Brett Giehl[4][5] (born March 4, 1986)[6][7] is an American professional wrestler, currently signed to Ring of Honor as Dalton Castle.[2]
Castle also wrestles for Chikara under the name Ashley Remington.[1] Prior to adopting the Remington alias, Chikara revealed his full name as Dalton Caroline Castle[3]
Early life
As a child, he loved "Macho Man" Randy Savage,[8] (who also rivals Angela Lansbury as his dream opponent[9]) Besides Savage, other favorites include Curt Hennig, Davey Boy, Frank Gotch and Louden Swain (the latter a fictional character in Vision Quest portrayed by Matthew Modine).[10]
He wrestled over 10 years from middle school to college.[8] Beginning 2003 he was representing the Greece Athena High School Trojans.[11] and in 2004 he won a varsity wrestling tournament in the 171 pound weight class.[12]
He he got a degree in communications and theatre from a college.[8] He was an amateur and NCAA wrestler. He won a New York (state) championship in Greco-Roman wrestling and competed three times on the NCAA All-State Team. He was a member of Team USA where he traveled internationally for the World Championships.[2]
Even while engaging in pro wrestling events, he continued to compete at an amateur level. In 2010 he attained a second championship at the Beach National, winning 1st place in the 215lb division representing Livonia WC.[13]
Professional wrestling career
Early career (2009-2015)
During 2009 in Next Era Wrestling (held in The Auditorium Center in Rochester, New York) after defeating Brett Mednik (April 18[14]) and Brandon Thurston (June 20[15]) he unsuccessfully challenged Josh Jordan (the Northeastern Champion) on July 18. They would later team together. August 2, 2009 he defeated Marc Krieger at a Empire State Wrestling (ESW) event, preceding an August 15 loss to Bobby Fish. Castle spent one year with ESW until he left the promotion. May and June 2010 he had 2 title matches against Krieger for the Northeastern Championship, losing the first and winning the second by DQ.[16] On 2011, Castle returned to ESW, where he and his partner won the ESW Tag Team Championship by defeating The Rochester Wrecking Crew (Hellcat & Rob Sweet) at ESW WrestleBash. They held it 238 days until June 1, 2013 when it was dropped to The Flatliners (Asylum & Matt Burns) at ESW Aftershock. The team broke up afterward.
In November 2011[17] Castle worked with International Wrestling Cartel (IWC), where he won the IWC Heavyweight Championship on December 14, 2013. He lost the title on January 24, 2015 to RJ City in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. Dalton is the second longest reigning IWC World Heavyweight Champion, having held the title 406 days.[18] On May 9, 2015, Castle faced Tommy Dreamer for the title, but was defeated.
Chikara (2013-present)
At Wrestling Is Intense's final event, September 15, 2013, Darkness Crabtree's match with Jervis Cottonbelly went to a no-contest after the reformed GEKIDO attacked and tore down the show. Gekido ultimately "killed off" Crabtree.[19] In a series of videos posted to Chikara's YouTube channel titled "Rough Waters",[20] Dalton Caroline[3] Castle discovered that Lester Crabtree, his kayfabe uncle, had died and that he inherited a lot of money as a result. This led to him changing his image to Ashley Remington, a wealthy yachtsman.
His debut match in Chikara was 25 May 2014 at You Only Live Twice, where he faced Chuck Taylor.[21]
In 2015, he joined the "Battle Hive" with Amasis, Fire Ant and Worker Ant.
Ring of Honor (2013-present)
Castle debuted in Ring of Honor in May 2013, at Dragon's Reign.[2] He entered the 2015 ROH Top Prospect Tournament as Dalton Castle.[22] The tournament's February winner Donovan Dijak opted to give up his shot at the ROH World Television Championship against Jay Lethal to instead join the House of Truth. This prompted Dalton to come out in March and challenge Lethal for the TV title himself. Lethal accepted and defeated him with help from Dijak and J. Diesel, ending Dalton's first championship match in the company.[23]
In mid-May, Castle defeated Donovan Dijak in Global Wars '15, then lost to Jushin Liger in a following match which he later described as his favorite,[24] in spite of being angered by Liger's theft of his boys.[25] Regaining momentum with victories over Romantic Touch[26] and Takaaki Watanabe[27] in June, he beat Silas Young at Best in the World 2015. After a July loss to Adam Cole at Death Before Dishonor XIII, the feud with Silas resumed, with Silas (having gained a victory at DBD over Will Ferrara) wanting to take Dalton's boys, and make them "real men" by teaching them how to chop wood and fix cars. While Dalton agreed to this if he lost, it was only on the condition that Silas risk becoming Dalton's boy if he loses at All Star Extravaganza VII. Castle subsequently lost the match and lost his boys to Silas. He has hinted that The Briscoe Brothers may replace his previous boys.[28]
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2015)
In 2015 he competed two nights for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on their television show Impact Wrestling. On February 15 (aired May 6) at X-Travaganza 3 he was defeated by Rockstar Spudd in a singles match to qualify for the Ultimate X match later that night. On February 16 at the One Night Only version of Gut Check, he defeated DJ Z to qualify for the final match later that night. The following 5-way elimination match was won by Tevita Fifita.
Gimmick and reception
Castle's gimmick is that of a flamboyant showman, with somewhat of an androgynous personality. It has drawn comparisons to Gorgeous George[8][29] and Adrian Street;[29] unlike those two, Castle typically plays a fan favorite. It has also drawn comparisons to Ric Flair.[8][29] He has also mentioned glam rock stars David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Darkness and Foxy Shazam as inspirations.[8]
He has mentioned bathing in rose water and punch dancing to stay beautiful,[30] and doing handstands while showering to clean himself.[31] Eccentricities include preferring a low five to a handshake or hug.[32]
Castle's gimmick has received critical praise from fans and veterans of the wrestling industry.[29][33] A 2015 Ring of Honor show reportedly had Castle's T-shirt as the most popular one sold despite Castle not being scheduled to appear at the event.[33]
When asked about films starring Patrick Swayze whose protagonists' surnames compose his ring name and whether he preferred Roadhouse (Swayze played James Dalton) or Dirty Dancing (Swayze played Johnny Castle), he compared it to inquiring about his tastes in ice cream.[34] He had been defeated a year prior to this by Ice Cream Jr at CHIKARA Moonraker.[35]
Dalton has mentioned the importance of yoga[36] and a strong core for his boys,[37] whom he uses as human furniture. He threatened to use Silas Young as an ottoman if he became one of Dalton's boys. He also lamented that being accompanied by girls on his TNA run was like wearing blue jeans to a black tie event.[38] He has expressed an interest in visiting Belize with his boys,[39] and listening to "Hold On" to cope with their loss.
Radio
Music host
In 2011 [4] he was an emcee for WZNE (aka 94.1 The Zone) in Rochester, New York as The Giehl[40] and he interviewed Kurt Angle.[41]
From 2011 to 2014 he worked for WQBK-FM (aka Q103 Albany), where he hosted a 5-hour afternoon slot on the radio.[6]
He has singled out works like Hold On by Wilson Phillips[8] and track 5 "Unstoppable" of Foxy Shazam (album)[42]
Wrestling interviewer
Beginning January 2012, the company's YouTube channel hosted a series titled "the SISTERHOOD of the TRAVELING TIGHTS", abbreviated as "The Traveling Tights",[43] where he interviews professional wrestlers. His guests have included Luke Harper,[44] Velvet Sky,[45] CM Punk,[46] Matt Hardy,[47] and Dean Ambrose.[48]
