New trick
Hi again Aurum sorry to bother you, but you might be interested in this: Instead of writing cart W.carter, you can add one more | and put the nickname inside the brackets, and then the nickname becomes the blue thing instead. Like this: cart. Cool huh? :) I did the same with your name at the beginning of this post. Happy wanderings, w.carter-Talk 13:40, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
hey cart, cool trick! I should of checked the red box thingy. anyway, live and learn, aurum Aurumdog (talk) 16:39, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
How to insert a pic in an edit
Here is a help that another user has written that explains some more: User:Yunshui/Images for beginners When we want to try out things and just muck about with the code to see how things work we each have a page called a "sandbox".... Hope all this made any sense. :) Best, w.carter-Talk 18:16, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
hey cart, still working on it - hope you don't mind the streamlining, it was a preemptive strike - i'll say more when I know more - live and learn, aurum Aurumdog (talk) 21:54, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Aurum, you can do whatever you want on your page. :) Most of us don't delete stuff from the page, you have probably seen all the messy stuff on my talk page, instead we let an automatic program archive the older stuff. If you want to I can set up such a thing on your page as well. You can decide how old stuff have to be before it is archived. All the resulting archives are totally accessible all the time so that you can go back and check out things if you want to later. Best, w.carter-Talk 23:35, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- hey cart, no mate - I like streamlining stuff - it can be real fun as long as no one gets offended. Plus I like the idea of taking the fun away from an auto. arch. prog. - Oh, yeah, the reason I ask about editing pics is because I have come across one of yours, before, and now I am not sure where I found it. Also, while I am at it what does "Sankt Olofs kyrka i Gamla hamn" translate to? and do you have any other pics of it (Sankt Olofs kyrka i Gamla hamn). - c soon, aurum (talk) 05:19, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Aurum! If you want to get hold of a pic that you know the name of, most of the times you can just put that name in the searchbox at the Commons and it pops up. Like this. The pic is this:
"Sankt Olofs kyrka i Gamla hamn" translates to "Saint Olof's church in Old Harbor", the church is now demolished. It is not my pic. I have looked. Btw, if you want something translated Google have a page where you can translate anything to most languages. It is here. I'm at work now, but I'll be back later tonight. Best, w.carter-Talk 10:23, 31 October 2014 (UTC)
- hey cart, bumber about Saint Olof's church, would of loved a nice pic of it in autumn. About inserting pics into edits - I got the https:// thingy, but don't know how to turn that into a pic in my sandbox. help apprec. as always, aurumAurumdog (talk) 01:33, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Aurum! Ok, let's start with having a look at what pic it is and where you found it.w.carter-Talk 10:06, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Aurum. First things first. When I post on your own talk page it does not make any difference if I write just "Aurum" or all the Code Aurum, you should get an automatic red square in any case, there is nothing I can do to "fix" this. But automatics sometimes malfunction and don't work, as I have noticed many times. If you have a conversation with someone it is always wise to check that page now and again just in case. As I have said before: it is an imperfect site.
- So, the pics. First of all you have to get hold of the proper name for the file. With the dogs that was easy since that was the last part of the https: "Tesem_couple.png". I entered that in the searchbox at the Commons and came to this page. Then I click on the picture and come to this page. On that page is the "real" name of the file that you need to turn it into a pic: File:Tesem couple.png . If you take that name and put it into double brackets it becomes a pic, BUT you also have to add |thumb| otherwise the pic will be in the original size which is often way too big for the page. Like this:
- If you want some text you add it like this:
- The pic of the sun was a bit tricky since the place that you found it had converted part of the File-name to machine-code. But I found it for you. It is here, and I'm taking the File-name and make a "pic-name" for it the same way as with the dogs, but I am making it show up on the left side of the page just to show you how it's done. Best, w.carter-Talk 17:22, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- hey cart, sorry mate - it is not just "an imperfect site," but an imperfect world; that is
its very perfection - which means that imperfection is included under perfection - and if we could understand this there would be more peace in the world - also, it says something about humanity. - ok, let's c if I can make the pics work - thxs mate, aurum Aurumdog (talk) 23:14, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Aurumdog, you are of course right about the imperfect world. :) I see that you are getting your pics. That is very nice. Good job! See ya, w.carter-Talk 23:20, 1 November 2014 (UTC)
Some more rules...
Hi Aurum! Just me bothering you again. I saw that you have managed to upload a pic yourself. Just one thing: Since you did not draw all of the pic yourself, you have to give credit to the page where you found it, otherwise it may be deleted from the Commons as a copyright violation. I have added the creds at the pic of the two dogs, look here. Be sure to do so with other pics in the furure also.
try resizing by this: or or whatever. This can be combined with the "thumb"-thing. See below. :) All the best, W.carter 17:50, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
- hey cart, no bother & u don't have to be sorry unless you did something wrong - you might of missed one pic - so keep your nose to the grind stone - flip it hard - aurum Aurumdog (talk) 18:13, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hello again Aurumdog. So, I've fixed the text on the other pic as well. Would you be so kind as to repeat the question here. And also, unfortunately, since English is not my native language I sometimes don't quite understand your dialect and what you write and I may have misunderstood you. I apologize for that. Where are you from? If you don't mind me asking that. :) Best, w.carter-Talk 19:24, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
- hey cart, the question is right there in the middle of the page - better get your eyes checked - txt streamlined - sorry if streamlining is confusing ! - I'll try to be more clear, aurum - ps : i'm a kiwi but I live in Oz now ! Don't worry about your English it is better than my any other language + better than a lot of English speaking people I know Aurumdog (talk) 04:05, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Aurumdog, "better get your eyes checked"? That is not a very nice thing to say to someone who is offering you help. You can only upload free pics or some that you have made or taken yourself. And please, use the cart combined with the four squiggles otherwise I do not get your notification since this is not my page. I am checking your page now and then, but not all the time since I have other things to do as well. Best, w.carter-Talk 09:18, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- hey cart, I think the substance of what we are both saying is coming across fine. "I better get my eyes checked too." sitting in front of this screen 4 too long - question 4 u: who decides how to take what another writes? who decides what to write? - mistakes are bound to happen - but as we discussed somewhere else: imperfection is part of perfection. therefore the world is perfect because it contains imperfection - it is a utopian dream to think that perfection is all pristine and good without anything even hinting that mistakes are a big part of life. No mistakes = no life ---> that is perfection, therefore perfection is already here and now all we have to do is open our eyes.... sorry, about rambling - as always thxs 4 all your help -aurum

- Hello Aurumdog I'm now handing over to Graeme Bartlett to be your guide. You are quite fortunate to have such a guide. :) I only asked if someone from Australia could help me and I had no idea the one to answer would be one of their very best editors. This editor has been here far longer that I have and can answer your questions lot better than I can, especially you last ones here (above). Such questions are a bit beyond me. And please try to use regular letters and words when you write, much easier to understand. :) All the best luck in the future, w.carter-Talk 12:43, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Aurumdog, I will take on some answers to your questions. When you write on Wikipedia the information has to come from somewhere, and we call these places sources. As you write you decide what sources to use. However we want them to be reliable, which hopefully means they are true, and you can work out where they got the information from. When several people work together on an article there may be a disagreement. Some pages are very controversial and there will be lots of biases and special selection of material that supports the point of view. The arguments then continue! For a new topic on a page we expect that there will be at least two sources that are independent and have quite a bit written on the topic. FOr example an article about Joe Bloggs should have reference something that is not written by Joe Bloggs himself. Also we can ignore Facebook fan pages, as there is not much chance of reliability. Usually newspapers, books magazines are counted as reliable. Web pages for these sorts of things are also good.
- "who decides what to write?" You decide yourself. Are you interested in some topic? If you have no idea take a look at Wikipedia:Requested articles and that links you to many pages containing lists of what people want. Not all is good to write about, but you could find something there. Let me know what topic you would like to pick, and we can talk about how good it is. You may not even want to write on a new topic, but be a gnome and fix lots of small things like spelling mistakes.
- Here on Wikipedia we start anyway, imperfection or not, and then others will come along and improve it. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 20:20, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi from another Australian
Hello Aurumdog,
w.carter has asked me to help you out, since I am more likely to understand your writings here! I'm from Australia too. You can ask me questions too, as I have been on Wikipedia for about 10 years. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 23:02, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
