The Sri Lanka Medical Association (Abbreviation:SLAM) is the national organisation of medical and surgical professionals of Sri Lanka. It is conciderd as the oldest national professional organization of medical professionals in Asia and Australasia.

History

The SLMA was started as the “Ceylon Branch of the British Medical Association” on 17 December 1887.[1] The first President was Dr P D Anthoniz. However, the moving force behind its inception was Dr W R Kynsey (who was later to become Sir William Kynsey), who, along with 5 other doctors met on the 26th of February 1887, at the Colonial Medical Library on Maradana Road, Colombo and thus the Association was born. The change of the name to “Ceylon Medical Association” came in 1951. In 1972 when Sri Lanka became a Republic, the name changed to the “Sri Lanka Medical Association” as we know it today.

Location

The SLMA head office is located at “Wijerama House”, Wikerama Mw, Colombo. The building is named after Dr E M Wijerama, who gifted the residence he lived in to the thessociation in 1964.

At 121 years, it is the oldest surviving English medical journal in Asia and Australasia,[3] and the leading scientific journal in Sri Lanka. The CMJ is indexed in BIOSIS, CAB International, EMBASE and the Index Medicus. CMJ’s editorial policies and quality are of international standard and it is listed by the International Committee of Medical Journal editors as conforming to their editorial guidelines.

SLMA Newsletter

A monthly publication, The SLMA Newsletter contains information on monthly SLMA activities. In 2012 a separate, online email version, known as the eNotification Bulletin was started which encompassed news from all medical associations in Sri Lanka. [4]

Annual International Congress

This is the most important activity in the SLMA’s calendar of events. It has been held uninterrupted over the years since it was started in 1937 to mark the 50th anniversary of the association. [11]

The congress brings together a cross section of the medical fraternity from both the state and private sector, ranging from senior to junior specialists, generalists, post graduates, grade medical officers and even medical students. The sessions gives them the opportunity to present original research papers, exchange views, update their knowledge through various plenary, symposia and workshops and enjoy fellowship. We have invited a host of foreign experts who would be sharing with us the very latest developments in their respective fields. The sessions serve as the main Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activity for the profession in general and it is a much anticipated academic and social event in our medical calendar for giving useful and lasting links locally and internationally.

In addition the SLMA also conducts an annual “Foundation Session”,[12] monthly clinical meetings, regional sessions and many workshops throughout the year.
