Sheena Bora (born Sheena Das-Bora) was an executive working for Mumbai Metro One based in Mumbai.[2] She was daughter of media executive Indrani Mukerjea and Siddhartha Das, a Kolkata based executive (Siddhartha Das claimed during an interview that he is Sheena and Mekhail Bora's biological father. He also said that he was not married to Indrani and that the two children were born out of wedlock).[1] Sheena Bora's brother was Mekhail Bora. Sheena was reportedly dating and was in cohabitation with Rahul Mukerjea who also happened to be her step-brother (son of Peter Mukerjea). Sheena went missing on 24 Apr 2012 and was never found again. In Aug 2015 Mumbai Police arrested her mother Indrani Mukerjea, her stepfather Sanjeev Khanna and her mother's driver Shyamvar Pinturam Rai (Shyam Rai) for allegedly abducting Sheena Bora, killing her and burning her dead-body.[3][4][5][6][7] Whilst Rai and Khanna have confessed to the crime, Indrani has maintained that Sheena Bora is alive and is in USA.[8]

Early life, family history and disappearance

Sheena Bora was born to Indrani Mukerjea and Siddhartha Das (fatherhood disputed) in 1987 in Kolkata, West Bengal. Indrani and Siddhartha Das were not married (were in cohabitation) and the two children were were born out of wedlock.[1] Till 2002 (Eighth grade), Sheena Bora used her birth name (Sheena Das-Bora). In 1989, Sheena's mother Indrani Mukerjea split up with her (then) partner, made a trip to Guwahati and left both her children (Sheena and Mekhail) with her parents Upendra Kumar Bora and Durga Rani. Sheena and her brother were subsequently raised by their maternal grandparents in Guwahati.

It was also "speculated" that Mikhail's biological father is a Kolkata based Bengali businessman. Allegedly Indrani was in cohabitation with this anonymous businessman around 1990 when Mekhail Bora was born. Duo later split up before Indrani got married Sanjeev Khanna.[9]

Indrani Mukerjea got married the second (or third) time to Sanjeev Khanna and the couple had a daughter Vidhie Khanna from the marriage. In 2002, Indrani and Sanjeev Khanna too split up and fought a bitter custody battle for Vidhie Khanna. Indrani Mukerjea won the custody battle and shifted Vidhie to the United Kingdom. In 2002, after Indrani and Peter Mukerjea's marriage, Vidhie was legally adopted by Peter. In the same year, Sheena's family got hers and her brother's surname changed to only "Bora".[3][10]

Sheena Bora moved to Mumbai in 2006 and was introduced by Indrani to everyone (including Peter) as her younger sister. Indrani Mukerjea concealed the fact from everyone that Sheena and Mekhail Bora were her own children and instead told everyone that they both were her siblings.[11][12] Peter Mukerjea helped Sheena Bora to get admission in St. Xavier's College from where Sheena obtained Bachelor of Arts degree (2006-2009). In 2009, she joined Reliance Infrastructure as a management trainee. In June 2011 Sheena joined Mumbai Metro One as an assistant manager.[13][14][15]

During her initial days in Mumbai, she got introduced to Rahul Mukerjea (her step-brother and son of Peter Mukerjea) and the duo had romantic relationship leading to cohabitation from 2009 to 2012. Allegedly, Indrani did not approve of the relationship. On 24 Apr 2012, Sheena took leave of absence and while she was on leave, she "sent in her written resignation".[15] On the same day, Rahul Mukerjea received a breakup SMS from Sheena's phone.[16] Her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, claimed that Sheena had gone to the United States for higher studies and hence a missing First Information Report was never filed.[4][17][18] Sheena was never seen after 24 Apr 2012.

Theories: Sheena Bora’s biological father.
  1. Siddhartha Das: Most common theory is that Siddhartha Dass is the biological father of Sheena and Mekhail Bora (also claimed by Das).[1]
  2. Unnamed person: Reportedly, Indrani was married to an unknown person before getting married to Siddhartha Das and both Sheena and Mekhail are children from that marriage.[19]
  3. Upendra Kumar Bora: The Daily Telegraph reported that Indrani was raped by her father (Upendra) resulting-in her pregnancy and birth of Sheena Bora.[20]

Killing and aftermath

The driver of Indrani Mukerjea, Shyamvar Pinturam Rai gave a statement to the police that the murder was planned by Indrani Mukerjea who in turn had discussed the plan with her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna. Allegedly Indrani had done a recce of the dumping ground an evening before the murder. On 24 Apr 2012, Sanjeev Khanna flew down to Mumbai and checked in Hotel Hilltop at Worli. Indrani had rented Opel Corsa for the abduction, killing and for disposing off the body. Indrani had earlier asked Sheena to meet her on the evening of 24 Apr 2012. Although Sheena was reluctant, she still agreed to meet Indrani .

On the evening of 24 Apr 2012 (around 18:00 hours), Indrani picked up her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna from his hotel in Worli. Sheena was dropped off by Rahul Mukerjea near National College on Linking Road in Bandra around 1900 hours where she was met by Indrani, Sanjeev and driver Shyamvar Rai. The car was being driven by Rai with Indrani sitting next to him. Sheena sat in the rear seat with Sanjeev Khanna. Sheena was taken in to one of the by-lanes in Bandra where Sanjeev Khanna strangulated Sheena. After the murder, Sheena's body was taken to Indrani's house on Worli where the body was put in a bag and stuffed in the boot of the car. Sanjeev Khanna later left for his hotel whilst Indrani stayed home and Rai slept inside the car with the body in the boot of the car.

The same night (early morning of 25 Apr 2012), all three accused drove to village Gagode in Pen tehsil, Raigad with Sheena (dead-body) propped between them in the rear seat to make it look like Sheena was sleeping. The accused wanted to avoid police checks on the highway and hence they propped the dead-body between them rather than putting it in the boot of the car. At 4:00 am on 25 Apr 12, the accused dragged the dead body out of the car in an isolated spot in the forest, stuffed it in the bag, poured petrol over the bag and set it ablaze. After the body was completely burnt, the accused returned to Mumbai and Khanna later that day left Mumbai.[4][7][21][22]

On 23 May 2012, local Police officials found a decomposed body on the crime spot after villagers complained of foul odor. The police was unable to identify the dead-body (skeletal remains) and sent the recovered skeletal remains to JJ Hospital in Mumbai. The police also did not register a First Information Report or initiate an investigation.[23] The disappearance and murder of Sheena Bora remained under wraps till Aug 2015.

Rahul Mukerjea's attempt to file FIR

In Apr 2012, Rahul Mukerjea after Sheena's disappearance approached the Worli police to file a missing person's complaint but the case was not registered. Worli police advised Rahul since the couple (Sheena and Rahul) were a domicile of Andheri (which was out of Worli police's jurisdiction), the case needed to be registered with Andheri police station. Rahul approached MIDC (Andheri) police station, but the case was not registered there too. Rahul also confronted Indrani for whereabouts of Sheena and was advised by her that Sheena has shifted to USA and that she (Sheena) did not want to be in a relationship with him. Rahul further questioned Indrani how Sheena could have travelled to the USA since her passport was in his custody to which Indrani told him that they got "another passport" made for Sheena. Rahul subsequently moved to Dehradun to live with his biological mother Shabnam.[16][18]

Obstruction attempts by Indrani to file FIR

After Sheena's disappearance in Apr 2012, repeated attempts were made by Rahul Mukerjea and Mekhail Bora to file a missing person's complaint. On Rahul's insistence, Police visited Indrani's Worli residence where they were informed by the staff that Indrani was out of India. Upon her return, Indrani Mukerjea visited Worli police station and informed the police that Rahul was trying to stalk Sheena and that's was why Sheena shifted to USA without informing him.[24]

Unfolding of the murder case

Sheena Bora disappearance, murder and disposal of her dead body went unreported for 40 months till Aug 2015 and the skeletal remains found in Pen tehsil, Raigad were not linked with Sheena Bora's case. For four months, preceding the arrests, Mumbai Police had kept Indrani Mukerjea under surveillance. The surveillance was initiated after a tip-off from an informant (that Indrani was involved in the disappearance of "her sister"). However, the arrests could only be made after Shyam Rai, the driver of Indrani Mukerjea was arrested in an unrelated case of possession of illegal arms. Rai was arrested on 21 Aug 2015 and during his interrogation he reveled details about Sheena Bora's murder and related incidents.[25][26] Upon his arrest, Rai narrated the entire murder incident to the police including the fact that he was paid 1 lakh (equivalent to 1.5 lakh or US$1,766.10 in 2023) for the job. Initially it was reported that Indrani was responsible for the disappearance and murder of her "sister" Sheena Bora. It was only the next day (26 Aug 15) was it reveled by Mekhail Bora that Sheena was Indrani's daughter and not sister.[27][28]

On August 25, 2015 Mumbai Police arrested Indrani Mukerjea.[32] She was charged under sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 34 (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. She was produced before the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate court, which remanded her in police custody till August 31, 2015.[33][34]

On August 26, 2015 Indrani’s ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna was arrested in Kolkata and charged under sections 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 120-B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Besides the above he will also be charged under section 307(attempt to murder) for plotting the murder of Mekhail as well (who managed to escape after having been given a drink spiked with a sedative). On August 28, 2015 he was remanded in Mumbai police custody till August 31, 2015.[35]

Policy custody of Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna, Shyam Rai extended to 5 September After arguments by Indrani Mukerjea's lawyers and the Mumbai police, the Mumbai court has extented the police custody of Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna and Shyam Rai to 5 September.
