Amoud University Amoud University is a public university located in the city of Amoud, Borama in the northwestern of Somalia.[1]

Overview

Following the outbreak of the civil war in Somalia in the early 1990s, a group of professionals and expatriates from the Awdal region began discussions in 1996 on the possibility of creating an institute of higher learning in the area. This culminated in the establishment of Amoud University (AU) in 1997, one of the country's first post-conflict tertiary institutions.

The university is registered as a non-governmental, non-profit making institution. It is deeply rooted in the local community, as the primary support for the college's foundation came from the community elders, leaders, business people, concerned citizens and local non-governmental organizations.

AU originally began with 66 students in two faculties, Education and Business Administration, with 3 staff professors. The university currently has a student population of 5000 enrolled in 13 faculties, including in Medicine and Surgery. It also counts 230 teachers and a large library with up-to-date books. The first batch of medical graduates concluded their studies in June 2007. Their final exams were supervised by the King's College London medical school, which provides curriculum and teaching assistance to AU's medical faculty.

In 2003, Amoud University signed a project agreement with the EC[disambiguation needed]/DANIDA/CfBT for teacher training in the Education department. The two-year Diploma Education Program is funded by EC and DANIDA through UNESCO and CfBT.

Mission

Amoud University aspires to be a paragon of excellence in education and scholarship in the Horn of Africa, as well as a pioneer in the promotion of understanding between the various cultures and communities in the region.

Admission

Amoud University is a community-owned, non-governmental national university that is open to all aspiring candidates who meet the admission requirements regardless of sex, ethnicity, creed, color or religion.

Admission to the university is based on competitive examination. Candidates who have obtained an adequate passing grade in their secondary school exit tests are eligible for the admission examination that is held each July. Candidates from abroad who have matriculated under different educational systems are evaluated by the Admissions Committee on a case-by-case basis.

Academic year

The university operates according to a semester system, and the academic year begins in September and ends in July. There is a brief one-month break after the first semester, and two months of holiday at the end of the academic year.

Undergraduates and staff

As of 2012, Amoud University has a student population of 4,000, and includes pupils from all Somali-speaking territories. The college's teaching staff stands at 238 instructors.
