Breakthrough

In July 2014, Cheatle launched an artist project in order to showcase her production, writing and vocal ability, adopting the moniker 'Zyra'.[1] The following month, she appeared as a guest vocalist on a number of tracks she had written for the Sophomore release from Seattle production duo, Odesza.[2] 'Say My Name' peaked at #2 in the iTunes US electronic charts[3] as an initial single release, while the album, 'In Return' quickly reached the top of the US electronic album chart,[4] peaking at 20 in the main chart. Both 'It's Only' and 'Say My Name were extremely popular online,[5][6] with 'Say My Name' scoring a Hype Machine number #1.[7]

Awards

Cheatle became the youngest person ever to receive a Make It Break It Award in October 2009,[8] winning the UK national songwriting competition The Make It Break It Awards [9] (formerly known as The National Youth Rock and Pop Awards).[10] The judging panel of industry professionals who chose Alex's song 'People Talk About Us' as their winner included; Coldplay's Chris Martin, Record Producer, Steve Levine, BBC Radio 2 Presenter, Mark Radcliffe, Promoter, Harvey Goldsmith, XFM Radio's, Mike Walsh and Marsha Shandur, EMI's Head of Publishing, Guy Moot,[11] HMV's Melanie Armstrong,[12] and singer-songwriter, Dawn Joseph.[13] Cheatle performed at the Award Ceremony (held at the Paul McCartney Auditorium, Liverpool), and recorded two of her songs as part of her prize, at the EMI Music studios, London. Chris Martin of Coldplay is among the competitions alumni winners.[9]
