Misao Okawa (大川 ミサヲ, Ōkawa Misao, sometimes romanized as Misawo Okawa; born March 5, 1898)[1] is a Japanese supercentenarian who is, at the age of 116 years, 317 days the world's oldest living person, holding the title since the death of 116-year-old Japanese man Jiroemon Kimura on June 12, 2013.[2]
Okawa is the verified oldest ever Japanese person, the oldest person born in Asia, and the sixth oldest verified person ever. She was the 30th verified person to reach the age of 115 and the 10th verified person to reach the age of 116.
She is the last living Japanese person to have been born in the 1800s.[3]
Biography
Okawa was born the fourth daughter of a draper in the Tenma district (present-day Kita-ku) of Osaka. She now lives at a nursing home in Higashisumiyoshi-ku, Osaka.[4]
She married Yukio Okawa in 1919 and had three children, two daughters and one son, of whom her son Hiroshi and one daughter Shizuyo are still alive.[4] Her husband died on June 20, 1931.[5] She has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.[4] [6] She was able to walk until she was 110, when she began using a wheelchair to prevent falls. She can however, propel herself in her wheelchair.[4]
Longevity
Okawa has been the world's oldest living woman since the death of 115-year-old Japanese woman Koto Okubo on January 12, 2013.[7] On February 27, 2013, a few days before her 115th birthday, she was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest living woman in the world, and was presented with a certificate at her nursing home in Osaka.[6]
Okawa has said that sushi and sleep are the reasons why she has lived so long.[8]
