Background and Career

Shy Carter was born in Madison, WI, on August 21, 1984. He grew up as a middle child, with one brother, Jamin, two years older and another, Micah, two years younger and lived with his father, Gregory 'Luke' Carter and mother, Mary 'Therese' Carter. Luke had two previous sons, Greg and Todd.

Their family moved around for Luke's job at the IRS, but for the majority of his childhood, Blake grew up in Memphis, TN. In 1999, Blake's family moved to Cedar Springs, MI and he finished up his last year of high school at Cedar Springs High School.

Blake's uncle gave him a Casio keyboard for Christmas when he was 11 years old. He began to write raps to the pre-made beats before creating his own. At 13 years old, he sang in a R&B group in Memphis. He became serious about recording at 16 years old.

As a dish washer at Rio Grande, Shy met an artist who was signed to Amiracle Records, a small record label in Grand Rapids, MI. Shy eventually signed with Amiracle Records and was part of a compilation album, released in 2001.

Blake attended Grand Valley State University from 2002-2006, graduating with a B.A. in Marketing. A friend of his gave one of his rough songs to WSNX 104.5 the Top 40 station in Grand Rapids, MI. "I Got Soul" quickly rose in popularity and was in heavy rotation. He then finished producing, writing, mixing and released his first independent solo album in his last year of college.

After graduating, Shy moved to Atlanta in 2007 for a couple of years after he signed a production deal with Nelly to create tracks and write songs. He signed a Publishing agreement with Primary Wave in 2008.

In September 2009 Rob Thomas released one of the songs Shy helped to write, "Someday", which became Rob Thomas' third career No. 1 on Billboard Magazine's Adult Top 40 chart.

While living in Nashville, Shy and co-writer Kevin Griffin (Better Than Ezra) wrote "Stuck Like Glue", picked up by Sugarland, who did further writing on the track. "Stuck Like Glue" was released in July 2010, selling almost three million copies and became the 11th most downloaded country music song of all time, and the highest debut for a country group or duo on the Hot 100, debuting at No. 20.

Shy released the song "Shorty Is A Weirdo" in March of 2011, with Ray J and Mr. Midwest.

In May of 2012, American Idol runner-up Haley Reinhart released "Listen Up!" with Shy's song, "Let's Run Away" which he co-wrote and produced.

In May of 2013 Marcus Canty's album, "This is Marcus Canty" on the song "Don't Keep in Touch."

In 2013, Shy was a part of two songs on country artist Billy Currington's album "We Are Tonight". He co-wrote, produced and sang background on "Hallelujah" as well as rapped a verse on "Banana Pancakes."

Shy appeared on the "Supreme Diva of Mexican Pop" Gloria Trevia's album "De Pelicula", singing a rap verse on "Hablablah".

Personal Life

Shy Carter is married to Jennifer Cato and currently resides in Los Angeles.
