Sabyasachi Mukharji (June 1, 1927 – September 25, 1990) was the 20th Chief Justice of India, serving from 18 December 1989 until 25 September 1990. He began his legal career in 1949, and was appointed as a Judge of Calcutta High Court in July 1968. In June 1986, he was appointed as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. In March 1983, he was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India, and became Chief Justice of India in December 1989.

Family Background

Sabyasachi Mukharji was the third son of Rai Bahadur Bejoy Bihari Mukharji, first Indian Director General of Land Records, Bengal Presidency. His elder brothers were Justice Prasanta Bihari Mukharji, Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court and the eminent cardiologist, Dr. Aurobindo Bihari Mukharji.[1]

"Education"

He was educated at the Mitra Institution as a child. He graduated in Economics with Honours from the Presidency College, Calcutta in 1946. He was called to the bar by the Society of the Middle Temple.[2] During his student years he was also involved in student politics. In 1945 he was elected General Secretary of the Presidency College Student's Union. [3] Later, while studying for the bar in London he was elected General Secretary of the Indian Socialist Group in 1948-49 as well as becoming a member of the Committee of the Inns of Court Student's Union representing Middle Temple.now he is an actor of bengali cinema, also acted in some bollywood movies like "Khaki" and many other film [4]
