Narangba is a suburb of Moreton Bay Region, Queensland, Australia. It is located 34 km north of Brisbane.

This suburb has rural origins, but is being redeveloped as a residential suburb on the outskirts of the greater Brisbane metropolitan area.

History

The name Narangba possibly originated from an Aboriginal word meaning "small ridge", and that describes the area where the railway station with its associated township was situated. Earlier, it was part of an area referred to as Stoney Creek. The railway station was first called Sideling Creek Station, later renamed as Narangba. The suburb lies within the Burpengary Creek catchment area.

An award-winning Development Control Plan has resulted in major residential interest regarding the areas of Narangba and Burpengary, with infrastructure matching population growth. An industrial estate providing services required by manufacturing and general industries has taken full advantage of the shire's transport corridors, with sites on either side of the Bruce Highway.

Demographics

In the 2011 Census the population of Narangba was 16,223, 50.5% of whom are females and 49.5% of whom are males. The median/average age of the Narangba population was 31 years of age, 6 years below the Australian average. 78.8% of people living in Narangba were born in Australia. The other top responses for country of birth were England 6.2%, New Zealand 5.2%, South Africa 0.8%, Scotland 0.6%, Philippines 0.4%. 93.4% of people speak English as their first language 0.3% Afrikaans, 0.3% German, 0.2% Dutch, 0.2% Hindi, 0.2% Spanish.

Climate

The climate in Narangba is a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfa). The weather records generated for this suburb usually come from the Redcliffe weather station, meaning temperatures and annual rainfall can sometimes be inaccurate. Annual rainfall is between 900 and 1,400 mm, depending on the systems that form during the spring and summer months, such as an Australian east coast low, which can bring very heavy rainfall in the space of several hours. Notable events caused by these systems include the aftermaths of Cyclone Oswald in January 2013, and Cyclone Marcia in February 2015.

Temperatures can vary from warm to very hot in the spring and summer months, and mild to cold in the autumn and winter months. Again due to inaccurate information, record temperatures for this suburb are unknown. However, in November 2014, there was a heat wave which saw maximum ambient temperatures reach as high as 41°C.

Winds are known to tend south to southeasterly along the south east coast of Queensland, usually bringing moisture off the coast, causing showers. These can occur at any time of the year, and are also known to help create summer precipitation by colliding with warm, humid air which comes from the outback, generating afternoon and evening thunderstorms. These can be can be frequent in Narangba between late-September and early-May. The strongest ones can contain large hail, damaging winds and very heavy rainfall.

The local newspapers are Our Narangba Magazine, the Caboolture Shire Herald and the Caboolture News. Other regional and national newspapers such as The Courier-Mail and The Australian are also available.

Shopping and dining

A basic community shopping village is located on Main Street within the original retail precinct of Narangba opposite the train station as depicted on the thumbnail image of this page although for more select items the recently completed master planned estate of a Forrest Ridge boasts a modern shopping precinct at the intersection of Young Road and Golden Wattle drive, this complex consists of a Woolworth's, bakery, two 24hr gyms, fast food outlets and the ever family friendly Narangba Tavern.

With the development of the neighbouring master planned estate of Narangba Heights there is growing speculation of an IGA or equilivant to be built at the intersection of Oakey Flat Road and Sovereign Drive although this development is yet to be formally announced.
