Girl's Day (Korean: 걸스데이) is a four-member South Korean girl group under the management of Dream Tea Entertainment, a subsidiary of KOSDAQ-listed agency Wellmade Star M. The group consists of four girls who perform under the stage names of Sojin, Minah, Yura and Hyeri. Their biggest hits include "Something", "Twinkle Twinkle", "Expectation", "Female President" and "Darling".
Career
Pre-debut
Dream Tea started Girl's Day promotions before their debut with the creation of an official blog, YouTube channel, and Twitter accounts for the group and each member. A forum made by fans was also recognized by the company as their official international forum. The group also had dance flash mobs before their debut at the commercial and entertainment districts of Seoul, gaining interest of the public.[1]
2010: Debut, line-up change, "Nothing Lasts Forever"
On July 7, the group released their first music video for the song "Tilt My Head". Two days later their debut mini-album. Girl's Day Party 1, was also released. On September 12, only two months after their debut, it was announced that members Ji Sun and Ji In had left the group to pursue their respective interests; Yura and Hyeri would be added to the group.[2] On October 29, the new line-up released their first digital single album, Girl's Day Party 2, which includes the lead track, "Nothing Lasts Forever" (잘해줘봐야 Jalhaejwo Bwaya).
In December 2010, Girl's Day had their first TV show alongside boy band U-KISS. The show, We Are Dating, is a spinoff of the hit TV show We Got Married, paired three members of each group for the first season.[3]
2011: "Twinkle Twinkle", Everyday, "Don't Flirt"
The single "Twinkle Twinkle" (반짝반짝 Banjjak Banjjak) was released on March 16, 2011.[4] On May 17, Girl's Day had their first overseas concert in Taiwan with U-KISS and Super Junior M. The concert, I Love You Taiwan - We are friends Concert (사랑해(莎朗嘿) 台灣! We are friends 演唱會), was held by Korea Tourism Organization Taipei, Taiwan Office in Taipei International Convention Center.
Girl's Day's second mini-album, Everyday, was released on July 7. Besides the title track, "Hug Me Once" (한번만 안아줘 Hanbeonman Anajwo), the album also contained the song called "Young Love", and the group's previous digital singles,"Nothing Lasts Forever" and "Twinkle Twinkle". This was the first time members Yura and Hyeri were featured in a physically released album as both of them had only participated on digital singles prior to this release. On the album's cover photo, the members were dressed in wedding dresses, which is the album's concept.[5] The music video for "Hug Me Once" was produced by Metaoloz and featured an interactive game experience.[6][7] The promotions for "Hug Me Once" started on July 8 on KBS's show Music Bank, and ended on August 6 on the show Music Core.[8]
In September, the group released a single album titled Girls' Day Party #4 with "Don't Flirt" (너, 한눈 팔지마! Neo, Hannun Paljima!) as the title track.[9] "Don't Flirt" was written and produced by Gang Jeon Hyong and Nam Kisang, the same producers of the songs "Twinkle Twinkle" and "Hug Me Once".
2012: Everyday 2, Jihae's withdrawal, "Don't Forget Me"
Girl's Day released their third mini album, Everyday 2, on April 17, 2012. It included the title track "Oh! My God", "Don't Flirt", "Two of Us" (둘이서 Duriseo), and "Telepathy",[10] the latter written and produced by Sojin. The promotions for "Oh! My God" started on April 19, on Mnet's M! Countdown.
On October 17, Dream Tea revealed that Jihae had left the group due to personal reasons.[11] The remaining four members of Girl's Day made their comeback on October 26 with the song "Don't Forget Me" from their fifth digital single, Girl's Day Party #5. The music video for the song featured a drama-like story featuring member Hyeri.[12] On this same day, Girl's Day made their first performance of the song on Music Bank.[13]
2013: Expectation, Female President
Girl's Day released the single "White Day" on February 20.[14] On March 14, the album Expectation was released, coinciding with White Day. The music video of the title track, also titled "Expectation", stars member Yura. The song proved to be a commercial success and was awarded the Long-Run Song Award at the 3rd Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards.[15] Girl's day re-released Expectation with "Female President" as the second title track on June 24. On July 7, the group won first place on a music program for the first time since their debut. However, due to the postponement of the broadcast to respect the loss of lives from the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash, they did not had a chance to receive the trophy.[16] "Female President" was also named one of the top 20 K-pop songs of 2013 by Billboard Korea.[17]
On October 10, Girl's Day released the song "Let's Go", written and composed by Sojin, to encourage young adults to work hard for their upcoming final exams.
2014: Everyday 3, Everyday 4, I Miss You
On January 3, 2014, the group's third mini-album, Everyday 3, was released. The album includes the songs "G.D.P" (Intro), "Something", "Whistle" (휘파람), and "Show You", all written and produced by Duble Sidekick. The music video for the title track, "Something", reached one million views within a day. "Something" became their highest-charting single, peaking at number 2 on Billboard's Korea K-Pop Hot 100 and the Gaon Digital Chart. It also ranked number 1 on the monthly Gaon Digital Chart (January 1–31) and stayed in the top 10 of the K-Pop Hot 100 for 8 weeks. Promotion for "Something" started on January 3, on KBS's Music Bank,[18] and the song went on to win five music program awards. Later in 2014, "Something" won Best Dance Performance by a Female Group at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.
In July, the single "Darling" was released with the album Everyday 4, again produced by Duble Sidekick. The album also includes the songs "Summer Party" (Intro), "Look At Me", and "Timing". On October 15, Girl's Day released a ballad, "I Miss You", together with its smart card-type music album.[19][20] On November 26, Girl's Day released the compilation album, Best Album, in Japan.
2015–present: Hello Bubble, Ring My Bell
On May 12, 2015, Girl's Day released the project single "Hello Bubble" in collaboration with Mise-en-scène, the hair care brand that they are endorsing.[21]
Girl's Day released their second full album Love, along with its title track "Ring My Bell", on July 6, 2015.[22][23][24]
