Pangako Sa ’Yo (lit. This I Promise You) is a primetime soap opera series produced and broadcast by the Philippine media network ABS-CBN. It is dubbed the first "teleserye" on Philippine television. It starred Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales. The soap, which ran from 2000 to 2002, spanned 476 episodes at 30 minutes each. The series re-aired on ABS-CBN at evening from 2006 to 2007 and on its affiliate TFC. A rerun was aired from March - August 2011 on ABS-CBN, in the late evening timeslot (1:30 A.M. - 3:30 A.M.) every day, with an alternate ending. The series re-aired again in the cable channel Jeepney TV last October 2012. The show posted an all time high rating of 64.9% during its September 2002 series finale, posting the country's second highest rating for any episode by a TV series next to Esperanza, and the highest rated finale episode for any Filipino TV series.

It serves as one of the influential primetime dramas or Philippine soap operas ever made as it appealed to many audiences in foreign languages. It is popular to many Filipino viewers because of its love triangles between the main characters and the endless love between Amor and Eduardo, Yna and Angelo, and Claudia and Simon. The finale had a power outage as fans rushed home to watch the 1 hour finale and then re-aired at 10:00 PM – 11:15 PM in 2002 and also reaired the finale again on a Saturday at 8:00 PM – 9:01 PM (Philippine Time) which engulfed Filipino viewers as they waited for the powerful moments. It again abruptly was shown on ABS-CBN'S morning timeslot back in 2003-2004 and Pinoy Central internationally as well.

Plot

The story starts with the love story of Amor (Eula Valdez) and Eduardo (Tonton Gutierrez). Eduardo's mother, Benita, opposes the relationship since Amor was a maid and because she wanted Eduardo to marry Claudia (Jean Garcia) for political reasons. Eduardo's brother, Diego (Jestoni Alarcon), who has a crush on Amor, was asked by Benita to separate them. Eduardo, on seeing Diego trying to rape Amor, mistook it as them having a relationship, and is heartbroken and decides to marry Claudia. Amor, now pregnant, is forced to leave the Buenavista hacienda and went back to her mother at a trash dump. She vows to have her revenge on the Buenavista family when she finds out that Eduardo has married Claudia.

After giving birth to a girl named Maria Amor (who turned out to be Yna) (Kristine Hermosa), Amor and her friend Lourdes (Amy Austria) survived by working in clubs. Amor caught the eye of a rich American named James Powers who brings her to the U.S.A. She leaves her child and mother named Chayong at the dump and sends money to them from time to time.

The American was abusive to Amor. When a landslide hit the dump site, making Amor think that her mother and daughter had died, he did not allow her to go back to the Philippines. She got revenge by not getting the medical help he needed when he suffered a stroke. He died and she inherits all his money.

Eduardo and Claudia had two children: Angelo (Jericho Rosales) and Lia (Jodi Sta. Maria). Eduardo is the governor of Punta Verde while Claudia has become the ever-elusive Gambling Queen. Angelo is a rebel who dislikes his father while Lia is the sweet, church-attending teen whose feelings everyone wants to protect.

Amor's daughter survives the landslide and is adopted by Isko and Belen Macaspac. They already had a son named Caloy, who hated Yna. The couple found drawings Eduardo made for Amor, signed "Ynamorata" near the abandoned child, so they decided to call the little girl they found Ynamorata. Isko and Belen soon had another child, Flerida.

Benita Buenavista regretted forcing Eduardo to marry Claudia as her daughter-in-law turned out to be a bad lady. She tried to explain on her deathbed that she was the one who broke his relationship with Amor but died before explaining. She then haunted the dreams of the grown Yna to make up for her sins.

By accident, Yna and Eduardo meet and Yna dreams Benita showing her that her past lies in the Buenavista family. Intrigued, she gets a job working as a maid for the family in hopes of finding out about her past.

Yna and Angelo fall in love, much to the chagrin of Claudia. She looks down on maids and makes Yna's life a living hell.

Amor, coming back from the US as Amor Powers, has made a name for herself in the business world, all the while planning her revenge on the Buenavista family, whom she blamed for the sufferings she endured before as well as the assumed death of her child. One of the most-awaited parts is the revelation to Amor that Yna is her long lost daughter.

The dilemma is that, after finding out that Yna's true father is Eduardo, Angelo and Yna are therefore half-siblings. It is later revealed that Angelo's true dad is not Eduardo. It is at first thought to be Simon (who was a poor lover of Claudia), but it is later revealed to be Diego's with a poor woman named Thelma who died (actually Diego is not a Buenavista, he's adopted).

It turns out that Claudia gave birth to a daughter with Simon; Claudia's father later switched the babies because of the demand of Dona Benita that a boy will inherit all her riches. (The boy that replaced the daughter was revealed to be Angelo in the near ending) The daughter's name was Maria Amor, who was raised by an old woman named Puring and had her believing she was Amor's daughter (but her real name was revealed to be Clarissa) and was later briefly mistaken to be Amor and Eduardo's daughter by everyone, including Claudia. To seek revenge on Amor, Claudia kills Maria Amor. She later finds out who Maria Amor really is and is deeply crushed. When she reconciles with everyone at Yna and Angelo's wedding, she sees her daughter's spirit and begs forgiveness. At prison, she inherits her daughter's ashes.

The end of the series sees everyone happy and reunited with their true loves. Yna marries Angelo, Claudia marries Simon, and Amor and Eduardo decided to live happily ever after at last.

In the end, she's not a biological mother of Angelo and she's reveals her true biological daughter with Simon named Clarissa (also known as Maria Amor).

• Jestoni Alarcon as Diego Buenavista - The eldest son of the Buenavistas. Although the first-born, he always tries to win his mother's heart but is constantly rejected. He lives a life full of envy and deep hatred for his brother Eduardo who always gets the best of everything, including the love of Amor. In the end, he's the biological father of Angelo from Thelma before he married Lourdes.
• Amy Austria as Lourdes Magbanua Buenavista - Rescued by Diego from the wayward life, Lourdes' predicament became even worse as they both try to survive a life of poverty after Diego moved out of the Buenavista hacienda. She is a currently 2015 remake role as Belen Macaspac.

International releases

Pangako Sa ’Yo (known internationally as The Promise) was a successful hit in China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore. Outside Asia, it was also shown in Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon, Tanzania, Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Uganda, making African audiences instant fans of Hermosa and Rosales.

Its highest rating in Indonesia was 50.8%, beating the highest rating of Full House which was 50.5%. It was the opening and hit TV series on Bukedde TV 1 in Kampala, Uganda and people would leave their work with one word on their lips "Yna", the lead character of the show.

It became a hit in China’s national television and rated second over all local and foreign programs airing. The series even hit the Top 30 list in China’s national weekly rankings, covering over 2,000 channels and capturing 1.3 billion viewers. In Zambia, a newspaper article said that: "The series has become a topic of discussion among families, friends and even neighbors who daily ponder on how the show would end." While a TV commentator in Africa said: "‘When is Pangako Sa ’Yo coming back?’ I wish I could get a dollar each time I get that question. From teenager to grandma, from household organizers to tax consultant—it gripped people across all genders." Journalism professor and entertainment editor Nestor G. Cuartero said Pangako Sa ’Yo paved the way for more Filipino programs to make it in international markets.

After its top-rating broadcast on local television, Pangako Sa ’Yo was aired on ABS-CBN’s international TV network The Filipino Channel (TFC) in 2007. Reruns of the show are currently being shown in North America via Cinema One Global, an international TV channel affiliate of TFC.

Cambodian adaptation

The Philippines most successfully distributed canned TV series worldwide, Pangako Sa ’Yo ("The Promise"), has been localized in Cambodia after Cambodian Television Network (CTN) bought its format from ABS-CBN, the Philippines' leading and largest multimedia conglomerate.

Cambodia's The Promise (Khmer:សន្យាស្នេហ៍) was aired on 2013 with 198 episodes. Based on a gripping story from the Philippines about power, corruption and love, the scenario has been adapted to suit the Cambodia cultural context and audience sensitivities. The Promise was broadcast peak-time on CTN, Cambodian's most popular TV channel, running three shows a week until July 2014.

Reruns

On August 14, 2006, Pangako Sa ’Yo had a rerun on ABS-CBN and on the The Filipino Channel until December 2007. Reruns are currently shown on Cinema One Global an international affiliate of TFC starting October 17, 2011 to January 2012. A less successful rerun was aired from March to August 2011 on ABS-CBN, in the late evening timeslot (1:30 A.M. - 3:30 A.M.) every day, with an alternate ending. It re-aired again on Jeepney TV on Sky Cable Channel 69 (now moved to Sky Cable Channel 9 in April 2013).

In Malaysia, through local satellite TV channel, ASTRO Bella, starting November 22, will air Pangako Sa ’Yo because of high demand. It airs in Tagalog with Bahasa Melayu subtitles. Airs Monday to Friday at 11:00am with encore on the same day and also on weekends with marathon. In Singapore through local satellite TV Channel from Malaysia, Astro Prima on mio TV Channel 602 starting 10 April 2013, will air Pangako Sa ’Yo because of high demand in Singapore due to this series was first shown on MediaCorp Suria in 2007. It airs in Tagalog with Bahasa Melayu subtitles. Airs Monday to Friday at 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM with encore on the same day at 10:00 AM and also on 12 midnight on same day.

Remake

Pangako Sa'Yo was aired last May 25, 2015. The remake is feature by the tandem of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. Bernardo is playing the role of Yna Macaspac which was originally portrayed by Kristine Hermosa while Padilla is playing the role of Angelo Buenavista which was originally portrayed by Jericho Rosales. Jodi Sta. Maria who originally played the role of Lia Buenavista is also part of the remake but this time she will play the role of Amor Powers originally portrayed by Eula Valdez while Angelica Panganiban is portraying the role of Claudia Buenavista which was portrayed by Jean Garcia in the original. Rory Quintos, who also directed the original series will also direct the remake while Star Creatives, the team behind the successful series' Princess and I, Got to Believe, The Legal Wife and Forevermore will be the one in-charge to produce the remake.
