Description
Universal Thee is a five-piece Indie-slacker-rock band from Edinburgh formed in 2010 consisting of James Russell (vocals & Guitar), Lisa Russell (Vocals), Robin Spivey (Guitar), Andrew Perrie (Bass) and Matt Grieve (Drums). In January 2013 they released their debut single Aranis Natas through the Eventual Heirs label. Following the release of Aranis Natas they released their debut album Back To Earth through the same label. Back To Earth has since gone on to amass nearly 100,000 streams on Spotify. In March 2014 the band completed their first succesful headline tour of Scotland.
Critical Reception
Back To Earth recieved widespread critical acclaim in the UK national press. The Daily Record declared “The debut album from the Edinburgh five-piece jingles and jangles in all the right places. Opening track Bone Collector bounces about with BMX Bandit abandon, while Wolves sounds like a nursery rhyme with bite. A highlight is Aranis Natas, which conjures up the psychedelic freak pop of Clinic.”
The Sunday Herald described the bands sound as "starry-eyed Pixies-meets-Pavement skew-whiff dynamics"
Debut Single Aranis Natas was named in online Irish music publication State Magazine's playlist and album track Million Voices was named in The Skinny's March Playlist. The band were named 'Band of the week' in Fame Magazine and 'UK artist of the Week' on vinyldistrict.co.uk
Numerous blogs and webzines also praised Universal Thee's sound. In December 2013 Emerging Indie Bands blog placed them 17th in an end of year poll naming the best emerging independent artists in the world, reasoning that the band had “found an engaging furrow in which to lay their plough and have developed an extensive catalogue of songs...this is a style of music that has the potential to gain a far wider audience”. The English based alternative music blog Musicmusingsandsuch also tipped them as breakthrough artists “They have an original flair and drive that will see them being adored and adorned on the walls of music fans…their sound has the potential to see them as one of the big names to watch in 2014” and indulge-sound.com opined that the bands sound was “Genius. It’s totally unique”
