Mamoru Chiba (地場 衛, Chiba Mamoru) is the only major male human character appearing in the manga and anime known as Sailor Moon. His 'code name' in battles is Tuxedo Kamen ('Kamen' pronounced [ˌkaˈmɛn] in IPA) or Tuxedo Mask. References either way are almost even (with "Tuxedo Mask" slightly outweighing "Tuxedo Kamen"). Most recent print sources refer to him as "Tuxedo Mask," while older print sources are mixed between both names. He is known as Darien Shields in the English adaptations. In DIC's first promo for the American adaptation, he was known as "The Masked Tuxedo". When MiXX took over he was known as Darien Phillips. A preliminary dub name for Mamoru, that appeared on Kodansha's English website in an advertisement for the series, was said to be Mark.
He is most known to Sailor Moon fans as the rose-throwing Tuxedo Kamen of the Japanese anime. Wearing a mask to conceal his identity, he interferes with the Dark Kingdom's operations and encourages the Sailor Team with advice appropriate for the situation.
Name etymology
The kanji breaks down as such: first kanji chi means earth, ground which is the same kanji that is used in the word chikyuu which refers to the planet Earth. The second kanji ba translates to location, place. Together, they form the word chiba which, when the two kanji are placed together like this mean local. The third mamoru literally translates to protector, guardian. So his name would be translated as "Local Guardian." The English dub parallels this by naming him Darien which means "protector".
Character
Sailor Moon (Dark Kingdom Arc)
Mamoru Chiba's past is completely unknown even by him. This is because his parents died in a car crash when he was very young, and because of the severity of the accident he has blocked the memories of his past life from his head. This often causes him physical pain which makes him vulnerable to mental attacks by the Dark Kingdom, among other enemies.
From the first series, Mamoru Chiba's alter ego is Tuxedo Mask. In the beginning, he would blackout whenever Sailor Moon was in danger. He had no idea that during the time when he have these blackouts, he would turn into Tuxedo Mask and go and rescue Sailor Moon. Aside from his headaches and blackouts, he would also have these dreams of a princess urging him to help her find the ginzuishou, a mystical silver crystal imbued with great power. (The ginzuishou is called a variety of different names in the dubbed American version, the most popular being the "Silver Imperium Crystal". Literally translated, ginzuishou simply means "silver crystal.")
In order to find the ginzuishou, one must gather the seven nijizuishou ("rainbow crystals"). It is during this time that both the Dark Kingdom and the Sailor Soldiers are also looking for the nijizuishou. Zoisite and Kunzite, two of the Shitennou, set up a trap so that Tuxedo Mask would come and rescue a fake Sailor Moon. While fighting Tuxedo Mask's fell away, revealing Mamoru's identity and he was also injured in the process. Zoisite calls for a meeting with Tuxedo Mask at the Starlight Tower. The injured Mamoru makes his way to the Tower and bumps into Usagi Tsukino in the process. Usagi realizes that Mamoru is injured and follows him to the Tower. Later, trapped in the elevator, Mamoru finds out that Usagi is actually Sailor Moon! Mamoru's identity as Tuxedo Mask was also revealed to Usagi. Protecting Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask was stabbed by spears thrown by Zoisite that was meant for Sailor Moon. Grieving for Mamoru, Usagi's hidden power was revealed and her teardrop was combined with the seven nijizuishou to turn into the ginzuishou. Usagi turns into Princess Serenity (her reincarnation from her past life) and memories from their past life are revealed. One of the revealed truths is that Mamoru turns out to be the reincarnation of Prince Endymion.
During the Silver Millennium, Prince Endymion was the ruler of the Planet Earth. He and Princess Serenity from the Moon Kingdom fell in love with each other. However, Beryl, from Earth was possessed by an evil force, Queen Metallia, and swore to take over the Moon Kingdom. A war broke out between the Earth and Moon; Prince Endymion defected and swore to protect Princess Serenity. Beryl, who had her sights set on Endymion, killed both him and Princess Serenity. (In the manga, Endymion is killed and the Princess commits suicide) Queen Serenity sacrificed herself and used the power of the Silver Crystal to seal away Beryl and Metallia. With the last of her strength, she sent Princess Serenity, Prince Endymion, and the Sailor Senshi to Earth to be reincarnated in the present day.
Prince Endymion reincarnated as Mamoru Chiba and protects Princess Serenity's reincarnation, Usagi Tsukino, to this day. Mamoru can transform into Prince Endymion, usually choosing to do so around the same time as Sailor Moon transforms into Princess Serenity.
In the DiC English dub, he is known as Prince Darien.
After all of the senshi's past memories returned, Queen Beryl took the injured Mamoru away and brainwashed him into becoming a villain. He goes by the name Prince Endymion as a villain. In the final fight with Queen Beryl, Endymion dies while protecting Sailor Moon once again. At the end of the first series, Usagi pleads for the ginzuishou to grant her wish to return everything to normal. Everyone was brought back to life, and their memories of the Dark Kingdom, and of Mamoru and Usagi's relationship with each other, were locked away.
Sailor Moon R
Mamoru had no memory of anything that happened in the first series. Usagi did her best to revive his memories of her and their love together. During this time, a mysterious character, the Tsukikage no Knight (literally, "moon shadow knight/knight of the moonlight," known as the Moonlight Knight in the dubbed American version), appears each time that Sailor Moon gets into trouble, similar to the fashion in which Tuxedo Mask/Kamen appeared. Later on, it was revealed in the English version that the Tsukikage no Knight was actually a part of Mamoru's soul, whose love for Usagi is so strong that the knight was created so that he could continue to protect his beloved. In the Japanese version, the Tsukikage no Knight is actually the embodiment of Mamoru's past memories, separated from his body by Usagi's crystal. [1]
After the Makaiju arc of the anime (which did not exist in the original manga), Mamoru's memory was returned but just when things were going well for him and Usagi, Chibiusa appeared. Mamoru started having dreams again. In these dreams, he was in the middle of a wedding ceremony with Usagi when disaster struck. A voice in his dream warns him that tragedy will come if he continued a romantic relationship with the princess. Because of these dreams, Mamoru tells Usagi that he needs some time away from her. Mamoru decided to follow the voice because he loved Usagi enough to protect her, even if that resulted in his own discomfort. When Usagi has the same dream, Usagi and Mamoru get back together and become a couple again, reuniting with a romantic kiss.
Later on, it turns out the voice in his dreams was actually King Endymion, ruler of Crystal Tokyo in the 30th century — Mamoru's future self. When Tuxedo Kamen travels with the senshi to the 30th century to save it, King Endymion (or a holograph of him) explains that the purpose of the dream was to test the strength of the love between Mamoru and Usagi. When this is cleared, and after Dirmando kidnaps Usagi and Mamoru must fight him to get Usagi back, he obtains Usagi's forgiveness and comes back to her.
Sailor Moon S
Usagi and Mamoru are dating and are boyfriend and girlfriend. They are a couple throughout the season and share many moments together. Mamoru's love for Usagi guides her when she needs him. When Usagi looses her powers, Mamoru protects her and comes to her rescue as Tuxedo Mask. The deep love that Usagi and Mamoru share forms the Spiral Heart Moon Rod and Mamoru's love helps Usagi's powers return. Mamoru cheers Usagi up and comforts her when she needs him. Mamoru knows what is to come and becomes very mature in this season. Mamoru is Usagi's boyfriend and future husband as well as her protector. They go through many obstacles together as a couple and make it though them.
When it is Usagi's birthday, Mamoru buys her the glass slippers Usagi had wanted. They had gotten into a misunderstanding, but when it is resolved, Mamoru shows Usagi the glass slippers. Usagi and Mamoru hold each other and make up. When Mamoru is kidnapped while protecting Usagi, Usagi runs to the top of a tower to save Mamoru. After a battle, Mamoru is freed and Mamoru and Usagi reunite and hug. Mamoru and Usagi make up together that night.
Throughout the season, Mamoru stays devoted to Usagi and whatever comes between them, they are able to make it through each obstacle they face. Usagi and Mamoru know that the love they share will always prevail and that they will spend their lives together. They are devoted to each other and their relationship as a couple becomes very strong in this season.
Sailor Moon SuperS
Mamoru is devoted to his girlfriend, Usagi and protects her whenever she needs his help. When Saori, a student from Mamoru's school, goes over to Mamoru's apartment, Mamoru introduces Usagi as his girlfriend. Saori tries to break them up, but she sees Mamoru's love for Usagi when he holds her in his arms, calls out her name and rescues her. Usagi and Mamoru hold hands as Saori looks on and sees how much Mamoru loves Usagi.
Mamoru shares many more loving moments with Usagi. Mamoru spends all of his money he was carrying and buys Usagi a dress. Usagi is touched and Mamoru puts his arm around Usagi. When Usagi and Mamoru are on a date in an aquarium, Usagi holds onto Mamoru's arm lovingly. Fisheye, a member of the Amazon Trio, sees this and tries to break them up. Mamoru stays devoted to Usagi. Mamoru does many wonderful gestures for Usagi as her boyfriend. He takes her to the dentist, he takes her to parties as his girlfriend, he risks his life to protect her, he takes her on dates and he helps her study.
When Mamoru has an illness, Usagi notices that he looks hurt. It is revealed that whenever the earth is in pain, he feels it. Usagi treats Mamoru while he is in bed and holds his hand. Mamoru apologizes for not being able to be there. Usagi promises to cure him.
Sailor Stars
At the beginning of the Sailor Stars series, the villainess from the previous arc (Sailormoon SuperS), Nehelenia (also spelled Nepherenia and Neherenia) is resurrected. When she shatters the mirror she was trapped inside, shards fall in the eyes of people across Tokyo, including Mamoru. The shard causes him to have extreme pain in his eye; later he also has headaches. At the most advanced stages, he is controlled by Nehelenia, who takes him to her palace/headquarters. As a result, the timeline is bent, causing Chibi-usa to fade out of existence (since her existence is actually uncertain). Sailor Moon travels to Nehelenia's point and heals Mamoru.
In the fifth series, Mamoru leaves to study at a University in the United States. Before he leaves, he slips a ring on the fourth finger of Usagi's left hand, often interpreted as a tacit proposal. He promises to answer Usagi's letters as she writes (and the opening scenes/synopsis of the episodes are usually in the form of Usagi's letters to Mamoru.)
However, sometime when his plane was in the air, Sailor Galaxia -- the head villainess in this arc -- attacks the plane, having sensed a true star seed. Mamoru, as Tuxedo Kamen, attempts to confront her, but she easily extracts his star seed, effectively killing him. As he dies, he warns Galaxia that the Sailor Senshi on Earth would stop her ambition. When the power of Sailor Moon's forgiveness gave Galaxia the power to expel Chaos from her body, Mamoru was resurrected in episode 200. He was last seen kissing Usagi. His current location is unknown. We do not know if he remained in Tokyo or returned to his studies in America.
Manga
Tuxedo Kamen was portrayed significantly differently in the manga version of the series. The most pronounced difference is that he never threw or even held a rose throughout the entire manga series. Instead, he had the power of psychometry. This was not explored in detail until the second arc (the equivalent of Sailor Moon R) where Kino Makoto explained that he had the ability to transfer energy and read impressions of objects through touch. He was also taught by King Endymion, the future version of himself to use this ability offensively, an attack called "Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber," a pun on the French word for "Tuxedo." Also, like Sailor Saturn, he has the ability to heal injuries. This power is actually touched on in the S and Super S anime, but only for very brief moments.
Another major difference is that in the manga, Tuxedo Kamen, like Sailor Moon, was supposed to have his own guardians and advisors. It's also interesting to note that it was the Dark Kingdom Generals (Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoiscite and Kuzite) that were supposed to fill that role. Back in the Silver Millennium, they were to Prince Endymion the equivalent of the Sailor Soldiers to Sailor Moon. Unfortunately, when the Dark Kingdom attacked, they were brainwashed by Queen Beryl and turned against Earth. After the Moon Kingdom was destroyed, the Four Generals found themselves reborn on Earth along with all the others and began to search for Mamoru so he could become Prince Endymion again. Unfortunately, they were discovered by Queen Beryl and once again turned to evil before they could find him. Eventually, they all die one by one at the hands of the Sailor Soldiers, but they make a brief cameo in the second arc when they appear to Mamoru in a vision. At a moment when Mamoru is feeling powerless and weak, the Four Generals appear for encouragement, telling him that as Prince and future King, he does have to power to fight alongside Sailor Moon. However, after that one brief appearance, the four of them are never seen again.
Tuxedo Kamen's importance in the manga is significantly played up in several ways. In fact, many of Sailor Moon's transformations and final victories come as a result of her and Tuxedo Kamen fusing their powers together. In the final battle against the Dark Kingdom, Queen Metallia absorbed Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen into her body. However, they were able to combine their powers through the Silver Crystal to destroy Queen Metallia from within. This was essentially the inspiration for the climax of the Sailor Moon R movie when Tuxedo Kamen transformed into Prince Endymion and helped Sailor Moon use the Silver Crystal to prevent an asteroid from crashing into the Earth. In the second story arc (Sailor Moon R), he combined his power with Sailor Moon through the Moon Scepter to kill Prince Diamond of the Black Moon Kingdom. Later, they fused their powers together to transport Chibi Usa to them for the final battle against the Death Phantom. In the third story arc (Sailor Moon S), he combined his powers with both Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon to create the Holy Grail, transforming Sailor Moon into Super Sailor Moon.
The reasons for this constant fusion are never fully known until the fourth story arc (Super S), when all the answers come. As the Dead Moon invasion corrupts the Earth, both Usagi and Mamoru find themselves dying from a mysterious form of lung cancer. To save their lives, Helios transports them to Elysion, which used to be the Earth Kingdom when Mamoru was Prince Endymion. There, he explains that their infection is caused by their ties to the Earth. During the Silver Millennium, Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion were both born with a specific mission; to protect the Earth. They did this with the help of their crystals: The Princess with the SILVER Crystal and the Prince with the GOLDEN Crystal. According to Helios, the Silver Crystal and the Golden Crystal are two halves of the same whole, created for the sole purpose of protecting the Earth. However, Endymion's mission was the protect the Earth from within, while Serenity's mission was to watch over the Earth from the moon, so the two were forbidden to fall in love. However, when they were reborn on Earth, they were freed from that restriction and arguably became that much more powerful for it, since according to Helios, the Silver Crystal and the Golden Crystal draw strength from each other and were always meant to be used together. Usagi then realizes that if the Silver Crystal was in her body, then the Golden Crystal must be inside Mamoru.
Armed with this knowledge, Usagi and Mamoru return to Earth and transform, ready to fight. When Sailor Moon transforms into Eternal Sailor Moon for the final battle with Queen Nepherenia, Mamoru, more determined than ever to help Sailor Moon, forces the Golden Crystal out of his body and his true power is awakened at last. Combining his new power with the Sailor Soldiers, he is able to help Sailor Moon defeat Queen Nepherenia, then Helios appears after being revived by Sailor Chibi Moon. Presenting Mamoru with his own scepter, Helios attaches the Golden Crystal to it and with their full powers realized, Tuxedo Kamen and Sailor Moon transform into King Endymion and Neo Queen Serenity. Then, with their combined power, they completely obliterate the Dead Moon and Queen Nepherenia once and for all.
In the STARS manga, Mamoru is accepted at Harvard University, but is killed by Sailor Galaxia before he can travel to America. After Eternal Sailor Moon becomes one with the Galaxy Cauldron and wishes for her and the others to be brought back to life, she awakens in Mamoru's arms as if it was just a dream. They are married soon after and later, they are seen discussing the future of their child, which would suggest that they had sexual intercourse. However, it's unclear whether Usagi was saying that she thought she was going to be pregnant soon or that she thought she already was.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon
In the live action version, Mamoru is a much more silent, yet dedicated person. He is in search of the Silver Crystal due to his amnesia and dreams that told him that the magical object could restore his memories. To do this, he donned the Tuxedo Kamen disguise and became a thief, searching for the legendary crystal. Once his memories of his past and present lives were restored, he assumed his Endymion form to help the Senshi and tried his best to protect Usagi from the dangerous aspects of overusing the Silver Crystal. However, this went a bit too far when he joined the Dark Kingdom to understand more of the link between the Silver Crystal and Metallia (though he also went to protect not only Usagi, but the Shitennou, who Beryl threatened to kill if he did not join her). Learning that the Silver Crystal made Metallia stronger every time Sailor Moon used it, Endymion took Metallia into his body before succumbing to its dark power. Now an evil parody of himself, Dark Prince Endymion, he almost killed Sailor Mercury when Sailor Moon was forced to kill him to stop Metallia. He was revived once Sailor Moon managed to finally control the Crystal's power and destroyed Metallia for good.

Actors
- In the anime series, Mamoru is played by veteran voice actor Tōru Furuya, also well-known as the voice of Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam, Pegasus Seiya in Saint Seiya, and Mario in the Mario Anime.
- In the English-language dub, Darien is played by Rino Romano (episodes 1-11), Toby Proctor (episodes 12-65) and Vince Corrazza (episodes 66-82, 90-166, and the movies).
- In the Swedish-language dub, Mamoru is played by Fredrik Dolk and Dick Eriksson (episode 34 and 36).
- In the Latin-American Spanish dub, Darien is played by Genaro Vásquez until the second half of R. He was replaced by Gerardo Reyero, in a move that caused a big controversy among the Spanish fans since Reyero's much-deeper baritone voice didn't fit Mamoru's personality at all and made him look and sound much older (and to many, annoying, since Mamoru's actions during that part of the series made him one of the most hated characters of the whole Sailormoon series) than he really was.
- In the musical version, Mamoru has been played by 8 actors: Mizuki Sano (Sano Mizuki), Yuuta Mochizuki (Mochizuki Yuuta), Yuuta Enomoto (Enomoto Yuuta), Hironari Amano (Amano Hironari), Hidemasa Edo (Edo Hidemasa), Kenji Urai (Urai Kenji), Yuu Shirota (Shirota Yuu) and Gyo Miyamoto (Miyamoto Gyo).
- In the live action series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Mamoru is played by Jyouji Shibue; ironically, he'd move from one "Kamen" to another "Kamen" after PGSM as Kamen Rider Ibuki on Kamen Rider Hibiki. Tokusatsu Fans joke that he's "Tuxedo Kamen Rider."
