I am a professor of music at New College of Florida, a small, public liberal arts college in Sarasota. I have a PhD in musicology from the University of Pennsylvania, my dissertation on dance at the Paris Opéra between 1830 and 1850. Recently I have begun work on topics in American music, including women whistlers. I have constructed an assignment in a writing enhanced course that I teach, "Music and the Environment," in which I ask students to analyze an article, contribute to an article, and then revise another student's article in the class.
