The Talos Principle is a first person[3][4] puzzle video game with a philosophical storyline,[5][6][7] created by Croatian developer Croteam,[6][8] who is best known for their Serious Sam video game series.[8][5] It was simultaneously released on Linux, OS X and Windows on 11 December 2014,[6][9] and is slated for release on PlayStation 4 and Android platforms in Q1 of 2015.[9][6]

Gameplay

The Talos Principle is a narrative-based experience[2] that features more than 120 puzzles.[10][11] The game puts the player in the body of a robot with a seemingly human consciousness.[12] The player solves puzzles using various gadgets scattered around the environment,[1] including drones, turrets, and the "replication of time",[8] electromagnetic jammers, crystalline refractors, fans and computer terminals.[12] The environment interlocks greenery and stone of a ruined castle with futuristic technology.[4]

Development

The story was written by Tom Jubert (The Swapper, FTL) and Jonas Kyratzes.[6][13] The game underwent roughly 15,000 hours of playtesting at the hands of a bot.[11]

Marketing

The Talos Principle was shown in Sony's E3 2014 presentation,[8] after which Time featured the game as one of its "favorite hidden gems from 2014's show".[5] Before the game's release, Croteam published a free game demo for Linux, OS X and Windows on Steam, that featured four increasingly difficult complete puzzle levels as well as a benchmarking bot.[9][11][7][14] Croteam also released a free teaser minigame for The Talos Principle called Sigils of Elohim,[15][16] that offers sets of one puzzle type with tetrominoes that's found throughout The Talos Principle.[14][17][18] Croteam had also built a community around the game through a series of contests and giveaways.[19]

Reception

The Talos Principle received positive reviews from critics, with aggregate scores of 85.88% (8 reviews) on GameRankings[20] and 86/100 (11 reviews) on Metacritic.[21] IGN comments: "The Talos Principle includes excellent puzzles and heady philosophy, but stumbles where the two intersect."[24] PC Gamer: "An adept and satisfying puzzle game with a narrative that requires a bit of player investment to yield its biggest rewards."[25] Destructoid: "Impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding it back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash."[22] Eurogamer: "The Talos Principle is a game of challenges and conundrums and philosophical wonderings, filled with logic puzzles and cerebral mysteries."[23] VentureBeat: "You've got to be in the mood for Talos. It's demanding of your time and attention, especially if you're the type that wants to finish most things you start. And you've got to have a love affair with words. But if that describes you... this game can be magical."[26] Hardcore Gamer: "The Talos Principle expects you to be smart and knows you've got the brain to figure it out, and the reward for it being right is the a sense of satisfaction at solving something properly tricky."[28] The Escapist: "The Talos Principle is a game for people who love solving puzzles and discussing philosophy. Enjoy games like Portal but want a more serious game? This game is one to check out."[27]

Several video game programmers and designers have also commented on the game. Markus Persson, creator of Minecraft, wrote: "The Talos Principle. It's challenging and makes you think. And there are puzzles as well."[29] Alexander Bruce, creator of puzzle game Antichamber, commented: "Man. The Talos Principle was so excellent. My god. I loved it. Holy shit. Exceptional puzzle design and narrative structure."[30]
