Anita is a common given name for women. The name came from the Hebrew language, Hannah, which means grace or charm. This name was changed into hypocoristic form in Spanish and Portuguese by adding the diminutive suffix -ita.
It is a popular name in Latin countries. This name became popular in Italy in the 19th century after Anita (Anna Maria) Ribeira, the wife of revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. From here it spread into Germany. It is also popular in the English speaking world and other countries in Europe. In Sweden in 2003, there are 61723 people named Anita.
