles on these cars.

However, the date given for the magazine is "Second Quarter 1973", and this triggers an error response in the "date" entry in Template:Cite journal. Is there a solution to this, other than just giving a year and a volume and issue number instead of the date as stated in the magazine?

Is there a tool to send RFC to eds who contributed to discussions that are now archived?

Last year, a certain AFD closed with soft peddled advice to address certain policy issues. Today, a poll is current on the article talk page. I'd like to let everyone who took time to opine in the last AFD know about the poll, but there are too many to deal with manually and I don't want to just do a subset to avoid accusations of improper canvassing. Is there a "broadcast" tool that allows one to auto-contact a page's contributors? Here is the particular AFD in question and here is the list of contributors.
If you don't know, where else do you suggest I ask?

Citing patents by inventor with duplicate name

I'm working on drafting an article on electronics engineer Bob Adams. (Full disclosure: I work for a communications firm that supports Adams' employer Analog Devices, and will be requesting that a neutral third party review, edit and publish the draft if it's deemed suitable.) According to an Analog Devices press release, Adams has been granted 32 patents, and I'd like to cite this information from a neutral source in the draft if possible. However, a search in the USPTO database includes some irrelevant results related to other inventors of the same name. Is there a way I can distinguish in my citation which results are related to this specific Robert W. Adams in order to state the number of patents in the draft? Mobile Search Field Won't Accept Input

Nodalotaluk

After seeing the article Nodalotaluk for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I immediately thought a minor character only ever seen once in one panel of one story, with an article with no actual content edits in seven years, wasn't notable enough to have her own article, so I made a merge request to List of Donald Duck universe characters, which ran through unopposed, so I added a section about her to the list article and deleted the link to her own article from the navbox template. But another editor thinks she's even less notable, and has put her article up for deletion. Am I allowed to change the article into a redirect to the list article while it's still undergoing deletion discussion? If the decision is to delete the article, am I allowed to resurrect it as a redirect? I have absolutely no intention of resurrecting it as a full article, because I think she's not notable enough. It's probably not a good idea to redirect while the deletion discussion is ongoing. If the contributors to that discussion agree with your merge, you (or someone else) can change Nodalotaluk to a redirect after the discussion is closed. If the verdict is "delete", I guess your addition to List of Donald Duck universe characters will have to be reverted, since you copied from the Nodalotaluk article material that someone else wrote, and that material will be unattributed to its author if the edit history of Nodalotaluk is gone. The situation is something of a mess; you really shouldn't have merged the content after the AfD was initiated. Deor (talk) 23:55, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

OK, I understand. If the outcome of the AFD debate is "merge", I will change the article to a redirect. If it's "delete", I might have to remove the addition of Nodalotaluk I made to the list article. If, by any remote chance, it is "keep", then I don't know what to do. Should I initiate another merge discussion or just go ahead and change the article to a redirect? However, I don't think Nodalotaluk is anywhere near notable enough for the outcome to be "keep". I often use your site, and I am cautiously happy with it.

I recently researched the cost of illegal immigration and could not helpn notice the obvious bias in the commentary.

You describe the Heritage Inst as "conservative" but NEVER described any other similar organization as "liberal" or "progressive" in outlook.

How about living up to your claim of non-partisanship????

I don't know which of our millions of articles you refer to but you can post specific suggestions on its talk page. See Help:Using talk pages. The official website of The Heritage Foundation is http://www.heritage.org. It says "conservative" seven times on the front page alone, including "Our mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies" and "Conservative policy research since 1973", so "conservative" seems a very uncontroversial description. Hi, you are correct that we don't allow spam links to external websites. So please don't add any weblinks to Wikipedia pages. However, you are in luck. Wikipedia has a page about your museum at Aviation Heritage Museum (Western Australia). If it is relevant, you can link to that internal page from other pages. Btw, it would also help to promote your museum if you make some more pictures of the museums airplanes and upload them under a free licence to Wikipedia. We welcome pictures like that. Other people will certainly make good use of those pictures on article pages in over a hundred languages, and anyone who sees the pictures and looks up more info on the pictures will find your museum. What is the best way to deal with an editor who often in his comments in Talk page discussion personally insults co-editors? Redirects with no incoming links

Dear editors: While looking for something else in Wikipedia:Articles for creation I came across this redirect: Wikipedia:Articles for Creation/Rick Lax. At some time in the past this was likely a draft that was placed in the wrong namespace and then moved out to mainspace. There are no incoming links for which to preserve it, and no one would search for Rick Lax there. I think 188 is writing about the article Pyrex here on en:Wikipedia, which says "France-based cookware maker Arc International acquired Newell's European business in early 2006,[6] and currently owns rights to the brand in Europe, the Middle East and Africa." I am trying to write a page for an author I like Daniel Boyd, I tried to create a page, but years ago I think he tried to create a page for himself 6 years ago (which you're not suppose to do, so it got deleted).

He has a lot of articles online now that credit him as a notable filmmaker and author.

What do I need to do now to create a page that won't be deleted?

"Brigadier General Haig Shekerjian is one of the highest ranking Armenian Americans ever to serve in the U.S. military, and the first cadet of Armenian parentage to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., at the turn of the last century. One hundred years later, West Point continues to attract American cadets of Armenian descent. An important figure both in U.S. military history and post-genocide relief efforts, Shekerjian’s example inspired scores of young Armenians to enlist in the U.S. army at the height of World War II. Photo from ‘United States Army in World War II: The Technical Services: The Chemical Warfare Service: Organizing for War’ by Leo P. Bropby and George J. B. Fisher, Center of Military History, United States Army, Washington, D.C.: 1989.

Shekerjian was born on June 13, 1886, in Adabazar, Izmit, Turkey. He moved to the U.S. at the age of five with his parents Hagop and Esther (Alexanian). In 1911, on his birthday, he became the first cadet of Armenian descent to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned as second lieutenant of infantry.

From April 1916 to February 1917, Shekerjian, nicknamed “Shek,” served with the Punitive Expedition in Mexico under General John J. Pershing. During World War I, he served as assistant military attaché in Greece, and then with the Allied Armies of the Orient in the Middle East. In 1923, he was transferred to the Chemical Warfare Service and stayed with the branch for 39 years, retiring in 1946.

Shekerjian became the first Armenian American brigadier-general by order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. (The other is Brigadier General Michael J. Tashjian, West Point class of 1948, who was deputy chief of staff, procurement, Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. He retired in 1976, and now resides in San Diego.) Shekerjian was appointed commanding general of the Chemical Warfare Replacement Training Center from 1942-43, after which he assumed the position of commanding general of Camp Sibert, in Alabama, from 1943-45. He then became deputy head of the Army and Navy Liquidation Commission, U.S. Middle East Theater of Operations (1945-46).

“My father told me about [Shekerjian] back in 1947, when I was applying for West Point,” recalls retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Sarkis Semerjian, West Point Class of 1953. “He mentioned [it] after he learned [about him] during a trip he took to the Boston area. He said, ‘You know, there is an Armenian general, retired now, that went to West Point.’”

Semerjian says it is important to remember Shekerjian. “He set a tone, a precedent, for more Armenians to apply [to West Point]. I found that most people in the military are totally unfamiliar with Armenia and Armenians. This is one way of bringing [it] to their attention. Most Armenians in the military did this. Peter Mirakian did this. George Juskalian did this [Retired army colonels, both deceased]. And I did this.”

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point boasts two U.S. presidents—Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower—numerous distinguished generals, heads of foreign states, policy makers, and entrepreneurs. For Semerjian, it is important for Armenian Americans to be part of that institution, both to serve the country they now call home, and to repay an old debt—an idea that is a distant echo of Shekerjian’s words. Eleven cadets of Armenian descent were enrolled in the 2010-11 school year, and the school has two faculty members of Armenian ancestry, according to Semerjian.

In 1943, Private A. Baligian of the U.S. Army, a correspondent for the Hairenik Weekly (later renamed the Armenian Weekly), visited Camp Sibert and conducted a brief interview with Shekerjian, which appeared in the June 16, 1943 issue of the Weekly. Shekerjian spoke about his 1919 travels to Constantinople, Erzerum, Erzinga, Kars, Etchmiadzin, and Yerevan. “Having lost his parents early, he keenly regrets that he never learned the mother Armenian tongue, except a few scattered words,” wrote Baligian.

Shekerjian appeals to compatriots

That did not deter the general from remaining involved with the Armenian community. He delivered speeches at rallies and used various organs to reach out to Armenian Americans to garner support for the war effort during World War II, often referring to the heroism and sacrifice displayed during the war by Armenian Americans like Captain Albert Arabian and Lt. Ernest Dervishian. (Dervishian was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War II. Upon returning to his hometown of Richmond, Va., Dervishian was presented with a $1,000 war bond, which he selflessly returned to the city, requesting it be used to help other veterans.)

The response above doesn't quite make it clear, but for a person to be mentioned in a section like Armenian American#Notable Armenian Americans or List of Armenian Americans#Miltary, it is normally a requirement that an article about the person already exists in Wikipedia (see the boldface sentence at the end of the lead in the latter article). Hello, Purrington. Wikipedia is very sparing in the external links which it allows, other than links used as references (to reliable sources for specific statements in the text). (My understanding as to why this is is that there might be dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of websites around the net, which are "pertinent to the subject matter": putting large numbers of them in would make the article unusable, but why should this one go in rather than that other one?) I have looked at the link you want to add, and in my view it is not suitable for use in Wikipedia as an external link. The site does not give an authoritative and objective account of Jung and his work. Indeed, the first sentence on the main page is "There were very good reasons why the Catholic Church has carefully purified Christ and his mother from all contamination by the peccatum originate", so it is clear that the creator of the site has an agenda. Template bug?

I've got a bug affecting this page, List of Phi Sigma Kappa brothers, which I cannot figure out. Is it a problem in the template, called {{FratMemberStart}}? The second column of each section contains additional formatting instructions, which appear to be from the template code itself. For example, where a field should simply say:

Instead it says:

Linking to a Polish language page

I am trying to link two pages together. I want to link the English language History of the Poles in the United States with its Polish language equivalent, https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historia_Polak%C3%B3w_w_Stanach_Zjednoczonych. If you have a reliable source for the correct information, you are welcome to edit the article and correct it (citing the source). Infobox coordinates broken

I've just noticed that the display of coordinates in infoboxes is broken. It appears to affect at least several infoboxes (including Infobox mountain pass and Infobox station) and quite possible all of that use coordinates. I'm afraid the complex syntax, and large number of sub-templates, is beyond me; I cannot even identify which template has been changed. As it could be causing quite widespread issues, I thought I'd better report it here in case somebody else can help. Yes, I just noticed that User:Deor has also reported this at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Coordinates problem again. Seems that it is system-wide. Hopefully it will get fixed before I get to read about it in tomorrows dead-tree media. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 12:19, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

The article about GamerGate is a blatant attack on GamerGate supporters

Wikipedia is meant to be a source of OBJECTIVE information. It is not a platform for SJWs OR GamerGate supporters to throw sticks at one another. It is most definatly the SJWs doing most of the throwing. GamerGate supporters are sickeningly under represented in the media. If you asked a GamerGate supporter what they wanted, they'd say real guidelines and standards within the gaming journalism realm. They don't want to push women out of gaming. They don't want to oppress women. They want a reliable, uncorrupted source of gaming reviews. That's it. The media is focused on GamerGate supporters supposedly harassing women and sending out death threats, but the same atrocities committed by the anti GamerGate side aren't shown. Christopher Poole (Moot), the admin of 4chan was sent death threats to his home address as he allowed freedom of speech on 4chan and let people talk about GamerGate, and yet this wasn't brought to light. And it must be questioned, why are these self-proclaimed feminists fighting GamerGate when there is real and serious oppression of women all over the world, such as young female circumcision and arranged marriages in Northern Africa?

By letting this article remain in the sorry, subjective and frankly offensive state it is in, Wikipedia is supporting the trampling of the right to freedom of speech and the harassment and bullying that the anti GamerGate side has been vomiting all over GamerGate supporters. But harassment and bullying is ok if you're white and disagree with the SJW movement, right?

By posting here, you are ranting at thousands and thousands of people, most of whom have never looked at the article Gamergate controversy. There is no "editorial board" which decides about articles, they are all determined by consensus. I see that the article already has a tag that says that its neutrality is disputed: you are welcome to contribute to improving it on its talk page Talk:Gamergate controversy. But note that you will be more likely to have an effect if you discuss specific claims that you think should be added, removed or changed, and provide references to independent reliable sources that support your position. --ColinFine (talk) 12:57, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I didn't realise the talk page was semiprotected (and I can't see anything that tells me that it is). My reference section isn't working!

I'm using the reference tags to refer to references at the end of appropriate paragraphs, but these references aren't then showing up under the Reference section.

For example I have written the following sentence: "Buckingham Tennis Club was founded in 1912".

Rather than duplicate the <ref> tags in the References section, you should add the template {{reflist}}, which will automatically populate the section from your references. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 12:31, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
