My Garden is the upcoming debut studio album by American recording artist Kat Dahlia. The album is scheduled to be released on January 13, 2015. The album is set to feature hip hop and soul–styled production from the likes of Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Salaam Remi, among others. The album was supported by two singles, "Gangsta" and "Crazy", as well as the iTunes' "instant gratification" tracks, "Mirror" and "Clocks".
In January 2014, Complex listed My Garden, as the 46th most anticipated album of 2014.[7] After several delays, from being scheduled to be released in February 2014, to being rescheduled to September 2014, in October 2014, Epic Records settled on January 2015.
Background
At eighteen, after saving money from jobs as a waitress, Dahlia decided to leave Miami and moved to New York City a month later, "on a whim."[8] Shortly thereafter, Dahlia became involved in what she describes as a "toxic relationship," which she would later come to regard as a source of inspiration and "writer's gold."[9] After self-financing an extended play (EP) and a music video, Dahlia was discovered by Vested In Culture VP of A&R, Amanda Berkowitz. Berkowitz quickly brought Dahlia to the attention of veteran record executive Sylvia Rhone.[10] In 2012, describing Dahlia as "more than just a pop artist," Rhone signed her to her newly launched label, Vested In Culture (VIC), a joint venture with Epic Records. Dahlia's debut album is set be VIC's inaugural release.[11][12][13]
Recording and production
Guest production and songwriting involvement is slated to include Missy Elliott,[3] Doc McKinney,[3] Naughty Boy,[5] Salaam Remi,[4] J. Dens,[2] Tricky Stewart,[3] Future,[5] Tawanna "Frankie Storm" Dabney,[2] Illangelo,[6] and Timbaland.[14] In turn, the latter enlisted Dahlia to be part of his forthcoming album, Textbook Timbo.[4][14] American entertainers Snoop Dogg and Meleni "Polly A" Smith, who contributed to Dahlia's "Money Party",[15] are among the album's guest appearances.[14] In March 2013, Dahlia released the single "Gangsta" via iTunes alongside its music video via VEVO.[15][16] In May 2013, Dahlia stated that she wanted to release the Cinematic–produced "Fireman" as a follow-up to "Gangsta", also adding that she wanted to collaborate with hip-hop recording artists Eminem,[2][17] Kendrick Lamar,[2] and "even" Lauryn Hill for her debut.[4]
In July 2013, Vested in Culture founder Sylvia Rhone, announced via her official Twitter account that Kat Dahlia entered recording sessions with Timbaland and Missy Elliott.[18] Rhone spoke highly of the sessions, adding that it "felt like good 'ol days" and cited it as "magic".[18]
Release and promotion
On August 8, 2013, a song titled "Clocks" was released by Epic subsidiary label Vested in Culture exclusively via VEVO.[19] The following month, Dahlia performed a live acoustic rendition of the record as part of Billboard's Tastemaker Sessions.[20] On August 22, 2013, an album teaser of My Garden was released.[21] On November 21, 2013, Dahlia released a free extended play (EP) via digital download, titled Seeds: Mixtape. [22] The project includes six songs, including "Happy and I Know It".[23]
The album was at one point scheduled to be released in February 2014,[24] then rescheduled to May 2014,[25] and more recently moved to September 2014 by Epic Records.[1] On October 25, 2014, it was revealed the album would finally be released on January 13, 2015.[26]
Singles
On March 1, 2013, Dhalia's commercial debut single, titled "Gangsta", was released via digital distribution by Vested in Culture and Epic Records. The digital download also featured the songs "Mirror" and "Money Party", the latter of which features Polly A.[27]
On December 17, 2013, Dahlia released her latest single "Crazy" on her official website.[28] On February 20, 2014, Dahlia premiered the music video of the record during an appearance on BET's 106 & Park.[29]
