Phat

The term Phat has a number of uses:

• Phat is an adjective in African American slang used to express approval. Hence, someone or something that is phat could be cool, rich, entertaining, intelligent, attractive or otherwise to be admired. When the word first surfaced in the 1960s, men generally used it to describe attractive, or "fine", women. African American males traditionally have preferred heavier, more curvaceous women than their Caucasian counterparts. The term is a deliberate misspelling of the word fat and transforms what many consider a negative into a positive. Such word play is a common feature of African American oral tradition. Since the word's association with hip hop culture in the 1990s, various explanations regarding the etymology of the term have arisen. Various fake etymologies explaining the term as an acronym are: "Pretty Hot And Tempting", "Plenty of Hips And Thighs", "Pussy, Hips And Tits", or "Pretty Hot Ass n' Titties."
