The fourteenth season of Degrassi premiered on October 28, 2014.[2] Degrassi, previously known as Degrassi: The Next Generation, is a Canadian serial teen drama television series. Although only four school years have passed in the story timeline since season six, season fourteen is set during the last few weeks of the school year and the following summer in the years it aired. Writers have been able to use a semi-floating timeline, so that the issues depicted are modern for their viewers. This season again depicts the lives of a group of high school freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors and a college freshman as they deal with some of the challenges and issues that young adults face such as teenage pregnancy, sexism, sexual identity, drug abuse, sexting, and child abuse.
The fourteenth season was announced on November 13, 2013.[3] However, MTV Canada and TeenNick did not announce picking up the season until a month before the first episode was scheduled to air.[4] Filming for the season commenced on April 11, 2014 at Epitome Studios in Toronto. Filming continued into August, with a break before filming the final four episodes of the season in order to give Epitome the opportunity to start filming episodes for the first season of their new series. Filming for this season completed on October 6, 2014. On June 4, 2015, it was announced that Degrassi would no longer air on TeenNick or MTV Canada following the fourteenth season.[5] However on June 9, 2015, it was announced that Family Channel and Netflix had picked up the series and will air 20 new episodes in 2016 renaming the show Degrassi: Next Class.[6]
