    The place to discuss the article is Talk:Shooting of Michael Brown. There are already discussions about what to say regarding the cigarillos. The latest is Talk:Shooting of Michael Brown#RFC: Alleged theft of cigars from convenience store? It certainly has not been proved that he did not steal them.     messed-up articles

    The last two times I contributed information, once to the Uri Milstein page and the other the Yitzchak Rabin page, the page at the end of my edit, or after it, was italicized and also moved way off the screen;

    Question #1 how do I fix that.

    Question #2 how do I prevent it happening in the future.

    As an aside, how do you make the names of Wikipedia articles you mention show up as such (in blue type)

    I've reformatted your question since you put a space at the beginning of each line. This puts a box around the text and doesn't allow the text to wrap naturally. Dismas|(talk) 02:58, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    To answer your questions though, remove the space from the beginning of the line. And italics are put in by using two single quote marks ''like this'' which produces like this.     Wrong person on google

    When a certain name is typed into google, a side bar on the right of the page provided by Wikipedia offers a photo and information about the incorrect person with a similar name. Is there a way to fix this? If so who do I contact, so the correct information is displayed instead of an article of someone's page that doesn't even reach wikipedia's guidelines for notability?     It's not provided by Wikipedia. It's pulled from Wikipedia. Google does that and sometimes they make mistakes. But it's not any of our doing. You'll have to inform Google of the error. Dismas|(talk) 05:27, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I stop the table from being forced to the bottom?

    Default to Desktop view on Safari on iOS

    Hi!

    I used to be able to make the Desktop View default when viewing Wikipedia pages on my iPhone. Specifically, I use iOS 7 on an iPhone 5S. Is there any way to do this again that doesn't involve scrolling down to the bottom of the page to click on "Desktop" every time I open a new Wikipedia page? Thanks!

    Also, Wikipedia's interface is simple enough that most Android or iOS devices can handle the normal desktop version. Why do we even need a mobile version?

    @128.135.100.108: I access Wikipedia through a laptop and through a smartphone. The phone's screen is so tiny that the desktop version is very difficult to use on it.
    While some functionalities are missing from the mobile version, that's a problem to attack, not a reason to not have a mobile interface. I'm using the beta mobile version, and reporting bugs through Phabricator. --Thnidu (talk) 01:24, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Watson Farley & Williams LLP has changed its name from "Watson, Farley & Williams LLP" to "Watson Farley & Williams LLP" (removing the comma after "Watson"). The content of the Wiki page has been updated, however is it possible to update the referencing title of the page?

    How to include a paragraph of a page into another page?

    There is a page (A) containing a paragraph (X) of text with 5 lines. I'm going to create a page (B) that will contain some information, and I want to append/include the paragraph (X) of page (A), so I don't need to type the whole text again.     @Faltur: This should be very rarely done if at all for mainspace articles. Some reasons include that it makes it inaccessible to editors who want improve it or tailor it to the specifics of another article it is included in; any vandalism to the original page will result in that vandalism showing up everywhere it appears; its copyright attribution is divorced from the source; any secondary citations using named references in the original page will fail on the transcluded pages, etc. I suggest instead you copy and paste the text, providing copyright attribution in the edit summary.     What you do on Facebook isn't generally Wikipedia's concern - though if you copy an article there (as opposed to providing a link) you must comply with the terms of the Creative Commons license, which requires explicit attribution amongst other things. Note that this license covers the text. Images may be covered by other terms, and you'll need to check them individually. I suspect that it might be a lot simpler just to provide a link - and it is possible that Facebook's own terms also restrict what you can do, though you'll have to check that with them, not us.     I've gotten pretty good with the conversion template, but stuck on this one.     A user is deleting information on a band's page... the info is being put up by the owner of the band!

    There is a user named: MetalDiablo666 who has deleted/altered my official "facts/bio/info" on the page. A few minutes ago, i used the "undo" function to revert back to the recent and correct version of the page... again, what this user did was delete the official stuff and somehow leave incorrect facts... How can I prevent him from changing this page again?     Even if you do own the band, you do not own or control the article about the band, nor do you have any right to control its content. With your obvious and massive conflict of interest, you should never have edited the article at all, much less been messing around with it for so long.     A question about editing on wikipedia

    Are there any rules and/or guidelines on wikipedia which state that a user must contribute to wikipedia if they hope to have their user sub pages kept? So for example, can a user cease contributing to main space articles and instead contribute solely to their own user space, without having to worry about their user subpages being deleted?     Yes, it says "User pages about Wikipedia-related matters by established users usually do not qualify for deletion."     @JayJ47: WP:NOTWEBHOST is also relevant where it says user pages "should be used primarily to present information relevant to working on" WP, & "...user pages should not function as personal webpages or be repositories for large amounts of material that is irrelevant to collaborating on Wikipedia". If you are only editing your userpages/subpages and not contributing to improving WP, your pages could well be deleted. 'Abandoned' draft pages for example are deleted fairly regularly. I had a few old drafts deleted, though they were on my old IP sub page, and hadn't been edited in years.     Page view comparison of multiple articles

    I know that you can find out the page views of a particular page on Wikipedia by first clicking on the History tab and then clicking on "Page View Statistics". Is there a tool available where you can type the names of multiple articles and then compare the page views of all of the articles together. It would be a real time saver. Thanks.     In case you don't know, the page view tool has a pagename field next to the "Go" button. It only works on one page at a time but it's often faster than going via the page history. However, the field is currently broken for me. You can write the pagename directly in the url instead but I don't know whether it works for all characters.     I am writing on behalf of The Shepherd Building Group. I work for the company and need to change the logo on the page as it is incorrect.

    Please understand that this is not "your" page, it is Wikipedia's page about your company, please read our policy on ownership of articles. It can include any information that is taken from reliable sources, whether that is praise or criticism of the company.
    You cannot "gain control of editing the page" - please read and follow our policy on conflict of interest, which explains why you should not be editing the page at all, and what to do if you want changes made. Similarly "The user who uploaded the logo" had no need to be "instructed to by the company".
    If you wish the logo to be updated, please supply a URL of where the new logo can be found - or ask at files for upload - Arjayay (talk) 09:38, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    I assume that the logo you would like to see on the page is this one. Getting it into the article in place of the one currently there will be easy, except for one thing. Wikipedia is careful to obey laws regarding copyright, and only uses images which it is legally entitled to use, either because they are in the public domain, or under "fair use" rules. As far as I can tell, neither of these applies to Shepherd's current logo. If the company is willing to release its copyright in the image, there are (lengthy and tedious) instructions here.     On 21st November an editor was taken to WP:SPI for suspected sock-puppeting and there is a long backlog for dealing with these cases. This case is still low down on the list. Today the editor has opened yet another account in a different name (this is clear from comparing userpage details). Just add the new account's name below, and in the same format as, the other entry or entries in the "Suspected sockpuppets" section, and add a signed and dated note—below your original explanation of the report (if you were the original filer) or in the "Comments by other users" section (if you weren't)—pointing out that you've added the account to the report.     References and categories not displaying properly

    Hi! I seem to be experiencing a technical glitch, or I did something the wrong way, but cannot figure out what... I just created a new stub article, First Council of Dvin, put the reflist under a reference header at the bottom, then added a navbox and 2 categories, but they don't display when I save the page.     No. If you look at the box at the top of your sandbox page you'll see a green button with the text "Submit your draft for review!".     Around 1972, one or two American runners were sanctioned for standing around during the medal ceremony. They said they were minding their own business like white people minding their own business among black people. What happened/who were these famous people?     Image licence question

    The section on German compounds mentions the German language can be used to produce surprisingly long compound words. I have seen the word Banküberfallvorbereitungsüberwachungsdatenspeicherungsgesetz used in a German Donald Duck comic book, and it clearly seems to illustrate a surprisingly long German compound word. If I take a photograph of the panel where Chief O'Hara is arresting Black Pete, citing this (fictional) law, am I allowed to publish it on Wikipedia? Since nothing you've said indicates the image is in the public domain or bears a compatible free license, the issue is whether the intended use of this non-free copyrighted material would be permitted under fair use and I don't think it would. It's not as if this example of a surprisingly long German word is the only example one could use that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose.     I am editing the Wikipedia site for my old professor, George W. Hilton. Trains Magazine has sent me a new obituary that they ran in their November issue with their permission to post it on Wikipedia. But, while I know how to enter a link to a pdf that is on another site (eg, AEI), how do I attach the pdf file directly to George's Wikipedia site? When I click on edit the references, it does not take me to the reference section where there are presently four references. Thanks,

    Filedelinkerbot problem

    Commons:File:Trevelin.jpg has recently been deleted, see Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Trevelin.jpg. This image was used in articles in several Wikipedia languages. User:Filedelinkerbot quickly removed the reference to this file from Trevelin in English Wikipieda, but it has not removed the references in corresponding articles in eight other languages: br:Trevelin, cy:Trevelin, es:Trevelin, eu:Trevelin, fr:Trevelin, it:Trevelin, pt:Trevelin and sco:Trevelin. Should I raise this in User talk:Filedelinkerbot? I could edit these pages manually, but I am wary of editing a page in a language that I don't understand. In each case, a recent edit replaced a valid image with the now-deleted image. I hope that a new edit will prompt the restoration of the original image by an editor watching the page.     @Verbcatcher: As far as I'm aware, Filedelinkerbot only operates on the English and German versions of Wikipedia. To expand the bot to run on other language-versions of Wikipedia would require the bot go through whatever bot-approval process those wikis have.     How can I make one source be sited more than once as the same number. For example if I want to use the first source in the first paragraph of my article and then that same source in paragraph 30, when many sources have been cited in between.

    Hello @Jg9611: you have 2 page parameters (page, pages, at) at once in this reference. You'll need to remove one. If the source consists of several pages, use "pages" and specify a range or "page1, page2, ...". On a side note, accessdate needs a different date format, "../../.." is not supported.     Technical question regarding image formatting

    Hi guys. The summary of my question/issue is this. What I want to do is place two or more images next to each other on a page (rather than one underneath the other which usually occurs), with a frame and a caption, but without using a < gallery > tag. Wikipedia:Extended image syntax has an example of what I want to do under the "Overlaying annotations on an image" section, but the problem is that it uses a template to achieve this. I don't want to use the template because I'm actually already using a template to display the image (long story, I can explain more about this if it's relevant). What I'm hoping though is that actually there is a simple wiki syntax that will allow me to do what I've described above, without getting into too much black magic CSS coding.     • Actually, I think it would be easier if I just show you what I'm working on and trying to do. I have two templates, each one displays a random image from a collection of images each time the template is referenced. The two templates are here and here. You can view the template code (it's fairly simple) to see how the image syntax is used there. I've created a basic page on my sandbox in which I'm trying to make the two randomised images display next to each other rather than under each other. I need to use a template for the image itself because my template randomises the image.     Image rotated 90 degrees

    I'm trying to upload a photo of Kenneth Johnson (producer), but Wikipedia rotates the image onto its side when I upload it (see the file here). Searching the archives I see that someone had the same problem three years ago, but although they solved it then, their discussion doesn't help me, since ukepat doesn't explain how he was able to upload a version which Wikipedia won't automatically rotate.     The MediaWiki software as of 5 October 2011 checks image metadata such as EXIF and automatically rotates the image when it is uploaded. The file page may show the upright image, but thumbnails may be rotated. At the bottom of the file page there is a Metadata section— click on "Show extended details" to see the orientation.

    The file may be stored on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. If the text below the image is "This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons", then it is on Commons.

    • If the file is on Commons, then click on "description page there" to directly open the image on Commons.
      • If you are registered and logged in, then use the Request rotation link directly below the image and a bot will correct the orientation automatically.
      • If you are not registered, then edit the page and add {{rotate}} per the documentation.

    • If the file is on Wikipedia, then
      • the file will need to be downloaded, fixed using editing software and reuploaded.

    There are versions of Wikipedia in many languages. If you found an article in English Wikipedia that is in German, it is in the wrong place.

According to MOS:DATERANGE the preferred form would be "c. 303 – c. 325", although that produces the same error. "303–325" works, but omits the circa. "c. 303" works, but omits the range. I've tried various other combinations without success. I assume this is some overzealous editing somewhere in the bowels of template:citation, but I've not yet managed to follow that code far enough to find where, yet. Any suggestions?     You can mention that on the talk page of the article to which you want that statement added, with a reliable source to that effect. It isn't obvious whether you want that mentioned in an article about the airplane or in an article about the museum.     (edit conflict) The error message in Chris Bush (English footballer) says "Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page)." and in the error message the blue text "help page" is a wikilink to the specific help page which describes the problem. The problem was caused by this edit which added a <ref> tag without a complete </ref> to terminate it. You need to undue that edit, and you can then address the mismatched brackets from an earlier edit which broke the wikilink for "London".     Correct, and CTRL+- will reduce it and CTRL+0 (zero) will return it to 'normal' size. As Orange Mike says, it is possible to set the Browser so the size of the font will appear as you want/need it.     The use of copyrighted material on Wikipedia from web sites or books is not easy to work. Wikipedia will only allow copyrighted material if the material has been released under a Creative Commons copyleft for use anywhere else. Copyright owners sometimes assume that releasing the copyrighted material for use on Wikipedia only is sufficient. It is not. The release has to permit general reuse. In this case, the artist may not want to release the biography for general reuse, and we do not allow it to be released only for Wikipedia. Also, even if the copyrighted material could be used, copyrighted material taken from private web sites is usually too promotional and non-neutral to meet Wikipedia's standards.     Regarding the use of a copyrighted image that I have permission to use

    I have asked the owner of an image for permission to use it on the Lawrie Sanchez page as there are no other images available in the public domain/for free.

    The owner's reply was "I don't have any objections to you using that image on his Wikipedia page, as long as you include my copyright line in the text associated with the image as follows: Image © Gary Hynard 2007".

    There is a common misconception that the owner of a copyright can release either text or an image for use in Wikipedia without releasing it for general use.     It is my understanding that the history of a deleted article is deleted so that only administrators can see it. A JIP says about anonymity, you need to consider privacy issues as once your picture is on the internet, it will be hard to totally erase it if you later change your mind. I had a look around other Wikis and found this one at the Uzbek wiki, but can't seem to add it. Failing that, I also found a map at the Ukrainian wiki at the bottom of the infobox here, but can't seem to get the coding right for the map to show.     Question about creating an article about a Finnish song

    There is a well-known Finnish children's song fi:Hottentottilaulu, a 1961 Finnish translation from a Norwegian song. It is a happy and humorous song about the Khoikhoi, although filled with stereotypes, which seemed completely innocent at the time, but which are seen as somewhat racist today. I have always seen it as a simple children's song, with an addictive melody, and believe it was not intended as racist. Should I translate the article to English? If so, how would I title it?     Whether a subject is racist, or in other respects objectionable, is of no consequence for whether Wikipedia may have an article about it: all that is required is that it be notable. If the article in the Finnish Wikipedia is adequately referenced by the standards of English Wikipedia, then by all means translate it. If you can find any reliable sources in English, so much the better, but Finnish ones are acceptable as long as they are reliable and properly support the information that they purport to.     I am currently having very severe problems with my log-in on both Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. It started happening suddenly yesterday, but the same thing happened six months ago and back then it went on for about 2 weeks before it got better, which happened more or less spontaneously bit by bit. Here is what is is going on:

    I am losing my logged-in status AND MY PASSWORD VALIDITY, numerous times each hour. Every time I open a new window or even just go away from the computer for 20 minutes and then click back in again, the software drops my log-in. Then my current password no longer works to log me back in, so I have to request a temporary password AND THEN CREATE A NEW PASSWORD again and again and again several times an hour every hour.

    I am on a Mac with OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.1. I was using Safari, but I just now switched to Firefox to see if that would make a difference, but it really didn't help very much at all.

    This is extremely difficult and extremely time-consuming; it makes working almost impossible especially because I was uploading images to Commons and then putting them in place on Wikipedia

    When this happened 6 months ago, I couldn't find anyone who had any idea what could be causing this, or had any idea how to fix it. Using my talk page is very difficult right now because of this, but i can at least look and see what people are saying here..

    @Sudeeptha: Who is "we"? You Sudeeptha have as your only edit [3] the comment above. If you created and submitted content it has been deleted. If someone else submitted content, the process provides a note that the process is severely backlogged and may take several months for a volunteer to reach the review status.     You are trying to put 891 articles into one book, which is simply too many.
    As Help:Books states "books that result in PDFs with more than 500 pages are probably too big". Many of your articles will produce several PDF pages, so at a guess your book will have >2000 pages.

    I added an article about Joseph Rodney Moss, a South Carolina Supreme Court justice. Because there is very little information available about him, the basics of his life are recited in staccato form: "He attended Erskine College." Some editor has tagged it as a copyright violation. It isn't. And I'm not saying that as someone who is unfamiliar with copyright issues; I am a lawyer who has handled intellectual property claims. While some of the phrases are similar (by necessity), they are not copied. I specifically reworked as much as could be reworked without getting ridiculous, but there are only so many ways to say such simple, biographical facts. The similar phrases giving rise to the tag include things like "University of South Carolina School of Law"! That is a proper noun, not a lifted phrase! The editor who tagged the article doesn't seem to have actually thought about what he is tagging. The template that has been inserted into the article does not provide any way of actually contesting the claim of copyright issues at all. It just tells people how to do things like submit statements consenting to the reuse of secondary sources. That's not what I'm doing. There IS NOT a violation in the first place.     I wrote a page for Necessary Clothing and included only facts- dates, names of owners, etc. I used a small snippet about Soho area in New York which I modeled after a wikipedia post about Soho and my article was still called advertisement even though it only included very basic facts. What can I include in the article about the company since facts are not allowed? Should I exclude the dates, business owners, and area and put more fluff related material? Is that better?     On 4\12\2014 , I added some better and correct information on Kerala than the biased write up there and received some notification that i have not given source or facts and it is false. All, that I had edited is given in various chapter of Wikipedia it self, what more reference do you want. It is unfortunate that in Wikipedia now there is no scope for corrections of biased articles like this. By the way I have contributed and was instrumental in opening the article on Thirunainar Kurichi Madhavan Nair and gave lots of information for Bharath Bhushan (Hindi film actor), and many other Wikipedia articles earlier , and there was no such problem. Here the editor\whoever of the article Kerala is strict in promoting his views only with no scope of adding correct information and may be a male chauvinist (eg; I added names of Kerala's Major Actress and is this not a fact as per your notice to me , According to your article Kerala, in Kerala cinema there are no Actress , is that a fact? ) and readers will know all here are not unbiased facts as you think and is ignorant of lots of genuine information .     It isn't clear from your post what article you are saying is biased. Is it Kerala or Malayalam cinema or Bharat Bhushan? I see that you have not tried discussing any content issues on any article talk pages. The best place to discuss content issues, including sourcing issues, is on article talk pages.     Mr. Mazuco. I left my comment on my great-uncle José Júlio da Costa in the Wikipedia page which is full of many  gross errors written by very ignorant or very ill intended people. Moreover, I am a researcher and historian. Who are you to reverse whatever? Are you not a Brazilian? What do you know about the history of Portugal? Isn't  your specialty  pop  music?     Just to catch everyone up, the OP insisted on the Entertainment Ref Desk that we start an article on Super Bowl LIII.     Super Bowl LII was created 3 August 2013, Super Bowl LI on 22 October 2012, Super Bowl L in 2006. Based on recent history, then, we're already late with LIII, and Google News Archive returns 25 hits for "Super Bowl LIII". What's the problem?
