Star vs. the Forces of Evil is an American magical girl animated science fiction television comedy-adventure produced by Disney Television Animation.[4] The series previewed on January 18, 2015 on Disney Channel and premiered March 30, 2015 on Disney XD.[1] The first images were shown in the Mercury Filmworks 2014 Demo Reel.[5]
The show was created by Daron Nefcy (CalArts alumni and former storyboard revisionist for Wander Over Yonder and Robot and Monster) who is the second woman to create an animated series for Disney Television Animation (the first being Sue Rose, who created Pepper Ann), and also the first woman to create a Disney XD series.[3]
On February 12, 2015, the series was renewed for a second season.[1]
Plot
After having skirmished with a number of dangerous monsters on her home dimension of Mewni, Star Butterfly is sent to Earth by her parents. She arrives in the town of Echo Creek to live with the Diaz family. However, rather than living a normal life, Star, with Marco Diaz, continues to battle villains throughout the universe and in their high school, mainly to protect her extremely powerful wand, an object that she has still yet to master.
Characters
Main characters
- Princess Star Butterfly (voiced by Eden Sher) - A magical teenage princess from the alternate dimension of Mewni who is sent to Earth to live with the Diaz family after using her family's prized wand to fight various monsters. She is shown as extremely opposite to what princesses should be like, as she fights monsters and gets overexcited. Using the wand, any thing she thinks, it creates, though she still has yet to master it. She isn't quite used to customs on Earth, so Marco helps her.[6]
- Marco Diaz (voiced by Adam McArthur) - The teenage son of the Diaz family. When Star arrives on Earth, she takes Marco on adventures to fight evil villains. Though Marco appoints himself as a "bad boy," he has a heart for good and is willing to protect Star. He is extremely good at karate and loves the adventures Star takes him on.[6]
Supporting characters
- Pony Head (voiced by Jenny Slate) - A floating unicorn head princess from the dimension of Uni who is Star's best friend. She usually gives bad advice to Star, hinting that she is the cause of Star's behavior.
- Mr. Diaz (voiced by Artt Butler) - The father of Marco who likes puppies.
- Mrs. Diaz (voiced by Nia Vardalos) - The mother of Marco. Like her husband, Mrs. Diaz likes puppies.
- Principal Skeeves (voiced by Jeff Bennett) - The principal at Echo Creek Academy.
- Miss Skullnick (voiced by Dee Dee Rescher) - The teacher at Echo Creek Academy who doesn't take her job seriously. She also appears to have a short temper, as she snaps at Marco when he asks if he needs a hall pass to go to the principal's office. Due to a botched attempt at a magic spell from Star's wand in "Match Maker", she currently has the body of a troll.
- Jackie Lynn Thomas (voiced by Grey DeLisle) - A skateboarding girl who Marco has a crush on.
- Brittany Wong (voiced by Minae Noji) - A student at Echo Creek Academy who is the head cheerleader.
- Ferguson and Alfonzo (voiced by Nate Torrence and Matt Chapman) - Friends of Marco and students at Echo Creek Academy who befriends Star.
- Oskar (voiced by Jeff Bennett) - A blonde jock who yells "Star Butterfly Rules!"
- Lars - Lars is the school bully at Echo Creek Academy who enjoys harming others for his amusement. He doesn't like it when others fight back against him.
- King Butterfly (voiced by Alan Tudyk) - The father of Star Butterfly and the ruler of Mewni. He and his wife have Star sent to Earth.
- Queen Butterfly (voiced by Grey DeLisle) - The mother of Star Butterfly. She and her husband have Star sent to Earth. Queen Butterfly previously owned the Royal Magic Wand before it was handed down to Star.
- King Pony Head (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) - The ruler of the Uni dimension and the father of Pony Head.
Villains
- Ludo (voiced by Alan Tudyk) - The primary antagonist of the series. Ludo is a short, dark grayish-green monster with a beak-like mouth. He plans to obtain Star's wand so that he can take over the universe.
- Buff Frog (voiced by Fred Tatasciore in a Russian accent) - Buff Frog is a humanoid frog-like creature that is a member of Ludo's army. He acts as Ludo's spy.
- Tom (voiced by Rider Strong) - A three-eyed horned demon who is Star's ex-boyfriend.
