The North Polk Community School District includes the towns of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, and Sheldahl, as well as the surrounding rural area in the U.S. state of Iowa. Alleman is located approximately halfway (five miles north of Ankeny) between Des Moines, the capital of Iowa, and Ames, home of Iowa State University.
The district has two elementary buildings, occupied in April 1982. Central Elementary, which serves approximately 340 students in grades K-5, is located in Alleman. West Elementary, serving approximately 460 students in grades OK (Optional Kindergarten) through 4th. The Middle School building in Alleman serves approximately 350 students in grades 6-8. The High School building server approximately 400 students grades 9-12.
The Middle School building consists of 3 additions which were built in 1962, 1974, and 1995.
In 2010, a bond was passed to build a new high school which opened in 2013. The previous Junior/Senior High building became the Middle School, serving grades 6 through 8.
North Polk was one of the first high schools in Iowa, as well as the nation, to have a website run by students. North Polk has been a center for technology, and has offered a jump start for its students. North Polk is one of the only schools in Iowa offering a complete college preparatory and Advanced Placement Computer Science curriculum. Students can take classes teaching FORTRAN, JAVA, C++, and Oracle PL-SQL.
North Polk has a successful baseball program. The current head coach is Dave Middleton. The team fought their way to the state championship game three years in a row placing second in 2012 and 2013, winning the first place trophy in 2014 after a shutout thrown by senior Cole Jackson against Dyersville Beckman. In addition to the shutout, Cole Jackson tossed a no-hitter in the first round of the tournament against Roland Story.
