I haven't been able to find any information pertaining to mucoadhesives as lubricating or protective agents. On the contrary, the only extensive articles I could find related to the these functions were about the potentially detrimental effect that mucoadhesive drug-delivery systems have on existing mucous membranes. Because of this, I will focus primarily on the different routes of local and systemic administration using mucoadhesives. Let me know if there are any objections to this.
