Mehta began her acting debut with theatre shows in her college, and she started her television career in 2009 with the Zee TV's 12/24 Karol Bagh, which won her the New Talent Award for Best New Actor in Supporting Role—Female. Early life and education

Mehta was born on 6 September 1988[1][2][3] in Chandigarh, Punjab, India,[4] the daughter of Mrs. Aradhana Mehta.[5] She has a younger brother, Pulkit.[6] Her hometown is Delhi, India.[7] As a child, Mehta auditioned for the dance reality show Boogie Woogie, participating as a contestant along with her brother. She danced to "Barbie Girl", a song from the album Aquarium, and her brother performed to "O O Jaane Jaana" from the film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya; they were both rejected.[8] Mehta was educated at the Sacred Heart Convent school in Chandigarh until tenth grade, and she completed eleventh and twelfth grades at the Carmel Convent School.[9] After finishing her education, she moved to Delhi and enrolled in Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, India, for a degree in commerce.[9][10] While at university, she studied acting under the mentorship of its theatre club.[4][9] She then began studying for a Master's degree in Business Management in the United Kingdom, but left to pursue her acting career.[10] Thereafter, she was cast in the television programme 12/24 Karol Bagh. After it ended, she moved to Mumbai, and she lives in Malad West, Mumbai Suburban district, Maharashtra.[4][11]

Mehta's fame increased when she played in the 2011 television series Phulwa and the 2012 Kya Huaa Tera Vaada.[8][12] She established herself as a leading actress, when she appeared the Colors TV drama series Balika Vadhu.[13][14][15]

Mehta began dating her 12/24 Karol Bagh co-star Ravi Dubey.[16] The couple married on 7 December 2013, after Dubey officially proposed to her on the set of the dance reality show Nach Baliye.[17][18] On 5 February 2013, In an interview with IndiaTimes, Mehta said that she and Dubey "always shared a good bond and understanding. But after doing Nach Baliye together we understand each other professionally more."[19] Post her marriage, she added Dubey to her name, making it, Sargun Mehta Dubey.[20]

Mehta faced the media spotlight from a young age. In a 2014 interview with the news portal IndiaTimes, Mehta shares, "I would say getting into TV industry was a cakewalk. I went for the auditions just to try my luck on a light note and got the role. It is after entering that the real challenge begins. It is a major struggle to survive in showbiz.[21]

Career

Acting career

Mehta began her career with theatre shows. During her three years in college in Delhi, she performed in several theatrical productions. Later, she was selected for the supporting role in Zee TV's 2009 television programme 12/24 Karol Bagh. In it, she appeared opposite Ravi Dubey in the role of Neetu Sethi, an effervescent young woman.[22][23] The show tells the story of four children, Simi, Anuj, Neetu and Mili, of the Sethi family, which lives in the middle-class locality of Karol Bagh in Delhi. Neetu is the third sibling out of the four, who is married to the mentally challenged Omi (played by Ravi Dubey).[24][25][26] Mehta subsequently gained considerable notoriety, and her performance in the series won her a New Talent Award for Best New Actress in Supporting Role.[3] In an interview with The Hindu, Mehta said that she gained the role by accident: "My friends and I from the theatre club were asked by one of our professors to audition for the role and I landed Neetu's part".[4]

Following the programme's end, Mehta portrayed the female lead in another Zee TV production, Apno Ke Liye Geeta Ka Dharmayudh.[4] In the show, which first aired in December 2010, she played the role of Geeta, who stands up for truth and saves her family from being ruined because of the misuse of section 498A which aims to protect women from domestic violence and abuse.[27] And on May 2011, The show went off-air after failed to gained popularity.[19][28]

In January 2011, Mehta featured as the female protagonist opposite Ajay Chaudhary in Siddharth Tewary's drama Phulwa on Colors TV, in which she played the title role.[16] The story is loosely based on the life of Phoolan Devi, the dacoit-turned politician.[28] The role brought Mehta increasing notoriety.[8] In a 2013 interview for The Times of India, Mehta said, "when I did Phulwa it became the significant turning point of my career. It was a hit and a critically acclaimed show which gave me recognition and creative satisfaction as well".[19][28]

In July 2011, Mehta featured in an episode of Sony television's crime series Crime Patrol, in which she was cast as Aarti Shekhar.[29]

In 2012, Mehta was chosen to play the pivotal role, a woman named Sonia, opposite Rahil Azam in Fireworks Productions' suspense/thriller series Hum Ne Li Hai... Shapath. The story revolved around a murder that took place at a rave party.[30]

Mehta featured opposite Karan Patel on Shontara Productions' Teri Meri Love Stories Star Plus network anthology series, in which she guest-starred as Anika in August 2012.[31][32]

At the end of October 2012, Mehta was approached for the role of Aradhya in Shashi Mittal's show Dil Ki Nazar Se Khoobsurat, but she was removed from the show due to conceptual changes.[33]

Ekta Kapoor's soap opera Kya Huaa Tera Vaada was Mehta's next show. In it, she played an independent girl character after a ten-year leap in the show's storyline. Co-starring alongside Mohit Malhotra, Mona Singh, Mouli Ganguly, and Neelam Sivia, she was cast as grown-up Bulbul, a journalist. She began shooting on 5 December and was telecast in mid-December 2012. She said, "My character has different shades. I haven't done this kind of role before. Bulbul is a modern girl, whose focus is on her career".[28][34] The show went off air near the end of May 2013.[35]

After playing strong, independent characters in 12/24 Karol Bagh (2009), Phulwa (2011) and Kya Huaa Tera Vaada (2012), Sphere Origins productions approached her for the docile girl character in Colors television's drama series Balika Vadhu. She began shooting for the show, in which she plated the parallel lead role of Ganga, on 1 November 2013.[36] In an interview with Hindustan Times, Mehta said that she was surprised when she [was] approached for the role: "I never saw myself in such a role, I was wondering if I'd be able to pull it off".[15] Her performance received a nomination for the Indian Television Academy Award for GR8! Performer — Female. A year later, in mid-november 2014, she quit the show due to creative dissatisfaction.[37]

After a long break in fiction shows, Mehta make a comeback in fiction shows with the Zee TV's mini series Rishton Ka Mela, she began shoot for the show on 16 april 2015, In it, she played the central character Deepika, who is a young beautiful girl of today's modern era. the show has features ten episodes, in which she featured alongside an ensemble cast including Eijaz Khan, Usha Nadkarni, Ratan Rajput, Anupam Shyam, Karan Mehra, Hiten Tejwani, Gauri Pradhan Tejwani, Sayantani Ghosh and Karan Grover. She said: "I haven't attempted a finite fiction series like this before. Besides the show brings back some of Zee's most iconic faces under one roof. These were the key factors that led me to taking on the show." The show follows the journey of the Deepika, who is a runaway bride, escaping from her cruel police inspector fiance (played by Eijaz Khan). Deepika runs into a mela where she meets interesting women, each with a story of her own.[38][39][40][41] Mehta described about her role: "My character Deepika is a runaway bride. How she comes in touch with some strong women and joins forces with them and saves the traditional mela forms the crux of the story. Deepika's own love story, in the process, reaches an interesting culmination."[38] The show went off air on 8 May 2015.[42]

Other work and appearances

On 28 March 2012, Mehta attended the launch party of the UTV Stars TV show Walk Of The Stars, along with Ravi Dubey, at Olive in Mumbai,[43] and on May 2012, Mehta attended a Prestigious Television Awards function where she was nominated and announced as the winner. Commenting on the award, she said, "I was excited, thrilled at being nominated at this prestigious television awards."[44]

In mid-October 2012, Mehta participated in Sony Entertainment Television's reality-based Comedy Circus series titled Comedy Circus Ke Ajoobe, along with Kapil Sharma. Referencing her work in the series, she said, "I am doing comedy for the first time, It's quite challenging".[45] On January 2013, she quit the show due to her busy schedule involving multiple other programmes.[46]

In December 2012, Mehta participated in the fifth season of Star Plus' celebrity couple dance reality show Nach Baliye. She was joined by Ravi Dubey, and on a 23 March 2013 finale episode,[47] she was announced as the first runner-up of show.[36] She said, "Competition is crazy. It drives you crazy. Every time you have to be better than your last performance. The pressure is surely too much to handle".[19] In addition, she participated in another version of show, entitled Nach Baliye Shriman v/s Shrimati, in which the couples competed against each other. The mini-series began in April 2013, and Mehta competed against Dubey.[48]

In 2013, Mehta appeared at film music launch party of Issaq at Mumbai, India, along with Dubey on 18 June 2013.[49]

In July 2013, Mehta gave a special dance performance on the reality show India's Dancing Superstar, performing a robotic dance, along with the contestant Amardeep Singh Natt.[50]

In August 2013, Mehta attended the launch party of Bindass' romantic drama programme Yeh Hai Aashiqui in Mumbai, India.[51] On September 2013, she attended the South Africa India Film and Television Awards - SAIFTA award function in Durban, South Africa,[52] and in December 2013, Mehta made a special appearance in the sixth season of Nach Baliye, along with Dubey. The couple performed a romantic song, "Tere Haath Mein Mera Haath Ho", from the movie Fanaa.[53]

By the end of 2013, Mehta had landed the hosting spot for the special children's season of Sony Entertainment Television's dance reality show Boogie Woogie. Commenting on taking the position, she said "I have hosted few red carpet events, but Boogie Woogie will be my first outing as a host on television".[8]

In January 2014, Mehta featured in the print campaign for the 2014 GR8! TV Magazine's 15th calendar edition, GR8! Love Stories Calendar, which featured twelve real life television couples. She appeared along with her husband, Dubey. The first edition of the calendar was shot by the fashion photographer Pravin Talan, and it was launched by Anu Ranjan and Shashi Ranjan, founders of GR8 Entertainment Ltd., at a Gala event on 6 January 2014.[54][55][56]

In mid-February 2014, Mehta appeared as a guest along with Siddharth Shukla, Ravi Dubey and Karan Wahi on Colors Television's comedy/talk show Comedy Nights with Kapil, performing in a special episode of Pinky Bua's (Upasana Singh) wedding.[57]

Mehta attended Star Plus's Holi festival special titled Masti Gulal Ki, along with Dubey on March 2014. The Holi special episode of the show was telecast on Holi festival day 16 March.[58]

In June 2014, Mehta gave a special dance performance during Zee TV's award function, Zee Gold Awards, in which she performed various songs from Bollywood films, including "Drama Queen" and "Tooh Tooh" from the movies Hasee Toh Phasee and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, respectively.[59][60] In August of that year, she attended the launch event of Sony television's new Hindi entertainment channel Sony Pal. She presented a unique act to salute the spirit of womanhood in the event Yeh Pal Hamara Hai.[61]

Mehta gave a special dance appearance on the grand premiere of the Indian reality show Bigg Boss 8 on 21 September 2014, along with Gautam Gulati and Sukirti Kandpal.[62] Later, on 18 October 2014, she appeared as a special panel member on the show.[63]

On October 2014, Mehta gave a special dance performance in Zee television's drama series, Jamai Raja, performing various Bollywood songs, including "Dola Re Dola" and "Ramleela" from the movies Devdas and Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela, respectively.[64]

On 30 November 2014, she appeared at an award function of Zee TV's Zee Rishtey Awards,[23] and on January 2015, Mehta attended the television stars cricket league of Sony television's Box Cricket League. She attended the semi-final match of the Delhi Dragons and the Ahmedabad Express, supporting their friends of the Ahmedabad Express team.[65]

On 18 February 2015, Mehta started to shoot for an episode of Colors TV's cookery/talk show Farah Ki Dawat, on which she appeared as a guest in its first episode along with actor Abhishek Bachchan. The show was hosted by filmmaker Farah Khan, and its first episode was telecast on 22 February 2015.[66][67][68]

In mid-March 2015, Mehta starred with Rashami Desai and Sugandha Mishra in the special Bittu's (Kapil Sharma) wedding episode of Comedy Nights with Kapil, in which she played the role of the sister of Manju (Sumona Chakravarti). The special episode was telecast on Colors TV and aired in mid-March 2015.[69][70]
