Personnel Groupings are groups of players used in American Football to distinguish the different types of skill players that are out there on the field of play for the offensive side of the ball. Teams use personnel groupings in order to set a base for most of their plays, as well as being able to send out players in a timely fashion during a game. Usually Personnel Groupings are distinguished using a numerical system to set apart the Running back, Wide receivers, Fullbacks, and Tight ends. [1]
Formations
The groupings used in different formations is different depending on what the coach and the offense want to do, but generally there are different types of personnel that are used for run and pass plays. Although, it is common to pass out of a run personnel grouping and a passing personnel group. Mo
Numerical Naming
So when naming a personnel grouping you use a number system that refers to the amount of Running Backs and Tight Ends that are out there[2]. So if there is 1 Running Back and 2 Tight Ends it would be called a 12 personnel. Furthermore, if there is 2 Running Backs and 1 Tight End it would be referred to a 21 personnel [3]. You then are able to determine how much receivers are allowed out there, based off of how much players are allowed on the field of play for the offensive side of the ball. Defense's are also able to match substitutions that will allow them to match up more favorably against whatever personnel group that is sent out there by the offense.
