Future Earth is a 10-year international research programme that studies human and environmental aspects of global change.
Its mission is to increase and connect knowledge to intensify the impact of scientific research for sustainable development. It was launched in June 2012, at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20)[1].
Future Earth is a programme of the Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability comprising the International Council for Science (ICSU), the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Belmont Forum of funding agencies, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations University (UNU), and the World Meteorological Organization as an observer. [2]
Future Earth will bring together [3] the existing research programmes on global environmental change DIVERSITAS, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP), and will work in close partnership with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
