The following is a timeline of the history of the city of Los Angeles, California, USA.

Prior to 20th century

  • 1830 - Population: 730.[1]
  • 1847 - January 10: Los Angeles taken by U.S. forces.[1][2]
  • 1851 - Los Angeles Star newspaper begins publication.[3]
  • 1855 - Public school built.[1]
  • 1866 - Town Square established.[5]
  • 1868 - Street lighting installed.[5]
  • 1873 - Los Angeles Daily Herald newspaper begins publication.[6]
  • 1883 - City Railroad Company established.[8]
  • 1884 - Child's Grand Opera House opens.[9]
  • 1890 - Population: 50,400.
  • 1891 - Courthouse built.[1]
  • 1894 - Fiesta de Los Angeles begins.[1]
  • 1899 - Garvanza and University district become part of the City of Los Angeles.[1]

20th century

1900s-1950s

  • 1900 - Population: 102,479.[1]
  • 1934 - Los Angeles Science Fiction Society formed.[3]
  • 1946 - Los Angeles Rams football team active.[5]
  • 1947 - KTLA television begins broadcasting.[3]

1960s-1990s

  • 1966 - Los Angeles Zoo opens.[5]
  • 1970 - Chinatown Service Center established.[15]
  • 1980 - Population: 2,966,850.

21st century

  • 2006 - City Office of Historic Resources created.[1]
