- 1332 - Emperor Godaigo is exiled to Oki Island. (Traditional Japanese Date: Seventh Day of the Third Month, 1332)
- 1908 - Kitasato Shibasaburō and Shiga Kiyoshi form a Cancer Research Society.
- 1922 - Newspapers venture into the weekly magazine business with the launch of the Weekly Asahi and the Sunday Mainichi.
- 1932 - Construction of Ueno Station is completed.
- 1950 - Yoshikawa Eiji begins publishing his revision of The Tale of the Heike in the Weekly Asahi.
- 1951 - Five hundred yen paper bills make their first appearance featuring Iwakura Tomomi.
- 1954 - Famed Austrian conductor Herbert Von Karajan comes to Japan.
- 1993 - The Fukuoka Dome, Japan's first stadium with an open and close roof, opens. It was built at a cost of 76 billion yen and was the home of the Daiei Hawks (now the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks) professional baseball team.
